Title: TD1 Flag
Post by: remlapeel on 29 May 2015, 09:02
Hi Guys,

I thought I would start a debate about the TD1 flag following my disaster with my GTI warranty claims.

I had my GTI remapped with Revo and had multiple warranty claims

- Flywheel and Clutch were replaced under warranty, after diagnostic data was sent to VW and they suggested a replacement  - KEY POINT : Due to the clutch issue, I couldn't take it to a Revo dealer to have the map removed, so this went into VW with the map on, had multiple test drives and a diagnostic done and was returned to me with the map still in place.

- Inlet manifold - This activated a CEL ( which I had taken to both my local dealers) but before I returned it to VW I have the map returned to normal. Again all covered over warranty.

So, I'm interested to see what your experiences have been!

There is a big topic already on golf mk7 forum where some chaps from the US have had VW refusing warranty claims due to remap even though they have flashed back to stock before going to the dealer. Also it seems their dealers were able to see how many times their ECU was reflashed. They were remaped with APR tune.

Wouldn't say you had a disaster at all, in fact you did well out of it...mapped car went into dealership and repair was covered by the warranty.

I meant a general disaster with my GTI - I had a total of 17 warranty claims before VW excepted my rejection of the car. Got an R now so all a good!

I was fully prepared to pay for the clutch etc, I knew what I was doing with the map. Just interested if anyone has actually been flagged in the UK

I don't know if the TD1 flag is just scaremongering, because I had a huge 8k warranty claim when I broke a engine mount accelerating hard from standstill .The car needed a new DSG , catalytic converter, radiator plus other auxiliary belts etc.I didn't have a chance of removing the map as i was broken down by the side of the road & needed VW assist to pick me up. The car was then towed Direct to The dealer to be assessed. That's when I get a phone call to tell me of the magnitude of the damage & that VW assesses will have to be called in to check the car before any warranty work can be done,at the time I was pretty sure they would find the revo map & I would be left with the bill, but they didn't find it & I got the car back 3weeks later wither mapp still on.

"scaremongering"

I know what you are saying.....the existence of TD1 is totally confirmed.....as far as im aware most cases and proof is based in the US and on Audi cars I think. Ive not read of anyone running into problems in the UK on Audi or VW cars yet....But I could be wrong.

@gazmondo. How come your signature says deposit paid for r400??

I placed a £500 deposit a few weeks back when VW announced they were going to build it, although I'm Reaching a bit for this car, it will have to be under 40k for a 5door DSG, metallic paint & dcc & have a good GFV to keep my monthly low on pcp,if it doesn't work out my deposit is fully refundable so nothing ventured nothing gained.

If GFV ends up at around 60% (because of lack of lease deals and exclusive/low availability) we assume it is dot on £40k with your options, and you are unable to achieve more than 5% discount, you are looking at around £550pm on 36 month PCP terms.

Same as above, but 55% GFV, and you're talking around £610 a month. I doubt it will be as low as 50% (around where the standard R is right now). 55% is likely if numbers are not limited.

Wow as much as that, if that is the case I'll be sticking with the R which isn't a bad thing, I was hoping to put 5k down & have monthly at no more than £350.

OK so what do you reckon folks?  I'm due a service in about 3 weeks and currently sitting with stage 1 APR remap.  Bother to take it off or just let it roll through...?  Obviously this is not a warranty issue but what do they do on a service, there might be a software update?

Id remove it personally.
What's the APR like long term btw?

Tell NOT to perform software updates

You don't want them locking out the ECU  :lipsrsealed:

Really happy with it.

I tend to drive around in Normal mode most of the time but Sport when I fancy really giving it some.  Sport mode is ridiculous, not sure it's too healthy for the clutch but I'm about 22k on the clock now and can't complain whatsoever really. About to put some new tyres on the front, looking forward to having proper grip by replacing the Bridgestones!

Been in for my second service, first time with a Stage 1 APR on it.  Left it in Eco on purpose as I  knew they would be test driving (had a complaint about creaky suspension) and nothing was said about it being remapped.

Another 17000 miles or so until the next service

Hey y'all. Instead of me starting a new thread I thought I'd just jump on here with some FYI I've just learnt.

So as some of you may know, my handbrake has a mind of its own, with that said its been in a few times to try and fix it, including resetting the Ecu that controls the brakes and abs etc. it has also been in for two services. It also has a very evident hardware modifications. Anyway I got a call today from my dealer saying that vw had been back in touch after their initial turn it on and off attempt failed wanting to know if my car had been remapped. I explained that yes it had but nothing had been touched regarding the brake controller etc, and the salesman agreed with me but we also agreed that vw will hide behind this so I'm gonna go back to standard before I get it back in. What's relevant to this thread however is that even though my dealer had scanned the car at service, done updates and scanned for this handbrake (and the obvious physical modifications) my car has not been flagged as td1! Now I'm not saying that when it comes in to check they wouldn't be able to detect it in its current state, but what I am saying is day to day and even fault reading and updates don't flag the td1 thing up. So currently against all odds my car is standard in vws eyes.

Just thought I'd let you know.

Very interesting, do you have tuning box or Ecu remap on it.I still don't know of anyone that has been TD1 flagged, maybe it's just scare tactics.

Stage 2 shark map. Basically he admitted his scanning software wasn't sophisticated enough to pick up the flag automatically but said that vw used some that picked it up every time or so he'd been told.

There was a post on an Audi forum (might even be on this thread) but basically when involved in deep diagnosis (i.e. beyond basic fault finding etc) they connect to VW HQ and transmit the data back for processing, from what I remembered it takes a while for the file to be compare to what they expect so a TD1 isn't instant and isn't something that happens from usual interaction with the ECU.   Something has to be badly wrong for them to want VW to get their technical bods to investigate and the data upload is the first step.

I've shoved this link up on here several times: http://www.vwroc.com/forums/topic/8351-bulletin-posted-to-audi-dealers-this-morning/

When you consider how many VW's, Audis, SEATs, Skodas and other VAG group vehicles including commercials get plugged into VW's service computers every day all over the world (and the interrogation would have to be quite thorough down through the internet, direct to Wolfsburg) then I'd assume, as Monsta says, it'd have to be something pretty bad for them to dig that deep into the ECU. Unless there is some Wolfsburg wonder computer that can diagnose millions of ECU's in a short space of time? I'd be amazed if this was the case knowing how crap the VW UK website is...

Edited out the autocorrect cock ups

No Bluefin leaves behind a flash count same as any other OBD uploaded flash,  looks like I can read the obd flash count with vcds but can't reset it

I'd definitely say scare mongering. Had my car in for a service, I had flashed it back to stock but picked the car back up with no mention at all of the map.
