Title: Mk2 GTI 8v starting problems
Post by: Cabbagecuddler on 21 March 2015, 16:44
Hi there. I know this has been a posted before but I've been through all the suggested solutions so need some extra help on this. My golf will always start in the morning but it's really lumpy and you often have to rev is a few times to help it idle but then it's fine. Also when you doing a lot of stoping the engine and starting it begins to not like starting. Doesn't happen often though. To solve this I have done following:
Replace ISV, clean throttle, replace blue temp sensor, clean breather and valve, clean air intake and filter, reset the ECU and adjust the idle. The tappets have all been replaced, new timing belt, HT leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap and new vacuum hoses.. Timing double checked. Full service with oil and coolant flush. Everything has helped to improve engine but nothing has fixed the starting issue.
It starts perfect after the first morning start and drives like a dream with good MPG and no smoke.
Any suggestions??

My mechanic has suggested that although the ECU is working as a whole, it's possible that the circuits that control the ISV have corroded. Anyone come across a partial failure of the ECU. Mine is a Digi 2.

Hello mate, I seem to the have the same issue with my 8V. I have an idle issue also, car seems to idle quite high on a standstill and when locking the steering wheel. Have you managed to sort yours out now? if so, could you help?

Thanks
Raj

Do you know anyone else with a mk2 golf? Might be a good time to ask a favour and swap ECU's to test the mechanics theory before you think of forking out on another ECU!
