Hi,
I have had my car close to six months and in that time it has had the body work damaged twice now just leaving it parked in a supermarket carpark and in front of my garage.
It just does not seem to be worth having a nice car so I am getting the latest damage fixed and then I am going to dealer and losing 4K getting rid of the car.
Just really f*cks me off that you do not seem to be able have anything decent with out it being damaged and from what I have read on the forum stolen.
So I am going to buy a sh!t heap for 3K not sure what to get for that?
Chris

Totally know where your coming from dude, unfortunatly in this world you can keep nothing good, no matter how much you try its other people with no respect just ruin it.
I always park my car in the furthest place from where I'm going, ie no one parked within 20 spaces of me, come back and 9/10 there will be a car parked 2 feet from me  makes my blood boil.
To most people a car is just a car, a means of getting about and they couldn't care a less about it getting damaged, but they don't consider the other person who's car is their pride and joy
PS I tried the sh!t heap car thing years ago, lasted 2 months and I bought something nice again, life's too short fella enjoy it while you can
-
Know how you feel, I had my Audi a day, and next doors cats used the roof and boot as a scratch post!! (They'd only moved or a week before!!) was not impressed.
Hope you make the right decision mate!!
-
Thanks guys!
I do the park miles away from the shop and like you I come back and someone has left a trolley in the carpark near my car of just crappy parking near my car.
Just can do without the anger.
It was the wife that dinged the door a really windy day a gust of wind and probably 500 pounds worth of damage I am guessing!
I hope I can do more than 2 months with a sh!t heap, have been looking on auto trader and have no idea what to get.

get yourself an old s3 an map it or up the budget to 5k get a focus st or mk5 gti
-
To be fair for 3k it will be far from a sh!t heap lol
For that money I'd be looking for a MK4 Anniversary, maybe a touch more for a good one
-
Rather than lose £4k, keep the car, surely someone can't cause that much damage in future in a parking accident? Get a front and back dashcam that runs on battery pack when parked, or at least switches on with impact detected, catch the feckers in the act. Will be doing just that for mine. I try to take the Sheldon Cooper approach to parking spot choices.

Old Seat Cupra?

Lol, but do you remember Shelley's disastrous attempt at virtual driving!
OP - it's a great shame that a couple of knocks see you considering getting rid of the car. Honestly, I know it's frustrating when people don't give a toss about other's property, but why should you suffer. Keep the car and fingers crossed you've had your quota already and the rest of your ownership may be incident free.
-
lol catch the wife dinging it again!
I am paying 400 quid a month for the next 4.5 years, it is not worth it if I keep getting knocks because I cannot enjoy the car.
-
For this exact reason I have a £300 run around that I use for shopping trips and car park related stuff.
I don't trust any one these days. So many people do not give a flying duck about other people's property.
-

I was the same for a couple of years. It was great but I also found myself still parking out of the way  I got myself a Skoda estate for £350 from Gumtree, kept it for a couple of years then sold it for £150ish.
As for the Golf, I just refuse to go into car parks and only park nose to tail and when I follow my football team every week I need to wait until both cars have parked in front and behind before I leave the car!!
My kids think I'm a weirdo and they are probably right  Although the 3 of them now have their own cars and they do pretty much the same as me but they will take more risks
I'd get another run about for this very reason if it wasn't for the fact we already have 5 cars and turned the front garden in to off street parking and the neighbours think its Steptoe & Sons yard
-
You just have to accept that any car is not going to remain perfect.
Whilst having a stone chip, dink or a dent knocks the sugar off your pudding, that's life.
Either you curse and swear, maybe repair or well, there isn't really an "or".
I'm not saying its not annoying, but once you have one or two minor blemishes, you get less cross as the others inevitably mount up. I was spitting fur a few weeks after I got my GTD and realised that the white thing on my bonnet wasn't bird poo but a large stone chip... but its still there, along with half a dozen others now.
I guess you could buy a 35k car and get one of those garage storage bubble things, leave it in that and never take it out unless you are polishing it, but really, just buy one of those ornaments and keep it on your mantelpiece - its far cheaper than a car. I'd probably choose something more exotic than a Golf though if I wanted a collectors piece.
Your car isn't an investment piece (well, not unless maybe you can keep it for 100 years), a car is just a depreciating money pit.
-
I always park in two bays in the furthest corner in supermarkets and I couldn't give a s4it what others think. It's my car and it's expensive so I'll do what I want with it.
-
Get one of those cheap leases, for the £4000 you plan to lose.
Instead get one of those Up! deals for £60 per month (plus £1000 deposit).
Last month, you could have got a Tiguan (for the wife) for only £120 inc deposit.
-
Remember of course, just because its not your car on a lease, doesn't mean that you don't have to get the dents and scrapes removed before it goes back...
My top tip - never let the lease company charge you for the damage, get it fixed yourself before it goes back - even if it means taking 3 years of minor damage and fixing it all with one bill. It will definitely be less than what the lease company want to sting you for!
-
And be aware of what is actually acceptable damage - you will be surprised!
-
Sure, just work out the estimates costs, the Up will cost £2500 over two years (plus damage repairs at the end) versus your planned loss.

Where is that deal?

Most of their VW deals are financed through VWFS by the way.

That UP! lease deal is superb.
To the OP, don't be too hasty in getting rid of the Golf.
We all get patches where we get nothing but bad luck with our cars and I won't bore you with mine here but I will say that the advice about running an old banger as well as a decent car is sound.
For years and years I've run an old sh!tter alongside a decent Golf or equivalent of some sort which is used for all the jobs that I won't use my Golf for - supermarkets, shopping in general, car parks of any description, running to the dump, picking DIY stuff up etc etc.
Yes it's an additional cost but the wear and tear is much less on the Golf, meaning (aside from blow outs like I had last week) I don't have to stump up for 235/35/19 tyres at nearly £200 each every year and old cars cost peanuts to service, have much less to actually go wrong and you don't bother fixing scrapes and dents.
Then when the mood suits you have the nice shiny Golf GTI/D/E/R sat outside (and being as you don't use it so often it actually feels quite quick so you don't spend endless amounts of cash modifying it either once you're used to the power and it starts to feel slow).
-
Let me get this straight. You have now had three dents, two of which have been caused by your own wife and one in a car park which was unfortunate but can happen to any of us. For this reason, your going to sell the car and lose £4 grand and move to a banger.
Sorry, your reasons for selling don't seen justified to me. Just to tell your wife to be more careful and that will reduce your stress levels
-
Had incidental damage inflicted on all my previous cars but have become very good at not dwelling too much on those that am aware of and definitely do not go seeking them out, if cannot see them standing back then certainly not going to worry about them
Have had to get a scrape that was given to me repaired but outside of that most that lived with just go with territory of car being used daily through each year.
If had collector car would take different view but not going to sacrifice driving a car enjoy being in and seen in for a few wear and tear marks only I can see.
Also if ensure park sensibly then forgive self fully if anything happens as not like can do anything else except never take off the drive!
Yes all very pragmatic but it really is only way to be and still enjoy the car.
On final note, do think colour choice helps, the 2 black cars that had on plain and metallic showed every mark yet this pure white is totally forgiving to the eye. Even when really dirty you only notice how bad when wash it.
Was thinking of the lapis Blue for R may be getting but having recently seen an R in white might just stay on that colour due to nice contrast it gives you with black trim and the aforementioned forgiving nature to dirt and nicks.
-
As above really.
I think you just have to accept that a getting few dings comes with the territory of having a car, any car. The simple fact is you can't completely avoid these things, unless you don't use a car at all.
As for getting a cheap second car as a runabout, that's a fair option BUT you could use it daily for supermarket chores etc and it might never get a mark on it, equally you could take your precious GTI/GTD/R whatever, out once a month and be super careful about where you park but could still end up with a massive stone chip in the bonnet the minute you take it out of the garage.
Life's too short to worry about these things. As someone else said the first cut is the deepest but after a couple of marks/dents, you become a little more philosophical about these things. And if it is the wife is inflicting most of the dints then tell her to mend her ways or trade her in instead of the car

Yep, been there and wrote the book! Grrrrrrrr
An old neighbour of mine has a lovely T5 and swore blind the more he looked after it the more it became a magnet for trouble.
It was ALWAYS having something unfortunate befall it. Poor chap!

Keep the Golf, buy a sh!tter and make the wife drive the sh!tter. When this thread started I hadn't realised she'd done 2 of the 3 incidents.
My mate Stu has an accident-prone wife, she's always scraping the car, so she has a battered old Volvo V40, and as long as she scrapes a shop's oversized wheely bin or a bollard rather than another car, he's not bothered.

That's precisely the same for me.
My wife refuses to drive my GTI and won't even go on the insurance. So the old sh!tter we have now that we've had for about six years has been hit at least twice on the front bumper (parked, after she's been using it), one on the rear with her reversing. Not to mention mysterious faults and noises that only appear when she uses it!!! Grrrr!

Cars are precious, but do you honestly think the novelty of not worrying about it being whacked will wear off when you finally realise how much of a piece of crap you are driving because of the threat of damage. Downgrading is ever so difficult. Dad went from 911 to a TT when they launched the last gen. That lasted 6 months. Then he was back in a 911. He also ran a golf to keep miles off the Porsche, but that was quickly binned for a 3 which he felt happier in.
You will lose the novelty of cheap and cheerful. 4k is also a huge hit. That makes your 500 banger actually cost you £4500 so is it worth it?

Your dad is obviously not skint and is a car enthusiast(?) so it's not like he's gone to a £500 sh!tter that's already covered in dents and marks. He's gone to another mint condition new car but just not one he's as comfortable with or has any particular attachment to. Merely a convenience purchase but still something he wants to keep in good condition.
£4500 isn't quite the figure as the £4k depreciation has happened no matter what, that's just normal new car depreciation and is gone, written off. The £500 isn't on top if the Golf goes, if the Golf has finance on it then I'm sure at least £500 could be saved there alone (but we won't go into potential repair costs of an old heap as some you run for years and nothing goes wrong and some are a nightmare from the start - and probably that's why they were being sold in the first place).
Cars are always a financial drain but are generally preferable to taking the bus...

Isn't it cheaper to have her on whether on not she drives it? My Mum has a license, but hasn't driven for 40+ years. She's probably forgotten how to. Dad still puts her on as a named driver as it brings the premium down.

I used to always think that until I went to get my kids insured with their own cars.
I am £140ish for the GTD so automatically added myself to the kids insurance to try and bring down the premium and the lowest I could get for them was £1200 ish. Which I thought was not bad for a 17yr old.
Then I thought for a laugh I'd see what one of them was on their own and it brought it down to £650!!
Maybe its an age thing though!

I think thats true to a certain extent but you can go a long way to avoid it happening.
Parking in the middle of a row of cars in a supermarket car park is a given that it will get a ding eventually.
Leaving it where kids are playing, all these things speed up the eventuality of it happening.
I don't think its any coincidence that I've not had any dings with my last 2 cars and I don't mean that in a boastful way, far from it. That's just by me being sensible where I park. I certainly don't think its part of the territory of owning a car. I've got to laugh when I look at car adverts now and see "Usual car park dings" in the advert. When did these things become the norm? I know they can happen and you can be just unlucky despite taking all the precautions in the world but I definitely don't think it is to be expected.
-
Ah those car parking blues - don't you just hate them
I remember one time I went to B&Q early on a Sat morning, car park relatively empty but I still parked miles away from the door and when I returned to my car you can guess what was parked next to mine.... Yes! A white transit van    Whole damn car park to choose from an he has to park right next to mine - what is that all about?
Solution to car park dings (well a partial one): make the damn parking bays wider!!
-
Audi drivers will still park over the white lines

I agree, you can definitely take steps to minimise the risk when choosing where to park. To me that's just common sense. For instance when I do the school run I park some way away and just enjoy the extra walk with my daughter. It definitely pays off. As we walk past all the other school run cars who have tried to park as close to the school as possible (lazy buggers) I see all the kids scraping their school bags along the sides of the cars. Not mine.
But there is no guarantee and not all damage is sustained whilst parking. Sometimes things such as hedge scratches etc cannot be avoided, say on a rural road faced with a big lorry that's taken a short cut that it shouldn't have, forcing you into a hedge to avoid getting side swiped. These things can just happen. I actually alter my routes to and from places to avoid such events even if it means a longer journey, costing me more in petrol and time, but there can come a point where you are going to such extreme lengths to avoid damage that it's just silly.
So exercise common sense but if you want a guarantee that your car won't ever be damaged then take the bus.
Those 'usual car park dings' adverts are directed at 90% of the people who park in my works car park, so for them they are the norm
-
Feel you pain my DPB is now a year old and getting a pee'd off with the nick of the bodywork. Had a white mk6 before totally regret not going white again.
So far...
Car keyed on my drive 2nd night I had it!
Slight dent and chip on quarter(daughter opened wife's car onto it)
Bad scratch on quarter (not sure how but reckon it was the wife's ring its inline with the handle)
Another scratch on opposite quarter(looks like something has rubbed down it)
Knew black would be a pain but a bit sick of it now most scratches will polish out but I've not tried as its ceramic coated love the car just not the colour! Will look to change it when it's financially viable.

The trouble is with wider parking bays unless they are really wide ie parent and child size ones, is that their is more of a swing and more force of the door hitting your car and causing a dent, this is generally old people who struggle to get out of their seat and swing the door open. I've seen it numerous times, sometimes when its a little bit tighter people are more aware and get out slower. I just dont take the chance, we always go in the other half's car.

Your wife's ring is level with the handle? Must be taller than mine then...
Sorry, couldn't resist
-
No car remains perfect for long.
I remember my mk6 being double keyed in the first week.
A good scratch repairer, dent man and detailer are good people to know.
Yes, it costs money to keep it looking good. The reward for spending the money is given daily by the car.

Seems the best idea, especially for the moronic types that key cars...
I know the feeling of having your car dented more than once in short space of time and it is irritating but you'd still rather be driving the car you're in than something older or 'lesser'.
Some of this also sounds like being precious of a new item, I think most people are like this with new and expensive purchases. To me it's just as annoying for a £3k car to be dented and scratched as it is for a £30k car. If you don't repair it on the £3k car it still looks sh!t!
You have to learn to enjoy the car and not continually worry about superficial damage. Be happy you have a car that many people cannot afford to run or buy .
-
Costco car parks are perfect. I don't know if its because they are angled or because they are slightly wider or both.
I was reading the other month that car parking space has stayed the same size despite cars getting bigger every year. No wonder folk are constantly getting dings.

Costco spaces are very wide, and they have around 16" border between spaces in addition, for you to open the doors.
-
Is that because Costco know their customers are wider too ;-)

Whether its a sh!tter or a brand new car, its still going to p!ss you off no matter what if it gets dinked or scratched. When I had a Mk1 TT for the summer some (unt keyed the bonnet in a supermarket car park (the car was black so showed up immediately) - that car only cost £4k but I was just as p!ssed off as when some dumb a$s woman let her 5 year old child open her car door onto my month old GTI
-
Yeah unless you bought a car for a few £££ and it was already scratched like the Skoda I bought then you will be still p!ssed off about it.
I also used the Skoda as a test piece for my recently acquired rotary polisher so it was a win win for me
