Just curious after writing my last post about DCC.... who would like to claim to having a full house or close to full house options list?
There must be someone on here with 30k's of options :)
-
Having a quick scan through the VW used car section - it's surprising how many GTI's are way into £30k plus territory which is bang in the middle of R pricing. Then again it's surprising how many R's are around the £40k mark (or just under) which to me is mad money for a Golf. But at the end of the day people must buy these so they're out there amongst us!
I guess to someone with heaps of cash who has several cars and has a GTI as a small runabout bought solely because it's a Golf GTI (badge buying) then they'll think little of loading up on the options.
Even if the GTI depreciates £15k in its first year I guess that'll seem low in the grand scheme of things compared to their Range Rover which probably lost more than double that amount...

You're right... £40k for a Golf when you could have this instead?

For me, no competition... I'd do that and buy a cheap run-about for the mundane stuff
-
Same question tbh with anyone loading a car? Why add 5k's of extras to a Fiesta when you could buy a Focus for the same money...
Usually, because people want a X sized car but with toys rather than a Y sized one.
As for GTI vs R... well, again, I might want Sat Nav or Leather rather than 300bhp and 25mpg. If money was no object I'd have them all, but we all make choices...
-
I was well on the way to ticking all the boxes !
Discover Navigation Pro
Keyless
Leather
Winter Pack
Climate Windscreen
Advanced Telephone Prep
DCC
What would I do again if re-ordering ?
Nav Pro - not worth the money, was sold it on the basis of it having Carnet - wasn't happy when it arrived, and its not available in UK
Keyless - Love it, would definitely order again, so user friendly when you have shopping bags or kids.
Leather - Would order again, but CERTAINLY not worth what VW charge, should be half the price at least.
Winter Pack - annoyed, as this actually comes free with leather !! so would not order again
Climate Windscreen - Would sort of order again - but see below, all cars should come with this, even if it's only used a dozen times a year or so.
Advanced Telephone Prep - NO NO NO !!!! just unnecessary, why this was forced on me is beyond me, I use an iPhone 5S and not once have I used the cradle in the arms rest for the phone, it works wherever you have it in the car, even at the weekend, cleaning car on drive a phone was in the house, and still I picked up Bluetooth perfectly !!
DCC - wouldn't order again, yes you can tell the difference between modes, but mine spends 99% of its time in normal, and the ride is great, much better than the mk6 gtd (I'm only on 18" std wheels)
All in all though, I've had the car 17 months, and I would get rid of it if I could, it's been nothing but a pain since I picked it up - I honestly had the car 10 minutes after collecting it, when every warning light came on, and it was back into the garage for nearly 3 weeks ! since then, one daft little problem after another, which all add up, and to top it off - it's a GTD and I get on average 36mpg driving like a nun ! - Feel totally let down by VW and the dealer - and will probably never own another unless I go for the R when mine is back at the dealers again next week................
-
Nuggsy: No cause to reject at this stage? Sounds like you got a lemon, chances are another would be pretty much fine. If you’re only getting 36mpg get them to reject the GTD and leave you in it while an R gets built for you. Agree on the ridiculous pricing and quality/usefulness of some of the options you have there (that’s why I rarely partake in extras beyond paint and sometimes wheels).
Pulman or Benfield for dealer?
-

That's definitely not right unless you are properly hooning it every time you go out... or drive just to the end of the road and back...
-
When I ordered the car, it was to be a kept for around the next 7-8 years so hence I thought I would load it with the toys I wanted, in hindsight, and change of job, It will be going asap !
It's definitely a Friday afternoon built car !
Pulman Durham dealer
-
Car is used to travel to and from work, (Durham to Gateshead) around 14 miles each way, and driven like a nun, (in normal mode) normal traffic driving varying on speeds of 30 - 50mph - and I don't have loads of dead bodies in the boot !
-
The wheel upgrade is a complete rip off. £1000 and it's not as if you get to keep the 18's as well.
The tyres would retail at around £20 more each corner and the wheels, lets say £50 to be generous. So if VW were to charge £300 for the upgrade to 19's I think it would be more like it, but £1000??? Really???

Pulman Durham dealer
If you want shot and have grounds for rejection, it's going to be by far the cheapest option to get rid. My R will be my first VW from the Durham branch. I usually go to Sunderland, but my go-to salesperson transferred to Durham branch and I sought him out there. He got me within £200 broker discount on the R and £500 more in p/x than the broker supplying dealership would have given on my GTD, well pleased with that.

I felt I had to with the R. I ordered with Cadiz, but as time went on I didn't like them, and liked the delicate looking Prets more. It's a lot of money for what they are, but it's my one extravagance on the car being a bit of an option-phobe.

Whether getting 36mpg for the past 17 months is grounds for rejection, on top of all other problems, will have to wait and see. but not happy with Durham branch, we also have a Tiguan bought new from there, we wanted the SE version which we had test driven, and were given a great deal on a show room model.
This was a SE model, but we found after picking it up, due to the fact it had 19" alloys, it comes with sport suspension set up, and the ride make your teeth fall out ! and she feels sick due to the ride, - and had no support from Pulman what so ever.
after 6 cars from Pulman over the years, I really don't want to go back

Just playing with the configurator, you can spec a GTI 5 door with this lot:
Keyless Entry £360
Discover Pro nav/radio system (DNS PRO)
£1,765
Side airbag system, rear (5-door only)
£275
Park assist
£150
Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC)
£815
GTI Performance Pack
£995
Winter Pack with leather
£245
Panoramic sunroof (or 19"' wheels for 1000 quid extra - you can't have both)
£920
Advanced telephone connection
£315
Dynaudio soundpack
£535
High Beam Assist
£0
Rear view camera
£165
Climate windscreen
£295
Lane Assist
£950
Door Sill Trims (5 door)
£134
Rear Bumper Protection- Steel
£146
That makes £39,390 as opposed to £26,580 for a GTI 3 door with no extras - best part of 13k of extras....
Add things like roof bars, mats etc, it makes a 40k Golf GTI.
-
Yep, a £40K GTI that will be worth £18k after 12 months!
-
What would a 26k base model be worth after 12 months?
Just curious!
-
Fred - you forgot the leather interior!!
-
No, its got leather - it just doesnt list it :D
-
Silly me.....
-
What would a 26k base model be worth after 12 months?
Just curious!
Around 75% of it's original list price, so £19.5k trade, or £24k on a dealers forecourt.

Yep, actual trade value with average to below mileage will be about £19k for a boggo one and maybe £20k for a Christmas Tree spec, £22k if a dealer is in a good mood or sniffs out a good deal.
Mine (3 door PP model with just nav and a couple cheapo options) that has a very low mileage and is 15months old books at between £18k and £19k realistically so a £1k difference in trade value at top book money for a dealer to play with, as it's pretty much mint condition with as new tyres.

17 months on, you've realistically got no chance of rejection now. 36mpg is dire, but as it is i'm not doing much better at about 41mpg right now on my uncluttered 13 mile commute, but i'll freely admit I do give the car a bit of a hammering at times (comparable to my old Scirocco though, it is poor). My mpg is down 10% right now following a fill up on Asda's finest after about 5 consecutive tanks of BP. Very naughty of them giving you a sports suspension set-up SE rather than the standard one. I'd guess it was noticed almost straight away and they wouldn't let you bring it back?
-

What kind of MPG were you getting in the summer? If its any consolation my last four fill ups from the middle of December have averaged 38MPG
-
I'm currently on 39.5 long term and that's with short journeys to work during the week and sometimes days out on a weekend. Am at 48 since last full up but that was after a jaunt to north Yorkshire and back.
-
Since I got the car, long term mpg has been around 36, weather hasn't affected consumption really.
Doing the same journey in my last mk6 GTD, I was averaging 46-48mpg, on a good run I'd get 56-60mpg.
-
Colder temperatures really affect the mk7 diesel. It knocks up to 10mpgs off.

Thats exactly what I get now - something not right with your Mk.7 figures....
-
I basically get around 350 - 360 miles out of a tank of fuel when filled. (tried various fuels too)
Hopefully they may find out what the problem is next week, but not holding out much hope.
I've tried the car in sport, normal and eco, and always end up with the same figures
Car regens usually every 2 weeks, not sure what everyone elses does? but I do approx. 200 miles per week Monday to Friday, sits on drive over weekend.
-
Have you tried using millers diesel additive? how often do you check your tyres and has it been back for the handbrake update?
-
Have you tried letting your wife or someone else drive the car?
It could easily be something that you are doing (sub conciously)
-
Thats what I am thinking Fred - the way an individual drives a car is the biggest variable - all other things should be largely the same....
-

Really? I know it is sad :undecided: but I track my fuel consumption using using Road Trip and, for me at least, there is no correlation between low temperature and increased fuel consumption.
And it is not down to the extra use of equipment... According to the car even with lights, heated rear window, heated mirrors etc. etc. the additional burden is less than 0.05 g/h...
-
Best I can achieve on a long journey right now (>50 miles) during daylight and minimal heating (16C, no aircon) is around 52mpg. In the height of Summer, with the aircon belting out, 58mpg has been achieved, generally maintaining 80mph (indicated) on the motorway.
I've always seen a 5mpg/10% drop in the winter for 6 previous VW TDIs, attributing it to the denser/drier air, taking longer for the oil and water to warm and possibly winter diesel being a smidge less calorific than summer diesel. This GTD seems to be more affected by the cold (in terms of mpg) than any other TDI i've had.
-
Got my GTD about 2 weeks ago, got 380 miles to my first tank before the orange fuel light came on, that is driving mostly round town aside from a couple long runs of about 60 miles each :undecided:
Must admit I was expecting a bit more, but you have to remember it only has a 50L fuel tank which is less than any other car I've owned.
This week it's been quite cold and I've never been able to get over 38MPG :embarrassed:, it's around 35 at best on run to work, about 4 miles.
My car has went into Regen 3 times I think in 2 weeks, roughly every 200 miles or so
Loving driving the car, it's superb
-
By the sounds of other peoples comments on here, maybe 36mpg is the norm
Mine is DSG which does give slightly less mpg than a manual
but from the official quoted book figures (taken with a pinch of salt) of around 55 mpg for urban driving - I'm getting approx. 35% less - which I'm not that happy about.
Friend of mine has a manual though, and does similar commute to work, and averages 47mpg - which is what I would have expected.
Will see what VW have to say next week, and will pass on any updates
Thanks all for your comments

Have you learnt to back off the throttle? (serious question!)
When I first got my GTD, I couldn't crack more than 40mpg, until I learnt that I don't need to push the throttle nearly as hard as I had done previously and still it flies along...
Stick the display onto immediate fuel consumption and try modifying how much you are pushing the pedal.
Obviously if you are driving the nuts off of it you won't do this, but... even really bouncing off of the rev limiter, in sport mode, nailing every corner, I don't get anything like that poor a mpg...
-
I have started to monitor what I am getting on journeys where the car fully warms up. I have done the same 28 mile trip four times in the last two days. My figures were 50, 51, 54 and 52mpg respectively (mfd indicated average).
The journeys were 80% motorway with ACC set to 70mph, outside temps down to 2.5 on the last trip.

Thinking out loud
One of the problems with the GTD for mpg/cold weather may be the oversized front grille opening. It was probably designed for the GTi and fitted to the GTD weather it need the large opening or not. Blocking some of that off may allow the car to get to operating temps sooner over the winter months. May guess is the GTD never gets to optimum temp during the winter and this hurts the mpg.
You could do with a variable opening based on temps, not sure if the blue motion stuff does this as not up on VW eco things...

Getting to operating temps during the winter months depends on how far you drive it and how hard. In m experience, you need at least 10 miles not driving it hard nor like a nun before the oil is up above 90C.
The cooling circuit won't start circulating coolant until the water is up to temp, that still means it is cooling a little until the oil is up to temp, around 4 miles later, but it has to circulate to even out the heat being generated. The MK7 doesn't have the grille flaps like the BMWs were touting a good few years ago (and may still have them).
