Help my aching brain!
I've been deliberating what to do about sorting out a service plan and can't decide if I'm making things harder for myself or not! I can have a 2 year plan with my local VW dealer which gives me 2 services (minor and major), however I can get a 3 year plan from my supplying VW dealer that includes 3 services (2 minor, 1 major, and an MOT) and the cost over the 3 years will work our £200 cheaper as I would obviously need to add a 3rd year service and MOT onto my local dealers offering.
The only snag is that the supplying dealer is a 100 mile round trip, the local option is 20 miles at the most. I then wondered about going with the supplying dealer and doing the yearly 100 mile trip for servicing and using my local dealer for any potential warranty work. Do you think that one would be funny about the other should I need work carrying out? I don't want to get caught doing 100 miles for an issue when I can take it down the road so too speak!
I did start another thread asking about Inchcape VW which was helpful, they seem good enough, the supplying dealer is from a different group.
My brain hurts!

Warranty work gets paid by VW UK not the supplying dealer, so it does not matter where you service it as long as you are in VW UK warranty as long as it's carried out to VW UK standards.
-
Is this a new car, already purchased etc ?
-
Already have it, I looked on the VW site but I was told that I could only have had something like that at the time of purchase

I'm torn on the service plans available now - it was so easy when you got a 3 year service pack for £199. Now though there are 2 choices, which one to get really depends on how long you might keep the car:-
1. Get the £149 2 year/20k miles pack and then expect to pay big money (probably £500 between services 3 and 4 which will include brake fluid change for service 3, any Haldex fluid changesat 4 years?) if keeping it for 40k+ miles or 4 years. For me, this would involve taking out finance to get it and then cancel within 14 days. All in probably over £600 if keeping it 4 years.
2. Do the £15.99pm service scheme right up to 4 years/40k miles, will cost £575.64. Do you have to state how long you are keeping the car upfront, or could you say start the payment scheme and decide "i'm only going to keep this car to the point it will need 2 paid for services, therefore I will do 18 x £15.99 and stop"?
If I was keeping the car for less than 29k miles, option 1 would definitely be the cheapest option, but do I need to tie myself to a long stint on option 2 on the offchance I might keep this car a long while?

I have got a 3 yr 199 one. Its apparently come back into force then? My dealer told me it was this quarters new deal so maybe go back and investigate?

When did you buy the car?
Any literature I read on it said I had to get the service plan on or before the day of actually signing the finance documents for the car. However when I spoke to my dealer about this on pick up day he told me not to worry as they could still put it through a good bit after collecting the car.

I will have to look into that, the website is still only showing the £149/2 years or £15.99pm option, although we all know the website isn't always up to date or accurate.

You can jump on the £15.99pm deal a good while after collecting the car (90 days?) because you don't start paying for it until the car is 6 months old. The fixed price (£149/199) pack has to be added before payment/finance finalised/collection.
-
I did see that option, I'm over 90 days old though as it was pre-registered. Shame

How long are you planning on keeping the car Mr Pie?
and assuming it's going to be past the 3 year mark then are you planning an extended VW warranty?

Don't you have to take out the official VW extended warranty before the car is registered? There are other non-official options of course.
I'm 90% sure i'll be taking out the extended warranty. Doubtful I will keep the new R the full 5 years, but selling privately after 3 or 4 years appeals to me rather than taking p/x money and i'm thinking that the extended warranty is going to be a big incentive to someone buying a 3 year old car privately that would otherwise have no warranty unless going via a dealer for a £4k mark-up over what I could achieve in p/x or £2k over my likely private sale price.

I didn't know I could extend the warranty past 3 years. Tell you what though, all these little add-ons soon mount up.
-
You can buy an extended warranty from VW dealers that is official. It doesn't cover as much as the extended new car warranty but it protects you from big mechanical bills at least.
I asked about how long you're keeping the car as to whether a service plan is worthwhile. If you're not extending the warranty but keeping it beyond three years I think I'd just get the first two services done at VW then use a highly rated local independent specialist. However if you're extending the warranty then it might be best to keep to genuine VW servicing.
There's no hard and fast right or wrong way of doing things, I've rung up about getting a part ex quote on previous cars and some ask whether there's a service plan on it and some just don't care.
What I will say Mr Pie is that if you're planning on becoming a forum regular then good luck with trying to keep hold of a car for years and years as there will just be too much temptation put in your way in the meantime... :lipsrsealed:
-
Some VW dealerships will have a price match scheme with local independents for serviciing, or offer better rates beyond 3 years (to keep you coming back after the standard warranty has expired). If you know you're going to keep the car 4 or 5 years then the £15.99pm x 36 months for 4 x 10k mile services is your best bet if you're not a high miler, it's just not knowing if you're going to keep it that long.

Mine was the fixed price service and like you have stated I thought it had to be added before collection but my dealer said it was easy to slip it in afterwards so obviously there are ways around it.

Totally agree, I have taken the 5 year warranty on my GTI PP , cost me £500. I am then not under pressure to sell after three years. If the MK8 is on the horizon or I wish to wait for the new registration plate, I can wait worry free without the protection of the warranty. If I sell I will have a major selling point to a private buyer and hopefully secure top book price. Then back to the dealer with cash

I took the 4 year service plan 36 x £15.99

Don't think you can transfer the extra warranty if you sell before it's up. I'm sure I read it in the small print somewhere that it only applies to the original owner.

I thought you could, but with a nominal transfer fee (£20 rings a bell). I will definitely ask, because if I do only want the car for 3 years but want a private sale, it'll be of no benefit. The service packs are definitely transferable (the upfront one payment one at least).
Update: Just googled, about 2/3 the way down this link is transfer for £17.50:-

I'm pretty sure you can too.
-
It must have changed then because they wouldn't let me transfer my service plan on a previous car.

You can't change unused services on a service pack you bought to another car (I asked Mick, as I have 2 unused services on the GTD that would've been handy on the R, service 2 will be getting asked in July no doubt, weeks after I should be in my R), but you can ensure unused services remain with the car when you sell it on via transfer. Mick gave me £100 towards the R for my 2 unused services, if they could not have been transferred to the new owner of the same car, i'd have got nowt for them.
-
In the 2 services for £149 vs entering into the £15.99pm package for 2-4 years, as I aim to keep the R for 3 or 4 years, I will be going for the £15.99pm package:-
1. Keep the car 3 years and get the £149 service, I suspect VW will have my eyes out for service 3 when bought as a drop-in customer, it will probably cost upwards of £250, maybe more as the brake fluid change will be due (this used to be included in the service packs - hope it still is). Going the £149 + 1 other will probably end up costing £400-450, vs 24 x £15.99 (£383.76).
2. Keep the car 4 years, as above but likely £149 + £250 (service 3) + £300 (service 4, if that requires a Haldex oil change) = £699 vs 36 x £15.99 (£575.64).
If only keeping the car 2 years, or if the 3 year/£199 pack makes a return for keeping the car 3 years, then get the pack, otherwise, get the £15.99 plan.
For me not worth going through the hassle of taking out finance and cancelling it within the cooling period to chase the £149 option vs just buying it cash in the first place.
I assume that if you lock yourself into the 4 year £15.99 deal and change after 3 that either:-
1. Your £15.99 payments stop with immediate effect as soon as you realise you won't need your next service on that car or....
2. You have to pay up your remaining £15.99s but the remaining service/s can be transferred to the new owner.
I suspect it is option 1, imagine having your car written off or stolen early doors and being tied in to paying for a service plan on a car that is no longer yours?
