I drive a mk2 and pretty often (when I actually drive it) get compliments/comments on the car. I pulled up in a car park just now and pulled up right next to a stunning mk1 caddy. A couple of lads came over just asking me about the car (mk, engine etc) and saying they liked it. I was more interested in the caddy, but they didn't know who's it was. Anyway, I cant help feeling the reaction wouldn't have been the same for, say, a mk3 :whistle:
But what do you guys find? Any of you sailors or new GTi drivers get a similar response?

My standard mk1 GTI draws attention.
My standard mk6 GTI doesn't.

It's certainly not the answer to your question Waspy, but my Mk6 gets quite a lot of favourable comments and compliments from interested people. Sometimes strangers in car parks, often clients at work sites. At work I regularly go out on site visits with one of our Chief Engineers, who refuses to ever drive as he always wants to go in my GTI.

This doesn't surprise me, yours is so well looked after it likely stands out from the mk6 crowd.
I guess it just comes down to rarity at the end of the day. Interestingly though, the compliments I get have been coming from a younger and younger audience. A couple of years ago it would always be "That's lovely, I had one of these back in the day" but now it seems to be from teens without even a licence. Just a weird observation, the car hasn't changed, just its admirers :huh:

My mk3s grab plenty of attention, I've had mine eight years so I've seen it get more recently due to being less around.
When I had a mk2 it was insane the amount of attention it got even just parked outside work.

I agree. There are a sprinkling of mk1's, 2's and 3's in my works car park and all owned by younger guys in their early 20's. All modified in some way. Nice to see the love has passed to the next generation :laugh:

My candy white ED30 gets plenty of good comments. I do like to see mint mk1 & 2 GTI's tho.

Either the late model (1.8) MK1 or early (pre-big bumper) MK2 16V. Then everything got heavy and flabby, and more difficult to work on. Even the MK7, although faster, is too heavy and complicated to be really like those raw early cars.
