Title: Another musing...........
Post by: Sootchucker on 04 June 2015, 08:10
OK bear with me on this one - this is another one of my musings.......

I love the look of the 18" Negaro alloys on the GTD (one of the nicest standard fit wheels in my opinion), the shape that is, but I've never been a huge fan of the diamond cut (i have a few chips already and have had to touch them in with lacquer to keep the dreaded white worm at bay), and secondly the black inner painted faces, which no matter how careful I am at cleaning my wheels with a dedicated lambswool mit and blowing them dry, show the scratches like an absolute ba5tard !

I was wondering therefore of what a Negaro would look like stripped back and powder coated in high gloss silver (a similar finish to the Silver on the Pretoria alloys on the R). Is anyone a billy whiz at Photoshop and can simulate the effect for me ?

What do you all think - or is this sacrilege thinking

Personally I think our nogaros are the best looking wheel on a mk 7 but it would be interesting to see them in different colours to see if the effect is different looks wise.

They are one of the better VW wheels, but hard to envisage what they might look like fully powder coated.  :undecided:

Seabrook132 (Dan) in the mk6 section is a whizz with photoshop.  Maybe if you drop him a PM and ask nicely he'll knock something out for you

I agree with you Soot. I just posted something similar the other day saying the wheels while looking cosmetically great and really complimenting the Golf are probably the worst wheels out.
Even on the spokes between the diamond cut and black part, the join is terrible. Its all serrated. And just looking at the black part seems to scratch it.
I wonder if its the same on the Austins as they have a lot of piano black on its surface.

I'm not sure they would look so gd powder coated. I think the diamond cut/black finish is one of the reasons they look so gd.

Funnily enough I'm looking to swap the Austins on my Gti for a set of Nogaros!

I have said this to the dealership many times when they have to replace them for the dreaded white worm.
I wondered about a black insert and a darker silver insert. As said I like the look but they suffer from scratching and white worm so easily.

I wondered about a smoked chrome, still a dark effect.  I guess it would depend on car colour.

I think most of us would agree that the of all the standard wheels on the GTI/D/R the Nogaros are the best looking and their predecessors on the mk6 GTD and MK5 GT TDI/Sport were also a handsome wheel (Charlestons).

The thing is with these type wheels is that the diamond cut is designed in to show off the wheel highlights and once you go for a plain finish the detail gets lost and the wheel ends up looking a bit 'heavy' (for want of a better word).
Fairly plain wheels always look better in one colour but ones with nice details like the Nogaro and Cadiz need the contrast to look their best.

To give an example lets have a look at the MAM RS2 wheel which is not so loosely based on an Audi R8 alloy style.
It's not a million miles away from the design of a Nogaro and there are lots of pics on google that show it in different styles.
When it's in a polished front with black insides it looks pretty slick, simple, elegant and uncluttered. When it's in one colour it looks a bit "awkward" and heavy.
I can't get the images to go across using the phone so i'll just link to the manufacturer website where you can see the pics but Google searches show them on cars.
http://www.mamfelgen.eu click on RS2, it'll give a vague idea of what Nogaros would look like in different finishes.

Anyway, for info, the Austins are just as bad for the marking on the black paint.
I recently put my Austins back on the car after nearly a year and a half. They had literally been on the car a couple weeks before I took them off from new and there are still chalk marks on the tyres - but even so the black is marked. I clearly remembering thinking "WTF" when I cleaned them when they came off the car with literally a couple hundred miles on them.

As an aside, after running two different styles of 8x19 wheel over the last year and a half and for a few years before that on my Mk6's I can say that the 18's are a lot more comfortable. It has surprised me the difference. They run at lower pressures which helps but boy does it make an improvement. The only downside is that there is an initial bit of 'roll' when turning quickly where with the 35 profiles on the 19's there was just very quick turn in with no flex.
