Title: Standard Media screen size
Post by: Sootchucker on 16 March 2015, 07:48
Hi guys, just a quick question please.

The wife and I were in our local VW dealer yesterday (just browsing ), and as the wife has a Polo Blue GT (which she loves), she was quite interested in the new Polo GTi (which they had one in).

I won't go into a debate on the Polo, but one thing I noticed is that they now have MK7 type electronics i.e. Golf 7 Steering wheel, head units etc, with all the snazzy display screens we get on our MK7's. However, looking at the head unit and reading the brochure, it seems the Polo gets a composition media unit (with the option of composition Navigation), but the screens are 6.3" diagonal rather than the 5.8" of the MK7's.

Now whilst it doesn't sound a lot, one of the reasons I went for the Nav Pro in my GTD was that I thought the standard screen looked a little "lost" in the dash, and didn't like the very thick frame around the edge, which (to my eye only), looked like looking at the screen though a tunnel. Somehow, the screen in the Polo (albeit just a little larger), looked brilliant and I could see if that was offered in the MK7, I wouldn't have chosen the nav pro. Does anyone know if this slightly larger screen system is coming to the MK7 platform ? It also seems to have full SMS capability built in (whilst at standstill), and allows you to read and compose SMS messages,  something certainly mine doesn't do. Also, at last (at least looking at the one in the showroom), the DAB radio shows full slideshows and radio data graphics that fill the screen (a major annoying on my £1700 system that can't do it !).

It's rumoured that the larger screen may be brought in at bw22 or possibly bw45.  Those of us with a post 22 build week (mines est 28) live in hope

Ah thanks, here's hoping.

For others (whilst not the best pictures), here's a couple of just grabbed off the web. As you can see, the Polo (1st image) system has a much smaller frame running around the edge of the screen which makes it appear much larger.

I was under the impression that only the Polo GTI gets our style of steering wheel, not the rest of the Polo.range. Did you get many pics of the GTI? Definitely a contender for the wife if I can't get a job at her place when I'm made redundant.

Nah sorry MH. The only GTI they had was in the compound at the back and it was a a sold car, so whilst we could look from a distance, we couldn't get in it (for obvious reasons).

They did however have two other Polo's in the Showroom (an SEL and an SE I think), standard models, but they both had the composition media system (albeit no nav) and the MK7 steering wheel (with no adaptive cruise though, this is an option on the Polo, so that button in the middle on the left side appears to just be a blank).

Did look really nice though.

As an aside, couldn't believe how many Golf R's they had round the back - I must have counted about 25-30, in all colours and all with the standard 18" alloys - and everyone was sold - on leases !

My wife has a new Polo and it's not just a bit bigger, the screen resolution is higher... Album art which won't show on my Discover Nav does show on the Polo's media screen.... Bugs the hell out of me!

The 2nd picture is the smaller version on the golf 7 surely?? The nav pro is bigger than that or have I misunderstood?

Looks to me that the first pic is the Polo GTI, and with only 1 screen size available, there is no need for the huge surrounding frame that we see on the second pic (standard Golf screen) that makes the aperture difference between the standard Golf/discover nav (that needs the frame) and the Pro screen (which doesn't). Your Pro screen will be bigger than the Polo's.

I'd still get the nav pro as the big screen looks perfect. The polo unit doesn't look lost even though it's only 0.7 inches bigger.

I too was looking at Polo's this weekend! My wive is going to buy an SE Design, I couldn't interest her in the Blue GT or GTI - she doesn't care about the extra power, although liked the look of the Blue GT in the showroom.

Can confirm - the Blue GT had the same steering wheel as my GTD, was a strange feeling sitting behind it in a polo :)

Also noticed the screens do look nice, and I think the Polo is a cracking car for the money.

We are going for a 5dr 1.2 TSI DSG, she only does about 5000 miles a year so should serve her very well. I'm looking forward to my our first DSG too.

I'm going through the DTD/Carwow charade again now... annoyingly it can be about 6 months for a Polo at the moment!? A bit off topic, but if anyone has managed to get DTD prices on new cars in stock please let me know - prices seem to take a big hike up if you aren't prepared to wait 6 months. DTD discount is 17% on Polo's!

I also sat in a CC, very nice place to be - the leather seats and cabin seem to envelope you.

One thing I am unsure about - is the cruise control in the Polo GTI active (radar controlled) ACC as per Gof?

yes it is.

Actually radar cruise control is an option, standard cruise is what's fitted as standard to certain models, and it doesn't even appear to be an option on the GTi, just the Blue GT downwards ?

Wow! 6 months for a Polo? I was hoping it would be a lot less than that, especially on a GTI which isn't expected to have anywhere near the uptake as a Golf GTI. Don't know if the missus could be arsed to wait that long when she could have a Mini Cooper in an instant.

I know, I couldn't believe it . The GTI could be different though, maybe they make those in in Wolfsburg? Our polo comes from South Africa, which was another surprise - makes watching the shipping a little less fun!

DTD phoned me and said late July but other garages are saying 24/26 weeks, so I'm wondering if the DTD dealer are being optimistic.

Mini is another option for us too, her current car has started playing up so it may come down to if she can wait that long (if I can't find a good price on a car already in the country.)

AFAIK (unless it has changed), 5 door Polo's are built (as you say) in South Africa, and 3 Door Polo's in Spain at Pamplona.
