Just had something pop up from Microsoft, they're offering me Windows 10 as an upgrade from 7 for free...
Anyone else had this?
-
I signed up for updates but not heard anything yet
But yes all Windows 7 users and after will be offered a free upgrade to 10; providing your computer can handle it......
-
System requirements
Basically, if your PC can run Windows 8.1, you're good to go. If you're not sure, don't worry – Windows will check your system to make sure it can install the preview.
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Free hard disk space: 16 GB
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
A Microsoft account and Internet access
I tick all those boxes, I just hope it gets rid of the old Windows 7 install as I have it all running on a SSD and space is at a premium lol
-
OEM Drivers will be the issue.
-
I just installed an SSD into my laptop and had trouble getting some drivers for Windows 7.......luckily I could use Linzi's laptop to find and download them
Looks like it will be more fun and games
And Wes, just get a bigger SSD
-
The problem I have with Windows is all the legacy poop that it is burdened with.
That and the fact that you have all kinds of ill conceived and mismatched UI.
and yeah, the drivers..........
Owning a Windows box is a drain on my time I can well do without.
And if anyone mentions switching to Linux.... I tried that, I nearly disappeared up my own ar3sehole.

By the way this is due to a Windows Update that you or the PC downloaded or installed, if you don't want this nagware / adware, Google it and you will be able to find what to uninstall.

Yeah that is the eventual plan Rhys, just haven't got a spare £120 kicking about at the mo for a 512GB version...

Fair point. I just splashed £80 on a 256gig SSD. Wish I had done it sooner though!!! My laptop is 4 years old and its reduced loading times from minutes to seconds. It now boots to Windows in under 30 seconds when previously I could go and make a cup of tea.........
Whats it crammed with?? Have you got an external drive you could use for your media?? I got a WD MyBookLive hooked up to my router which stores all my media
-
Yeah the Windows 10 thing is legit, I'm not getting any pop up to download it yet though

It's available to pre-download already apparently, two of my friends have already downloaded it. I'm getting no advisement to do so though.
-
They will be on Technical Preview.
Installed it myself last night, now the laptop in question just hard resets at login screen, gotta love Windoze.
Now working after numerous reboots and some unfortunately necessary jiggery pokery.
No more impressed with Windows, let's put it that way.
-
I've got 40gb spare on the SSD which just has Windows on it, all my music etc is on separate drives. Just had a spring clean and dumped all the old update installation files and gained myself 12gb back too...
-
I would say its better to register your interest for it, let the PC download it but don't install it yet (on release date) as it will be full of bugs.

That's what I am going to do

So much for all that supposed hardening M$ did to the code base a few years back..
"Most secure Windows, ever!" etc.
Pwned.

Devilz - good advice, I will be doing just that :afro:

Alright, windows 10 is out and available to download/install. How many of you have upgraded to it and what are your thoughts?
I just downloaded iso file from microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10) to do clean install but not going to install it as yet.
-
Hi,
I did mine few days ago. Everything appears to run OK, but startup and user switching seem really slow compared to 7. I've got the OS on a USB so when I can face all the software installs I'll do the clean install.
There where some patches released/installed last night but I've not checked them out yet
It looks clean and modern I guess, there were some useful apps and things like resource monitoring offer more detailed information.
Just make sure you backup your PC as an image if you can so there's a fast way back if you aren't happy.
Only thing I still need to check in detail is the second graphics card. I noticed quite a few folk complaining about them not working at their best/not auto switching etc.
Laptop if you are wondering is an Aliens are that's couple of years old.
I'll do some more testing at the weekend.
Cheers, Neil.

Installed it the other day onto my nearly 4 year old Toshiba laptop
Only issue I had was it knocked my screen resolution out but after downloading some updates and a reboot fixed that problem
Its pretty zippy but its just Windows; nothing amazing about it I guess :undecided:
Apps need work as I tried the Facebook app and half my news feed was missing.......so I uninstalled it
-
Messed up my sli config, Nvidea drivers and screen resolution.
Could not get both 780's working without flutter at high frame rates (which I know is an SLI problem) but was absolutely fine before the instal....
Also was using more ram at idle than 8.1/classic shell was using, but I am sure I can dial this out.
Going to have another go this weekend to get it all working as I want before I revert to 8.1 or even further back to 7prof.
At least its not like 8 when it came out....
-
i did upgrade on my laptop and now i'm stuck with windows which can't be activated. Going to call Microsoft and see what they say. At the moment, its calling my legit windows 8 key counterfeit
to use all the windows 10 features, I must activate windows.
-
got it all working in the end after about 4 hours
Now using opera and have all live feeds firmly removed or turned off where not.
-
Windows 10 out, Linux Mint in.

For thoses of you running windows 10 you may or may not know about windows 10 privacy issues.
from techrepublic
One of the biggest worries, though, is Microsoft's policy on disclosing or sharing your personal information. The following is an excerpt from the privacy policy:
"We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services."

Bit the bullet and went for it the other day, got to say I'm quite happy with it so far...
Only problem I had was the built in mail client trying to send emails from my old email address but a quick search on google found the solution, a registry entry change and restart and all was good :afro:
Using this monitor as a 2nd screen for the Xbox One has been a treat too
-
I realise I'm late to this conversation, but just felt like adding that I did the upgrade and I'm satisfied. I'm not blown away by it, because I don't see extreme changes, but it's functional and looks good. I'm sure there are features that I haven't discovered yet, but it wasn't a massive change like Windows 7 to Windows 8 was.
