What are your top 5 modifications for mk2 golf gti's ???
-
None. Mk2's should be left standard.
But, if you insist..
Some BBS RS splits with a bit of stretch.
Lower suspension.
Stainless steel OEM style exhaust.
That's about it. :-)
-
That's completely up to the person who owns it. If you are modifying your car, it shouldnt be just what everyone else thinks is good... But anyway:
Subtle drop. Aesthetically better IMO
Strut brace. Handles better IMO
Weighted shift rod. Recommended by many.
Updated headlight loom. Seriously, this is a good one.
Lay-flat rear whiper.
-
Weighted shifts rod ??? Never heard of that before. Where do you get these from and also the headlight loom ?

Weighted shift rod is a mk3 item which adds weight to shift link meaning you get a nicer feel when you shift. They come up on eBay from time to time. Or I have one which I could sell, but not for a few weeks.
Up rated headlight loom makes your headlights brighter. Simple as that. Again you will find these on eBay, or can make one yourself if you are that way inclined, plenty of guides online.

Best mod for Mk1/2/3 imo with some good quality bulbs, candle power just does not cut it these days...
2.0 bottom end with PB head and fast road cam for 8v comes in second for me.
Removing big bumpers from pre 90 spec cars
The valver should just be restored OEM, polished with love and marveled at
280 4 stud brake upgrade is well worth it on all MK2's.
-
Cheers for the shift rod explanation. Might keep my eye out for one of them
My car is a November '89 so should it be a small bumper model I assume ? Have been thinking on and off about putting small bumpers on along with the proper chin spoiler as this is how my old golf from years ago was but don't mind the bigger bumpers I suppose
-
Personally I prefer big bumpers. Mine was an 89 and had big bumpers. Iirc didn't some 89 late models get big bumpers?
-
late 89 G plate cars iirc
-
Can't you tell by the side mouldings? If your car has skinny sides, it got a fat bumper.

Yeah mine was a late G

This! Honestly it makes a massive difference.

I've done most of these, well the shift rod was on the car when I bought it years and years ago, so can't comment on what its like without it.
I have however put Eibach springs on the original Bilstein shocks, and have an upgraded loom I got from Ebay. The loom is really essential as without it I could drive with Full beam and no one would even flash me, it was that weak!

As a side note, I too have this set up and like it a lot. Had coilovers before them, hated. So if you are planning a drop and don't need adjustability, this is a good choice :)

Eibach Springs
Decent new Shocks
All Bushes checked / replaced
Recaro Seats
Timing / Fuelling checked.
done.
-
weighted shift rod still available from the dealers at around £19 should be 1HO 711 183 "Selector shaft"
-
There are also some for sale on this site,

ABF is a pretty good mod
-
decent 5th gear set is a top priority if you do long runs/motorway commutes.

Tell me more. I really want this, but didn't want to change the box, as 1-4 is really quite good (maybe 1st is a little short)
-
well the 5th gear set I have fitted is a .80(original is .89) you can also fit a .75 from a chc/chd diesel gearbox but I find they give to big a gap between 4th/5th. the mk3 gti 8v also has a .80 5th gear set but there is a slight difference in the retaining circlip which can be overcome easily with a shim iirc. gear set can be changed in situ if you remove front engine mount and lower engine and box down about an inch. the gear set I have was out of a mk3 golf 1.4. cant remember the code but I will try and find it.
-
Great info, thanks!
How much does it change cruising revs? I current cruise 80@4k rpm.
-
hey no probs man  the gearbox code was cza but there is probably a few different boxes with the .80 ratio. at 4krpm now my car is doing 92mph. 70mph at 3krpm. its quite a noticeable change to the cars cruising ability.
-
Well, sounds like a future mod for me then :)
-
Put the 1Y CHC 5th gear in from the mk3 diesel. Straight swap and all the info you'll need is on brokevw. Did that with mine and her top speed now is just shy of 130!!
(Not that I've pushed her that hard ;-) ..... and yes good mpg for motorway cruising and will just about pull you along at 40mph when in suburbia.
