Title: anyone got a fully restored mk2?
Post by: vw_golf_nutter on 26 March 2015, 16:28
just wondering if anyone has a mk2 that has been fully restored either before you bought it or while youve had it. wondering the cost of the restoration and how much the car is now worth. i know its normally not worth what it has cost but im just curious

A quick look on ebay gives a good indication.

6k seems to get you a really well restored mk2 in a desirable colour. Or you have people like Ken (find him in the dub rides section) who take it to another level and replace every nut bolt and washer to an immaculate level. He is looking to get 12k for his GTD IIRC.

A car like a mk2 is generally going to be restored for personal pleasure gain, rather than financial, because the ceiling is pretty low on their prices. A mustang or something like that has a much higher potential top price so are more likely to be restored for profit.

Ahh okay, I know a lot of people don't like costing it up. Ignorance is bliss, so they say. I certainly will never cost mine up, and mines not even a restoration! Will be interesting to see the replies you get though

Me personally have spent somewhere around 3k, over a 6 year period. It hasn't had a full resto, and to be fair when I bought it for peanuts it was an absolute shed, BUT the shed had nearly no rust as it was more cosmetics. Now in my eyes she looks stunning, turns heads gets compliments all the time. To be fair she would probably would get around 3k if I was to sell, but she aint for sale, shes a keeper ;-)

There is a red one on ebay that a friend is selling. He is asking For 5k but the car is perfect, I get filled with jealousy every time I see it. Completely original and just finished to such a high standard.

To have that car bought, repaired and painted for 3.5k sounds like a pretty sweet deal tbh.

Does that 3.5k include a mk3 leather interior ;-) .... Drove all way to london from Yorkshire for mine. It was worth the drive, the seats were absolutly immaculate! Brings the car together with the anniversary red seat belts!

omg think how smart a red and black leather concept interior would look in mine  :smug: think thats the way to go.
Well so far ive spent £800 buying it
£170 on panels
£130 on MOT & service parts
£800 on the welding and bodywork = £1900 (which is what i sold my old beetle for)
then I will have cosmetics to buy such as the grill and headlamps i want to change.

last night i had an amazing offer from a friend, he said he will paint the car for me  he said would be max a grand and less if i can prep it as much as i can.  yippee!

not doing too bad i think!

Starting from a original one owner car, I've spent around £6k on mine (including the purchase price.) The next job is an engine bay restoration which I am budgeting between £3-4k for, so all in, done, finished, looking factory fresh it will owe me £10k.

What it's worth when it's done, who knows. Personally I don't care as I'll never sell it. It's taken me 5 years to get to where I am now with it, so it's not as if the money's all gone in one hit. I could have easily spent that money in the pub.
