Hi Guys and Gals,
I went out on a date on friday night with my Golf R. It went well until I dropped her off at her house when I kerbed the pavement-don't think she knew. It was dark and it was really lashing down. I tried to park it as close to the pavement to avoid her feet getting wet by the puddles but end up damaging my own car. Didn't examine the damage in front of her until the next day when I went back home, I was gutted when I noticed the nearside front wheel been badly lipped and scratched on one spoke. The tyre looks ok though. I believe diamond cut wheel (Mine-18s pretoria) need a specialist repair, I wonder whether anyone can recommend me a company near the Liverpool area? Am I better off buying a new one if it is too expensive to repair and the end result do not match with the other three wheels? Many Thanks for your reply!

Sorry to hear about the damage though - what tyres do you have? I always found my Bridgestones to have a generous lip, the tyres have touched the kerb more than once but thankfully only the tyres.
18" Pretoria? I think you're a little confused there, the Prets are painted and only come in 19". 18" wheel choices are Nogaro = GTD, Austins = GTI, Cadiz = R (although some markets get 19" Cadiz).
You should get a repair for under £100 if it is a light scrape rather than a deep gash.

I think it might be the cadiz. It is a standard Golf R wheel. The lip of the wheel looks bad but in normal alloys, I think it is bread and butter stuff for a mobile repairer. I had read about diamond cut wheels cannot be repaired in the past, so I want to guage a few opinions before I commit more cash.
I am glad she haven't change her mobile. In fact she hope I will take her out again. Hopefully, she will pay for the meal this time round! :laugh:
PS: The ladies seems to like the Golf R a lot esp. when the race button was pressed!

If they're diamond cut Cadiz then they can be refurbed but how many times depends on the damage, as it's a specialist lathe cutting job - about £80-£90. A refurb company will want to see the actual damage or at least a pic to advise. If powder coated Pretorias then should be cheaper.

As Asker says, Lepsons are pretty much the best and I've used them myself in the past.
Pristine will probably have an agent near you which will be about £70+VAT for an 18" wheel and they generally offer a loan wheel for you to run about on while yours gets fixed. Or at least they used to.
Diamond cut alloys are a bit 'specialist' and you'd not want a mobile repair unless it was just a tiny chip that needed flatting back and lacquering.

Lepsons - conveniently just up the road from me. My mate had his one of his Nogaros refurbed there last year and it was a quality job. They do free courier/carriage too.

Then on Friday I had my second accident, whilst I was faffing around with my keyless immobiliser. I caught my left foot between the car sill and the pavement and whilst pulling my foot out, ripped my ankle to shreds and am now immobilised just like my R.
It was so painful, that I called my Private Health Insurance and started a claim in case I needed to see a Foot and Ankle Orthopaedic Surgeon. The one I go to treats members of the Royal Ballet. The last time I saw him I buggered up both feet after a ballooning accident in Egypt. He sorted me out in 2 weeks. Thankfully, this time the damage is not too bad and I don't think I will need him, I hope.

Seriously, I'm sorry you are having such a painful time, but if you will insist on indulging in treacherous activities such as running, getting in and out of cars and messing about with aptly named immobilisers, what can you expect :shocked: :wink:
I hope your ankle heals well and quickly, that medical intervention may not be required and you will soon be back to your Egyptian ballooning best.
Reassuring and fortunate to have private health insurance, we have it too and it proved to be a god send during my partner's cancer treatment last year.

PHI is so important for Cancer Care. You get the latest drugs and the quickest treatment which is essential for treating cancer.
Sorry Herbie, but you should know better when kerb crawling. Hope you get your wheel fixed. You will always remember this lass for the damage to your pride and joy.

This is not the worst car incident with a new date. A few years ago, I was soft enough to lend my keys (a three month old cayman s ) to a girl on my third date. She managed to crash the car into a bus! I didn't sleep for weeks but still dated her for 2 years.

Herbie: It's time you settled don and stopped playing the field. The inner person is more important than those external looks. You will date yourself to death and still end up feeling lonely. It is the loneliness that people are really afraid off. There are so many people in such a situation. You sound like a very nice and generous chap who is too trusting.
You cannot get a mobile repairer to fix Diamond Cut Alloys. In fact, I would not use them even for painted alloys. The way they fix the wheel by the roadside buggers the balancing, unless the damage they are repairing is really tiny.
Always best to send your wheel and tyre to a proper place who will do a complete refurb when damage is extensive even for painted wheels. In fact, if a wheel has to be repaired correctly, then it matters not whether it is Painted or Diamond Cut. The whole wheel needs to be addressed, the tyres than fitted and the whole caboodle can then be balanced. That's the Lepsons' way.
Here's hoping your wheel gets fixed perfectly. Do keep us posted on how it transpires. Best of luck.

Thanks again for the reply. Rung Lepson up and have a good look at their website. I do have a lot of confidence with them. Cost around £120+vat inc. courier. I just need a good weekend to take the wheels off and get it boxed up for transport. However, I was thinking driving there and leave the car with them. Since the car had done 12000miles and the tread is now down to 45mm, is it worth changing the front conti 5s (summer tyres) to all seasons. In the past, I think the Kwik Fit boys always manage to scratch my Mk 6 GTI alloys,Ii just wonder whether these wheel refurbishment company are a bit more careful when it comes to changing one's tyres?
The cost keeps on climbing after one incident! :embarrassed:

If they are repairing your wheel, they would be really cheeky to hand it back with a mark from a tyre wrench left on it :rolleyes:
When I got 4 wheels powder coated a couple of years back, I took the opportunity to also supply them with 4 new tyres I'd purchased cheaply on-line. They need to take the tyres off to repair the wheels so its not as if its an extra job for them.
So yes to answer your question, they would be extremely careful refitting tyres. Probably the best place to have change them.

^^ Much, much rather Lepsons, or any decent wheel refurber, fit tyres than the likes of Kwikfit. Had the misfortune to experience their cack handed ineptitude when they marked one of my diamond cut Glendales :wink: Have now found a reputable tyre fitter and had last 2 two tyres fitted without issue.
