Title: Headlight washers
Post by: Kirky76 on 27 May 2015, 19:19
I have read a few threads about headlight washers and was wondering if all the edition 35's have them, mine has the cut outs in the bumper, but there not working, I have tried sitting on the drive with headlight on, manually and in auto, pulling the screenwash stalk back 5 to 10 times and nothing happerns.
Is there a common fault with this system that you folks may know about.

All Ed35's have them as they are a legal requirement with xenons.

Not everybody likes screenwash all over their bonnet, so the fuse may have been pulled, or they could have been disabled with VCDS.

Save yourself a whole load of bonnet mess and leave them disabled.

Formerly known as Vagcom, it's a software program and cable that allows you to connect to VAG cars and carry out diagnostic checks, scan for errors/faults etc.  It also allows you to enable and disable various features on the car.

Have a look in this thread for some examples of what you can do with it

Are they? as far as i'm aware i don't need them if i retrofitted xenons!

Without this turning into yet another thread about the legalities of retro fitted xenons, cars with factory fitted xenons must have washers and auto leveling. There is much uncertainty regarding retro fitted lights as very few are tested for anything more than beam pattern at MOT time.

Mine were checked on the last MOT although the self levelling system wasn't checked, mine are retrofitted, maybe he thought they were standard fit.

Not needed, only if they are fitted.http://hazzydayz.com/mot-guide-issued-01-january-2012-section-17-headlamps-2847-p.asp

Weren't these fitted to "ordinary" GTis? I have the cut outs. I don't want to go looking for fuses unless I can establish that they should be working. The manual isn't very helpful as it applies to so many models.

You will only have headlamp washers if you either have factory fitted bi-xenons, (an optional extra on normal Mk6 GTIs but standard on ED35s) OR if you have the optional Winter Pack (with normal halogen headlights).  If you have neither of those then you won't have the headlamp washers but you will still have the cutouts which are on all regardless.

Would heated leather interior mean you get the winter pack by default and so have headlight washers?

Without Xenons - no, even with leather you would still have to have separately specced winter pack to get headlight washers.  Leather gives you the heated seats (which were standard with leather) but that's not the same as having the Winter Pack.  Winter Pack with leather was as follows:

1. Winter pack in conjunction with leather = Headlight washers, heated windscreen washer jets and low washer fluid warning light.

2. Winter pack in conjunction with leather & xenon's = Heated windscreen washer jets ONLY (as headlight washers and low fluid warning are standard with the xenons).

Winter Pack with cloth = Headlight washers, Heated seats, heated washer jets, low washer fluid warning

No, the winter pack was a separate option, which, depending on the spec of the car, would include all or some of the following;

- heated seats
- headlamp washers
- heated washer jets
- low washer fluid warning display on the dash

I think it might also have included a larger washer fluid reservoir

What you actually got in the winter pack depended on whether you ordered leather and/or xenons. If you had both of these options, all you got with the winter pack was the heated windscreen washer jets, as heated seats were part of the leather option, and headlamp washers, low washer fluid warning display and larger washer fluid reservoir were part of the xenon option. Confusing!!

I have headlamp washers on my car, as I have xenons. IMHO, they don't really do a very good job of keeping the headlights clean, but they do a fantastic job of making a real mess of spraying washer fluid all over the bonnet!

All GTIs got the cutouts. You wont be the first person to ask this question.
Xenons or winterpack were the only times they were fitted
