Hi guys, so I've owned my GTD for just over a month now and really love it, although there is one issue that really bugs my now and again and that is trying to select reverse gear(manual gearbox).
Basically roughly 50% of the time (maybe more)I try and select reverse gear it just does not go in, I have to try about 2 or 3 times to get into reveresed and when it eventually goes in it still isn't smooth.
To begin with it didn't bother me that much but even my wife comes home and mentions it, car still only has just over 5k miles, I just feel this should not be an issue for a £25k car
I haven't mentioned to my dealer yet but perhaps I should
Seriously considering trading to a DSG

You are seriously considering spending a lot of money to buy a replacement car rather than ask your dealer to look at why your £25k car is hard to put in reverse?

Lol we are going to upgrade to a DSG car in the next year or so anyway so this wasn't the deciding factor even though I made it sound like that sorry
Just called the dealer so waiting for them to call back, what's the bets they say it's just normal :undecided:

Hi Cossieian, I've never had any issue selecting reverse in my manual GTD. Sounds like something is up with it (unless you are not pushing the stick down or something ;))

Cheers ffrank, Im confident I'm using it correctly, now it's gonna be just a matter of persuading VW it ain't right

Depressing the clutch all the way? I've noticed if your seat is too far back you can find forward gears with less clutch, but reverse needs it all the way.
Do you ever find it not starting when you turn the key too?
-
Yeah I've not had any issues with reverse. First can sometimes be a bit of a pain to get in after a stop-start (engine going off) but a dab of throttle eases it into gear.

No gear selection problems with my new GTD 1500 miles and smooth into all gears.
I think the left to right gear leaver movement is converted into rotation of the shaft to the gearbox on them so maybe needs alighning and you will be fine. Try a little extra pressure over towards the passenger side and see if it engages better or maybe a little less pressure kind of holding it towards the drivers side to confirm. I might be talking rubbish and it's done differenty on these newer vw's.

If you try select reverse and it doesn't go in. Take your foot off the clutch and re-depress the clutch and try again... If that doesn't work...
It is amazing how people throw their hands in the air at the slightest issue.
The tolerances in a modern gearbox are very tight - I've seen situations where a single shim can be the difference between being able to select a gear or not - or a slight misalignment in the selectors and wear can mean that they may need some maintenance... Assuming the car is still under warranty... the dealership should be able to diagnose and sort it...

no probloms on my GTD finding reverse . but i do find going from first into second a bit notchy /sticky especially when cold ? anyone else have this ?
its going back to the dealer soon to have it looked at in any case...
-
Yep my GTD crunches from 1st to 2nd when cold and has done for 22k miles. Slightly better when warm. I had a VW Touran which did exactly the same until I got rid of it at 90k miles. Took that back after 5k miles and the deaaler had it for 4 days to try it from cold and said there was nothing wrong with it.
Our Fabia VRS with DSG doesn't crunch in any gear, just burns oil and the box will fail completely one day

I thought this was perhaps just me being sensitive, but I also get this.

Its a feature, my mk6 GTD manual did the same from about 10k miles all the way to 80k miles before I chopped it in, did get slightly worse but not enough for VW to fix it. They just agreed with me that it was notchy. 0-10k miles was as smooth as possible.
