Well after much deliberating I am close to making a decision to order something..
I have decided if I go for it, I am going to order a GTi PP rather than a GTD. I think it would just be a tad annoying every time I saw a GTi if I had a GTD so for the extra cost I think it is worth it..
Have been offered a decent deal by my local dealer with just over 10% off list, + the £750 contribution. Spec I am planning on is -
5 Door Manual
Tungsten Silver (to be a bit different)
Performance Pack
Pan Roof
5 Year Warranty
Maybe Keyless entry (worth it ?)
Maybe reversing camera (worth it ?)
Going to keep it fairly tight on spec or the cost gets silly. This brings me in at just under £27k after discount which aint bad at all.
One question - I want to put in max deposit and they are saying 30% - I thought it was more than that you could put in on PCP ? Would anyone recommend going down the regular HP route with VW ?

For what it costs the camera is excellent value for money.

VW want you to have at least 70% of the list price of your car on finance - so they can make more interest out of you. If you buy a £30k car for £27k, you can only add in an extra £6k of your own money to take you down to £21k (70% of £30k).
If you have enough money in the bank to say only need to finance £15k, you could always get a bank loan for as little as 4% APR and no arrangement fees, and then push for 12% discount rather than rely on the £750 deposit contribution. Have a good look on MSE's website. Do you have anything to chop in? If not you could just go to a broker.

Borrow the money from a bank. APR rates are far lower than VW Finance. I got 3.9% APR fixed about a month ago. Money is fairly cheap to borrow at the moment. I am only paying just over £600 interest over 3 years compared to a few grand through VW Finance :shocked:
I agree with other comments too. Go through a broker to save even more off of list price :laugh:

Tbh I don't need to take the finance but if I can get a good rate I prefer not to tie up all my cash in a car up front... Partly as I can use my car allowance from work to cover any payments.. But I don't want to pay over the odds for finance.
I am not trading anything so its a straight sale really. Would prefer to use my local dealer because they have been very good to me with test drives, sorting out quotes etc etc and I have found you get better service if you are a bit loyal.. Plus we bought gf's A1 from the same group. If it was big money difference I wouldn't care but if it means saving a few hundred I would prefer the better service..
I will certainly think about reversing cam and keyless as they are fairly cheap options..

Loyalty has a price - for me it's probably £300. If the cost to change is more than £300 with a local dealer than a broker, i'll be off to the broker. They can usually get there if incentivised by you knowing what other deals are out there.
Sure you don't fancy going the whole hog and getting an R with a 12% discount? You'll probably be able to get a GTI quicker though!

Good choice Andy, I had the GTD for a year and have just changed to a GTI PP, I much prefer the GTI now that I have driven it for the last 3 weeks, I drove the R and owned a MK6 R but as an all round everyday car the GTI ticks all the boxes for me. Enjoy

I already drove an R and to be honest I prefer the all round appeal of the GTi. No matter what the hardware underneath,paying 26-27 for a gti is my limit, I just have a problem paying 30k + for a golf or in fact anything with a 4 cyl engine under the bonnet !!
I can see the appeal in the R but it doesn't do it for me. I actually see far more R's than GTi's on the road and I think that makes the GTi more desirable as a daily driver at least, plus I need to keep the running costs sensible as it isn't the only car..
The gti would be my daily drive, I have the BMW 330ci for weekend which, like it or not, makes a sound and goes with effortless grunt that no 4 cyl engine can ever hope to replicate regardless of power outputs !!
