Overall its pretty much the same car. The main difference in the engine (TSI which has a IHI turbo) is has slightly better tuning potential, it can reach a much higher torque ouput.
The next main ting is the interior. The MK6 is a much nicer place inside and feels classier.
The handling, suspension and brakes are pretty much the same, MK6 a tiny bit stiffer.
Both great cars mate.

I'm guessing a Mk5 will have done more miles. Also they are beginning to look just that bit less 'current'. Well, they do to me, having had both.

MK6 feels a lot more modern and will stay more current over the next few years, whereas the Mk5 is now starting to show its age a little. Still both excellent cars though and you can't really go wrong with either!

I've had both and the Mk6 is worth the extra cash. Faster, more economical, lower tax and insurance and it looks better. No brainier imo.

With you on this. Have had both (2 mk5s and current mk6) and though both very good, I'd choose the mk6. More refined in terms of interior quality, which is a fair step up, but also refined power delivery (more linear). Still very fond of the mk5 but it is starting to look a little dated now whereas the mk6 will hold it's own looks wise against newer cars for some time to come.
I guess it depends how much you can stretch to financially without over burdening yourself. A decision only you can make.

Do you have to buy a car now? I'd have a Mk6, but if I didn't have enough money, I'd save for a bit longer.

I'm pretty sure I have seen this around Oxford as there are not too many.
I'd take a Mk5 GTI Pirelli over a Mk6 GTI given rarity, i'd be looking for a ED35 if i wanted a Mk6

Was in the same position not too long ago myself. Went for the MK6, a lot more modern and if you plan on keeping the car for some time lets say, you'd rather something that isn't so dated. Saying that though, you'd be spending north of 6k for a mk5 which seems pricey for the age.

i love th3 mk5 gti, but mk6 gti would be the one because it looks alot better!
