Hi all, apologies if this topic has been covered before.
I'm currently on the look out for a commuter car that can cover 500 miles a week. I'm aware that the mk4 1.9 TDIs are great economical engines. I would like a mk4 that I can't tweak slightly (OEM+) as and when I have a bit of spare cash but generally to keep standard as a comfy enjoyable cruiser.
Can anyone shed any light on which Diesel engine is the 'one to get'? I will have around £3000 to spend all in all.
Thanks
Matt

Personally I'd buy on condition and mileage rather than which engine it has. It's more likely to be a 130 as there are loads more to choose from.

Happy with that. I heard from somewhere there was a common fault to do with the engines on the 150 TDIs? Was wondering if there was any truth in that.
I've heard plenty of people raving about the 130 TDIs.
Cheers

Chocolate camshafts tend to affect the 150's. Can cost approx £800 to put right
If the car has done 100k or so miles and the problem hasn't occurred keep it in the back of your mind that it may be a problem

I've got an AVF 130 in my A4 with a 6 speed auto.
Even with the auto its pretty quick for a barge so I can only assume it would be better in the Mk4
Maps nicely too

Isn't it the same part numbers used across the 130 and 150PD? The 130 is just as liable to chocolate camshafts I'll just come in higher mileage.

was it not just a certain year of car that was affected on both models :undecided:

Not that I was aware of, thought part number 038109101 was used throughout production of the ASZ and ARLs'

never checked as I have never had a diesel mk4 but sure a mate was saying something about it being certain year they had chocolate cams but he could be wrong

Yes the 130 has the same camshaft but how many 130's do you hear of that have suffered from the chocolate camshafts compared to the 150's :undecided:
As for model year, anything past 2002 as they were first available in the Anni TDI
I think Steve_PD's was either a 52 or a 53 plate so if its the later it means its not just a certain model year.......

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try my luck and like you say "account for a £800 bill" worst case. At the end of the day most cars have demons of some sort!
I'm pretty sure on it being a mk4 TDi for my commute. Still gonna keep the mk2 gti as my guilty pleasure though.
