Hi, i've confirm that Seat Leon cupra has 265/280 Hp with the same base engine of Golf GTI 230Hp. Does anyone know what are the differences between this two engines? Could it be only the ECU programming ?
-
It's the same engine as the R. So will have bigger turbo, bigger intake, different valves and cylinder head I believe when compared to the GTI
-
I am pretty sure that the 280 in the Leon is the same motor as in the GTi. The R (and S3/TTS 300bhp+) has the version with different turbo and modified head.
-
I swear I read the 280 had a detuned R engine. Could be wrong though given the Stage 1 remap takes the GTI 230 to 320bhp
-
yep, the cupra turbo has the same reference has R ( 06K 145 722 A ). It seems like cupra is R without 4wd
-
The Cupra has the R engine for sure.
A friend of mine has one as a company car (and very nice it is too).
It is just a mildly detuned R engine with torque peaking at the same figure as a GTI but a bit higher in the rev range (due to turbo differences) to keep the front wheels from spinning relentlessly under hard acceleration.
It needs to be run on 98 RON fuel like the R (GTI happy enough on 95) and if you look at tuners graphs you can see it's the same engine once remapped.

Sorry I was going by Top Gear website, which states
"Seat's new performance hatch comes with either 261bhp, or 276bhp if you go for the 280 edition (280 stands for the amount of PS). Said power comes from the same two-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the Golf GTI, fettled to eke out more power"
-
In a way they're right, the R is also based on the GTI engine, just an extensively uprated version.
All three engines are from the same family.

Yes I suppose that's right, the "fettling" could include the head upgrades that the R has.
