Of course you can get replacements... they are not paired with the car but there are different versions of the ABS unit - so get the correct one.

Correct! I had to change mine, Didn't think it would be any problem until i was told by VW it has to be the exact numbers. I had to take one from a SEAT :D

getting error code saying pump is knackered?
after a bit of homework its more likely to be ecu as i dont trust the error codes sometimes.

so i just need to take note of serial number and find one the same then???

What are the error codes?

You need a matching part number (usually 9 characters/numbers), you'd have trouble finding matching serial number :)

Yes the ABS does different things on certain models, 16v and VR6 have a very basic form of traction control.
Be aware that the ECU is the part you need to match and has its own part number on the underside, not just the obvious number on the pump.
If you have a rear sensor fault that you can not fix despite replacing the sensor, sadly it is likely to be the ECU that is faulty. The problem is the solder goes dry on the terminals connecting the wheel sensor to the PCB of the ECU.
It is possible to open the case up and resolved the terminals, but you pretty much destroy the case getting into it & sealing the case back up is difficult.
A mate sent his ECU fixed by BA Raman, he is very happy with the result and it comes with warranty.
If you do replace your pump, ideally you need to bleed the brakes using vagcom to remove air fully.

read a little bit about that
howcan vagcom purge air from system didnt know there was a automatic bleed/air vent?

vagcom activates the ABS pump, pushing the air bubbles down the brake pipe, then you bleed the brake as normal taking the air out at the bleed nipple.

100% good advice

I'm breaking a 16v Gti...so the abs ecu is going spare, find out the serials and I'll see it matches

Should be able to,

Just look underneath the ECU and pump, a camera phone is invaluable here.  Should start 3A0 907 XXX X.

And if you ever remove the ECU from the pump, use the correct E5 socket to avoid chewing the bolt heads.
