Title: changing discs and pads
Post by: clancy on 02 May 2015, 09:08
After a little advice, firstly is there a way to tell without going out and measuring if I have 280 or 288mm discs ? Wanted to order them today but can't get to the car today

Also,  was reading its wise/necessary  to replace the rear bearings at the same time ? What bearings are these as I will order them at the same time

And is there any abs related things that need doing at the same time ?

Thank

I take it your have a GTI/VR6?

N reg cars are the cross over year for the brakes if before then 280mm if after then 288mm.

Yes if your doing the rears too then replace the bearing as their in the disc. The ABS ring is just pushed onto the back of the disc so just swap it over.

I would double check just incase the previous owner upgraded to 288mm.

Ahem.... the wheel bearing are not in the discs on the 280 or 288mm discs, only on the back ones.

On the front I would not bother to change them unless they are noisy or have play.

Didn't read that carefully, only got up a little while ago

There is only one set of wheels bearings for the rear (same for drums and discs). I have gone for Febi.
Ask our forum sponsor what deal he can do you.

On the fronts the GTI changed from Lucas 280mm to ATE 288mm on chassis 1H-S-560001 (VR6 changed from Lucas 280mm to ATE 288mm 1H-S-400001).

Rears are all the same 226mm discs and as said you would need new bearings pressing in (I can arrange to do that for you if needed?)
And with the abs rings you can usually reuse the old rings, although I have known a few to split on removal but I also keep them in stock.

If you have these front calipers you have 280mm discs on front :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BRAKE-CALIPER-FRONT-LEFT-VW-GOLF-MK-3-III-2-0-GTI-2-8VR6-1991-96-/371158080898?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&fits=Model%3AGolf|Plat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item566abedd82

If you have these :- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mk3-golf-gti-16v-vr6-mk2-upgrade-g60-front-calipers-ate-vgc-288-283-/181729658639?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2a4fee870f

You have 288mm.

Its the shape of the hole on top that tells them apart.280's have an oblong slot,288's have a diamond shape.
