Hugely eventful, this last week. Last Thurs I had 2nd job interview (facing redundancy in June due to my place of work closing), went to Mexico on hols the next day, woke up to a job offer yesterday morning and this morning woke up to an email notification from VW that my long awaited R has left the factory. After coming back from Mexico on Saturday morning, i'm in Berlin on Monday....If only I could drive it back to blighty next Thursday.
Good things come in 3s apparently, just wondering what the 3rd bit of good news will be?
-
With a week like that perhaps it's... Pirelli's? :D
Congrats on the job!
-
Congrats about the job. :) and the R!
-
Congrats on the job.
Congrats on the new 4wd arrival
And you did remember your contraception after all that tequila? Will there be another congratulations on their way...?
-
Hope you had a good holiday.
Congrats on the job offer, the impending arrival of the R and whatever may become the third good thing. With Mr Ex's comment in mind, I've holidayed in Mexico quite a few times and know how keen the bar staff are refilling the Tequila shots
-
Congrats MH!!
-
Congratulations Matt on two counts. Could not happen to a nicer person.
Been to Mexico a few times but mainly to Mexico City as I have the use of a swish apartment there. Always had a great time, drank in moderation but gorged myself on food.
Now the third thing will be that your car will come with Bouncy Bridgestones which you will love profusely. Actually, don't expect a third thing where good news is concerned as it could be considered greedy. Three things only works for bad news/things.
Congratulations once again.
-
Thanks everyone, good result on the job front, and it pays significantly more than the current one. The "City of Sunderland" is due into Tyne from Emden on the 4th of May, if by some miracle my R is on that, it'll beat me home from Germany.
Almost certainly getting the missus a new Polo GTI (that's the extra in my new pay packet gone!) I'll no longer be able to give her a lift to work on the way to mine. Glutton for VW punishment?
-
Not a bad week at all then is it? Polo GTI does look nice, it'll be nice to borrow it from your missus on occasions too :p
-
Pleased that you have finally got some good news your way MH :-)

The plan is to share the 2 cars to keep the miles down on both as my commute will be doubling. That may not happen as one of my fellow gaffers lives a few miles from me, if he's up for a car share then it won't be a bother. Would still like the option of driving something nice rather than a 1.2 shopping trolley for the sake of £50 a month more. Nothing else out there seems to tick the boxes. A1 is spartan on equipment levels and a bit girly , mini Cooper a bit Fisher Price inside and a bit girly , Fiesta ST has a poor interior and not great on the residuals. Hope to see a Polo GTI in the flesh in Berlin's huge VAG showroom next week (and may even a Veyron).
Had another email. Yesterday it was on its way and 4 weeks away, today it is on its way and 3 weeks away (3 weeks mean it arrived at Emden and is waiting for a ship? It's been so long I forget the subtle differences within stage 5). Last full day in Mexico today, and it's going to rain.

Premium Mini is so much nicer than Polo and Fiesta. Audi is a contender possibly. You need to overcome this love for all things VAG. There is a whole world out there and it is not VAG.
-
And it's not premium mini either

Ooh that's a tough one, let me guess, Bavarian, 3 letters?

Mini isn't really a practical car is it compared to an Olop, the rear doors on the new 5 door are comedic, Olop is a great utilitarian car and more in keeping with the Mk2 Golf in size and spirit
They are made a mile from my house and knowing some of the muppets who screw them together i tend to give a wide birth
-
Premium Mini? Premium vs a Fiat 500 or Citroën C2 perhaps, but still very obviously built to a cost, it's no BMW 535D.
When I was in one a few weeks ago for a look, it didn't seem any more premium than a current Polo and noticeably less so than the A1. Not keen on the big and simplistic instrumentation. One tactile piece felt very cheap, the plastic door opener on the inside door card. It flexed so much in use I was convinced it wouldn't last 100 pulls. Always put the money into the tactile stuff - quality perception rule #1.
What I look for in a car is something that looks fine, can be fun to drive and be refined when you want it to be. Good performance and fuel economy (relative to output), Reasonably priced, access to good levels of discount, well specced and with good residuals. Nothing else in my radar fits all that other than the Polo GTI/GT Blue.
A1 is stingy on equipment levels, levels of discount are low, the dealers are generally tossers, and residuals are about the same as the Polo (GFV about 50% for both). Mini is quite low on equipment, residuals are lower than I'd expect, and it's a bit girly -I'd be wearing a balaclava to drive it. I can get £3700 off a Polo GTI if I take out finance then settle straight away to claim the deposit contribution. £20k RRP car (with a few options and DBP paint) becomes £16300, will be an easy £11500 after 3 years private sale. £133pm depreciation on a £20k car? Not even close on a Mini Cooper or upper end A1.
An extra £15pm will take care of the 3% interest you would've earnt leaving your £16300 in the bank. £148pm for a Polo GTI is looking the logical choice for me.
-
The mini I got from the Mill Car clinic was the worst car i'd ever driven and the thirstiest. I wouldn't touch one with barge pole let alone buy one.
-

I think the 5 door A1 is less girly which seems to be a big thing for you Matt.
I liken it to guys wearing pink, Only real men can get away with it

I must admit, the choice does seem more me picking a second car that I would like to drive than the wife picking her own. Luckily enough she likes VW's, especially the smaller ones. She used to have driving lessons in a Lupo GTI and loved that car. The Polo GTI will be a good fit for both of us. You seem to get a lot for your money on one right now. If the free insurance is still on when we need to get an order in, that'll be even more in its favour.
The alternative would be to have the R be our "sensible" car and buy something seriously impractical. It's a pity Daihatsu pulled out of Europe, those Copens look a lot of fun.
-
The free insurance on a new driver has got to be well worth it for that alone.
Make sure you tick park assist if it's an option (once can never believe the configurator! :roll eyes: ) to keep those expensive to fix alloys pristine.

Surprisingly the wife would only be £410 a year as a newly qualified driver and adding me as a 2nd driver with 12 years no claims and 3 points for speeding would add a tenner to her premium. Would definitely be getting the parking pack and DCC (worth it to improve ride when wanting it soft on non MQB platform for £245), pity ACC doesn't seem to be an option on the GTI. I will ask incase it is a price list or brochure error.

Firstly: You guessed wrongly
Secondly: You are being a very silly girl
Thirdly: You need a good spanking

It's not true, even 'real' men can't get away with wearing pink
Mini's are girly, which is fine if you're a girl but otherwise? Polo GTI every time, failing that A1.

Only one of those things is true.
There's no shame in your undying devotion to Bayerische Motoren Werke. I'm just not convinced you bought the right car.

Darling, you need to keep up. There is a whole world of other forums out there! I am totally in love. You need to tip toe to THE other forum for the revelation.
Otherwise, you'll be spanked!

Yes I read earlier (on the other forum) that you've finally had the Soundaktor turned off and are smitten......once again......for now
Long may it continue
Have you got the paddle ready?

Damn it Rebecca, as you were not immediately available, I indulged in some rather excessive self-flagellation and broke the ruddy paddle.

I'm still not convinced the BMW cord has been truly severed

Sometimes one cannot wait when one gets the urge. So sorry.
Cord has been severed good and proper, I promise.
Red Tornado is amazing and insanely fast.
Bought a new stronger paddle to spank myself to oblivion.
Funny how pleasure and pain can be so addictive.
Used a quarter tank spanking Red Tornado today.
I am nicely exhausted.

Only a 1/4 tank? That's just pussy footing around, you must try harder next time

Just back from Mexico, very jet-lagged.
Might pay my dealer a visit today seeing as the R is waiting at Emden for a lift to the UK (a whole 5 weeks before he thought it would be built) and there are 2 Tyne-bound ships coming in within the week. Want to arrange extended warranty before it is too late to do so (gives me the option of keeping it worry-free past 3 years or to make it a good private sale proposition at 3 years old).
Will also ask him about the likelihood of getting close enough to Drivethedeal's price on the Polo GTI for me to not rely on travelling for a broker price.
Need to get out and post my contract of employment offer that was waiting for me also, as i'll be in Berlin most of next week.

You are turning into a flying mattress.
-
How the other half live eh?
I've always wanted to do the Autostadt trip but never got round to it.
-
Should've phoned first before paying Durham a visit, my salesman is on holiday. I did get to see a 3 door Lapiz on Prets that is for sale as a cancelled order. Not doing too much to entice would-be buyers, it needed a damn good wash. Have made the extended warranty request via a sales colleague.
Shot through to Hartlepool afterwards to see a few relatives and the GTD was uncharacteristically going like a rocket.
Just compared specced A1 with specced Polo GTI - why is Polo metallic/pearl paint £540 when the A1 metallic/pearl paint is £340?
-
How much are they knocking the R out for - assuming it's pre-reg'd? I bet it's not for as good a deal as you got MH!

The salesman I talked to (as my regular one is on Holiday until Monday) about adding an extended warranty to my R (in case it ends up here and registered before Friday) said they want full price for the R or very close to it. They have supposedly had lots of offers, but not close enough.
I did pretty well out of my offer (moreso the p/x price - I would be looking at £700 less than I got for it if my salesman had realised when the R would actually turn up. I doubt i'll be troubling my salesman for the Polo GTI at broker prices, will probably be a resounding "sorry!" to get anywhere close. Pity the 2 year extension has gone up £55 with the latest price rise.

The paint on vw's is always more expensive than Audi, Skoda or seat. Have a look at the Skoda website and the paint price has actually been reduced!
