Right long story short been haveing boost problems lately as my other thread states now ive got white smoke on start up but when its up too temp it smokes blue and really smells bad, doesnt smoke constant but if i stop for a couple of minutes and then pull off loads of blue smoke comes out im thinking turbo seals or could it be something else?? any help would be great thanks also its a 1.8t aum
-
Sounds like a totally goosed turbo to me...
-
Cheers mate that is what i thought any idea how long roughly it will be drivable for until a new car is sourced?? and thanks for the reply
-
sounds like when my oil seals went in the turbo, if you remove one of the pipes after the turbo you'll probably get oil p*ssing out of it.
You can drive it like that but your only going to coat the exhaust in oil and block the cat, its about £200-£250 to get the turbo refurbished and it'll take you a full day/2 days of labour if you do it yourself and haven't done it before.
-
Thought so mate  stupid question but what pipe can i remove as im not clued up on turbo's as this being my first 1, also not worried about cat getting blocked up as i dont have 1  dont really want to spend that sort of money on it as it has 160,000 on the clock so will probs look for a less milage engine or another golf with less miles
-
I'd suggest one of the intercooler hoses as they at lowest point. Remove the front bumper, to access the intercooler. Those hoses and pancake pipe will likely be full of oil. They run to IC behind osf wheel, I forget if you need wheel and arch liner out or not.
-
Ok thank u mate as soon as im off work ill take a look
-
There would be normally a small amount in there after all those miles. If seals proper blown, you're looking for a flood when you pop hose.
Don't chuck in the towel so easy. I'm not familiar with your car or how much money and effort you've put into it, but weigh it up; Few hundred quid on a car you're familiar with or punt it and step into the unknown..... :/
Ours is a keeper at 155k miles, I'm waiting for the day when something goes pop.... When it happens I'm throwing a low mileage engine in. Maybe BAM if I can afford it :D
-
Personally ive only had it a year and everything its needed it has had mostly vw parts aswell, its serviced regularly (3 times since ive owned it) due to the miles i travel for work got loads of receipts for parts bought by other owners, so its been well looked after, but im just worried that the engine might go not long after.getting turbo done, ive also been looking at the bam engine and seen a complete 1 for £1,500 with full service history and low miles, but ive also been looking at the coupra R aswell :undecided:, would prefer to do an engine swap but just have no where to do it
-
Is it cable or fly by wire throttle body? Plenty of low mileage, lower spec engines available out there. I'd settle for another lower mileage aum, or auq for the sake of a slightly younger engine.
BAM for me only if I can find a bargain, or tired example and decide its time I try a diy rebuild....
Is there no forum folk around your way could lend a hand with any work?
-
Its an AUM mate so drive by wire, im.really undecided what to do repair what i got or get the coupra R as theres so much more power to get out of them than the aum, im pushing out about 210 bhp now so dont wont anything slower lol but i really love the golf
-
I'd remove the pipe before the pancake (have something ready to catch the oil) you'll lose about a cup full if its the seals shot.
Don't panic if it is this, if you don't want to chuck a load of money at it get a decent second hand turbo, its mainly the labour time that would be a killer but if you do it yourself its not too bad (remember £250 for a turbo to get the car working is less than I've paid for some MOT fail sheets)
-
Yea u got a good point there mate think i will replace the turbo  ill take the pipe off sunday and see if i get loads of oil come out, any links u no of mate for fitting it as i literally have no idea where to start

Brilliant mate thanks alot, seems as u have been really helpfull dont suppose u no a good company that refurbs turbos?? cheers
Or anyone selling 1??
-
Turbo is time consuming to fix but once you've done it should last you a good while - dive in!
-
Just have a look for one local to you because you normally pay a bit for postage.
If you get stuck at any point pm me here and I'll get an email on my phone and will be able to guide you through anything your stuck on :)
-
Ok thanks alot for all ur help mate really appreciate it
Ive bought a turbo now so waiting for the weather to brighten up abit so i can get it done,
Expect a pm when i do start  as im useless when it comes to things like t
-
Where abouts in Wales are you my family live on Anglesey, near Amlwch. Yeah PM away. I would seriously recommend a second set of hands (but that's not a volunteer )
If you weren't too far from Amlwch I am sure that I could help but only get down about once a month
-
Unfortunately im about 4 hours from there mate, i do have another pair of hands but we are both the same and dont have a clue what to do but we've got to start some where
-
print 2 of those guides because when your covered in oil swearing and the pages get full of oil and your holding them upside down you'll want to kill the person the second set of hands belong to
Seriously though, you need a decent tool kit, some ramps or axle stands, all new gaskets, enough coolant and oil, and most of the parts listed in the guides. if you have a strong bar too that's helpful for the bolts on top of the turbo that bolt to the manifold because they are hard to undo. and a set of second hands with the patience of a saint
-
Finally got round to fitting the turbo but now having more problems  the pipe from the intercooler to charge pipe at the back of the engine keeps popping off, still getting blue smoke and also theres a few bits of shard metal in the oil when drained guessing that could be why im smokeing alot
-
pm'd you
