I have got a mk2 1.3 golf and the fan doesn't come on when it's up to temperature I know the fan works because I linked it straight to the battery have read up on it can't seem to find a straight answer for it but by the sounds of it its the coolant temp sensor but I don't get how it could be that if it reads it's up to temperature or is there a thermal switch for the cooling fan if so where would I find it ?
-
Its a switch normally on the rad near the fan on the bigger engines
-
Is that the one half way down the rad with on the battery/passenger side?
-
Swapped it with the one off my 1.6 driver that know works but the fan still doesn't come on any ideas?
-
Start checking the wires and plugs back from the fan and switch.
Helps if you have a meter
-
Okay thanks will try that when I next get chance

The fan shouldn't come on until the engine is well above normal operating temperature. Are you sure it's getting hot enough that the fan should be operating? Somewhere between 2/3 and 3/4 on the gauge?
-
Mine tends to come on a little past half way. Still, it rarely comes on, only when I have been sat in heavy traffic.
-
Take the plug of the rad temp sender and bridge the connectors. If it comes on then it's the sensor, if it doesn't then it's the wiring somewhere.

Thanks for the help not had chance to have a look at it yet been to busy with work should be able to get a chance to have a look tomorrow. I have let it get to 3/4 on the temperature gauge before and nothing happened.

Fuse?

In that case, I'd say reply #4 is applicable.
There's a two-way power connector on the way to the thermoswitch, a non-waterproof connector. This is what mine looked like when I tried to unplug it to check the connections were clean:

That was actually still working, somehow, but it must have been close to losing connectivity for ever.

A dodgy cap on the reservoir can cause this, as the system won't pressurize properly. My old car boiled over before the fan came on due to the cap being duff.
