Had a couple of hours with a Golf GTE yesterday. Really impressed. The silence takes a bit of getting used to! Pics and waffle to follow soon.
Also drove a Scirocco R, Polo GTI and Something Up!
-
What's the verdict on the Rocco R?
-
Thank you - look forward to more info/pics! :-)

Look forward to your review, you will see I have worked some tax figures in the other GTE thread.
-
Any pics and waffle yet?

Great write up John! I'd love to have a go in one.

many thanks for the write up John - just one question. Your exampel had Keyless entry - why did you have to take the key out of your pocket to unlock the door?
As for the muted colour availability - very good point. It just seems the look of the car (with its rather garish blue striping and forced 'blue tartan' interior') is difficult to adjust with the excessive restrictions placed on it. even the wheels don't really get me excited - and the five door only thing is just baffling.
I actually love the concept and the technology but I don't think I could live with the look of the car.
-
If you live or commute to a 'Low Emission' zone !? then it's an interesting option.

Cheers :)
Mark - good point. Probably part of switching between cars all day and still using the remote without thinking! Makes it even more seamless so I should probably change that
Definitely a car for Bozza

ha ha yes I wondered if it was to do with that.... not that there is anything wrong in using the keyfob....

The BIK is calculated on the manufacturer list price, so you can't take the 5k discount into a BIK calculation.
I did a quick HMRC BIK calculation on the base GTE (33k RRP) and a GT with 1.4TSI (24k RRP)
GTE
Company Car Tax (2015/2016) £330.20 (20%) £660.40 (40%)
GT 1.4 TSI
Company Car Tax (2015/2016) £840.40 (20%) £1,680.80 (40%)
Next you'd need to look at the lease price per month for each of those for a certain mileage, then chuck in some real world fuel use figures for that annual mileage.
I wouldn't mind betting that the actually annual cost doesn't actually come out radically different... unless you add into it charging the thing up from your electricity point, which of course adds an install cost (albeit one off) and the cost for charging it (which will only go up probably faster than derv/petrol).
Anyone fancy supplying the rest of the data?

Ok, so if we take the 1.4 GT, by using 70% of the combined MPG figure (which is based on my real world experience of my GTD vs the figures!) we would see 41mpg from that engine (manual gearbox)
Now the GTE has the same petrol engine, but also weighs more (batteries!), so I'd expect pure petrol power to have a lower real world MPG.
If you plug it in, you have an extra cost, as i said above.
If you charge it from the engine, your MPG will suffer, you will gain no overall economy (law of conservation of energy and all that) and indeed will actually loose some - unless its just charging from regenerative braking (which I think the car might use?)
So its really just down to lease payments (based on good old residuals apart from anything else), whether you drive in a congestion charging zone or if you can blag some free juice from your company...
