Title: engine change
Post by: nodwardo on 13 February 2015, 15:25
Hi guys.

Cant find any posts relating to my exact question so apologies if this is a bit of a 'obvious question'.

I have the 2.0 gti, and before anyone says i know its sh*te, so i was thinking of putting an 1.8t in but dont know which is the best version to buy. Ive heard theres a few variations of this engine.

Also is it much of a job to change or is it like for like bar the obvious things like intercooler etc

Thanks in advance!

Bam is a popular engine to put in, you'd probably have to change the wiring loom and everything though which would get expensive . I think you'd be better off just selling the 2.0 then replacing it with a 1.8t to be honest, 1.8t's sell for quite cheap nowadays anyway.

If not that I'd look out for a donor car.

I didnt think of a donor car! Good idea! Ive seen a few engines knocking about that come complete with loom, box, engine etc. Basically everything except the turbo and intercooler for a little over £400. Mileage doesnt matter as id probably rebuild it anyway just so its fresh!

That's not a bad price but you'd still have to change the brakes, driveshafts and (hubs?)

I didnt realise all that was to change aswell??

The stock driveshafts won't cope with the amount of torque I wouldn't think, and as for the braking, it's up to you, but you'd be silly not to change the brakes in my opinion. I'm not too sure about the hubs, but I'd imagine they are different on the 1.8t

No probs thanks for the headsup. Just had a reply off a guy and he said i can have everything down to the brake pedal for £300. Absolute steel. But id probs be upgrading the turbo, intercooler etc anyway for more power.i had an s3 a few year back and i think it was an AUG engine and it popped so im still a bit wary atm!

Stock internals are meant to be good for up to 300ft pounds of torque + 300-350bhp, but anything after that and your conrods may snap (or so i've heard)
So keep that in mind if you're thinking of going down the big power route

the s3 was never fitted with the aug engine  plenty of cheap 1.8ts about with no mot so gets you everything you need

standard gti shafts would cope no problem

And th anti-rollbar and some coolant pipes

Its not simply plug and play

My mate Dave did this conversion a few years back and bought a donor car

I'm assuming this would be the same for a auto to manual transmission conversion too? Doner car would have all the items I needed?

No, a doner car would be smelly pretty soon, the yogurt sauce and meat will ferment in no time

Are they the same fitment / same length as the 1.8t shafts aswell then?

Wouldn't you be better off just buying a 1.8t gti?
Would surely save a lot of money and effort

Yeah definately but ive done that much to my golf id have to start from scratch again. And to be honest the way it is now took about 4months to do, finding all the bits etc..... thought maybe an engine change would be an easier way. Now i dont think so haha

By doing an engine swap you can replace all the silly pipes, do the cambelt etc whilst the engine is out and on a stand

That way you know its as close to 100% going into the car

Yeah ive already kind of sussed all this out. Id probably be changing every pipe to samco/smaco version anyway and maybe polishing alot of it up aswell so it would be as close to new as possible even with it being old. The only problem is, itll start out a reasonable priced job and ill make it expensive because i cant help myself but buy every single part upgraded/coloured/shiny lol. Would be awesome in the end but very expensive lol

Yes expensive, to a person not interested that much into cars, how I see it is, if you want to do it, then do it, people have told me it's not worth doing the engine/box change in my Cabrio, but I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't have any hobbies as such, so my car is my hobby..people spend money painting model airplanes, train spotting...and I don't judge...so yes...its expensive, but if you enjoy it..then you have my full support*

*DISCLAIMER just to clarify you do not have my financial support, just my moral support

Still on the look out for a donor car. A cheap one anyway that has a good running engine. Viewed a couple and my god the engines sounded like swinging a bag of hammers about. The search continues!

Do you still need a donor car?  I have a 1.8T, AGU engine with only 63k on it.  The engine is absolutely solid as a rock, but the suspension and bodywork isn't great.  The AGU if you pop a better turbo on is the best combination, no coil pack issues.  Engine has been serviced every year my myself since I owned it, new oil, filters etc.  Bought it on 24k and have got it up to 63k in the 6 years of ownership.

Just to give you an idea, it just passed it's MOT, so has 13 months on it, lots of advisories, but not a single one for the engine etc.

With the car you'd also be getting a forge TIP, uprated engine mounts, pipercross filter, 007p divertor valve, and 312mm front brakes.  Best bit, it also has R32 dials inside, coded to the car

It sounds to me like it'd be ideal for what you need!  Would you be interested?
