Title: Low Life Scum...
Post by: Buck on 10 February 2015, 20:41
<rant>

Came out of work tonight to find my passenger window smashed and my car without its RNS510.   cables hanging out the window

Broken my window trim and at the minute glass everywhere whilst I wait for the police to come out to me.

Whilst I was looking at my car a bloke came up and said he'd seen a couple of lads hanging around my car.

I'm going to ring the insurance co. soon but at the moment I'm thinking I don't want them to replace the stereo as the thieving scum shots will just come back for it.

pi55ed off doesn't cover it

That's crap news, thieving little b*****ds.

It's a tough decision about replacing the stereo.  On the one hand you are risking them coming back for the replacement, but on the other, why should you change how you live just because of some scumbags.

If you do replace it, is there anywhere else you can park it for a while?  Also any cctv covering it?

Sorry to hear about that chap - some people are just scumbags. Hope you manage to get her back to how she was before without too much effort and money :(

Thanks both

Just got off the phone to the insurance / glass people.

Luckily the car is tucked away in the garage tonight and waiting for new glass in the morning.

Hopefully they've not marked the bodywork and it's just the black gloss trim that is damaged and they've not bent the door.

Sorry to hear this Buck...wayne kerrs!

There was a spate of this a couple of years ago...

Whereabouts was it parked when this happened?

Happens a lot that's why I have not upgraded to the rns510 dab, was thinking of going kenwood or pioneer route, a lot cheaper and you can take the front off, maybe an idea!

Had mine taken a year ago in a cinema car park at half 3 in the afternoon. Old lady saw it, they had it out in less than 2 mins.

I decided not to replace as it will only get knicked again. I havent missed it too much. You just cant have owt nice.

Cheers guys

Feeling a bit calmer now.

Police want to finger print car tomorrow so will drive to work with no glass in  as they don't want me to touch anything. Window guys coming out to work first thing too.

Door has scratches / marks on it from where the scum has lent in rubbed broken glass into the paintwork.   I'll need to give it a wash then assess. Black car with gravel rash on the top of the door is not a good look.

I'm sure I'll find lots of bits of glass for weeks to come.

Worst thing is that it was outside work so can't really park elsewhere. I'll see what the insurance company say - might just put the RCD310 back in. Will miss the unit if I do though and half of me is thinking the b4stards will have won. Have had the thought of changing the car to get one with a truly integrated stereo (I'll see sense soon!)

Could be worse - no one hurt.

One question, when the sh1ts plug it in will it have my details in it as in SatNav recent destinations and phone numbers?  (I didn't save my home address in the Sat Nav)

Scum of the earth!
You could have the side windows covered in that security film.It keeps the glass in place if a window break is attempted. The doors already will be deadlocked so they shouldn't be able to get in that way.
I don't think it is that expensive either.

Basstards   I often worry about mine considering how easy they are to take out.

Your nav destinations will still be in it, but not your phone numbers. The bluetooth module is separate.

As you retro fitted it, will your insurers replace it, or will they try to fob you off with an RCD310 as that's what will tally with the chassis number?

Had a chilly drive to work this AM.

AA Autoshield have advised that the glass needs to be ordered and won't be fitted until Friday so they are coming later to do a temporary repair!

@dubber36 - not sure re insurance as yet.  I still have my original stereo so that can go back in but not sure how they will play it with a replacement. I'm guessing I'm not going ot come out of this a winner for sure!

At the minute my decision is that I won't put another RNS510 back in as they are just too easy to steal and whilst I've had nearly 5 years of no issues with it, now it's happened I'll be worrying about it happening again especially as it happened whilst parked outside work.  If it was in some "random" street, that's different.

Sorry to hear mate!

The exact same thing happened to one of my mates last year. Brand new golf GTI ed 35 and within a month of ownership had his RNS510 stolen! I was thankful because I was parked only a few spaces down. They mustve known mine was a kenwood and decided not to touch it.

Unfortunately there will always be scum who have no regard for any other human lives other than their own. Hope they get caught!

Have a look at Eonon GM 5152 which looks exactly like the RNS, or a GM 5153 if you fancy a larger screen. I always fancied one myself because they support airplay or phone mirroring. That way I can just sit in the car watching youtube videos on big screen whilst I wait for the other half.

Best wishes mate

How much does that cost roughly?
Title: Re: Low Life Scum...
Post by: Snoopy on 11 February 2015, 15:48
About £300 depends how much of the stip down you do for them as they have to remove the windows to fit it. So its mostly labour costs.

I am sorry to hear that, that really sucks. They are just too easy to remove, I only ever remember seeing one other post about this in the past few years.

Thanks for the comments guys.  I think the shock/.anger is wearing off a little. Only a little.

The police officer that came out today also recommended security film but also cautioned that he had seen many VW/Seat/Skoda vehicles suffer the same fate and said he'd had a few where they came back if not successful after attempt one or once the insurance had paid for a shiny new replacement.

The original RCD310 is going back in next week when I have time to sort the mess.

I've yet to decide what to do re the insurance.  So far it will cost me £70 window excess and £42 for the two parts (window trim and stereo trim) as I can't yet see any damage to the wiring loom etc. I think the scratches to the paintwork don't justify a respray so will just have to live with those :(

The dashboard marks where they have used a screwdriver should be covered up with the trim piece.

The cost of the RNS510 from a dealer is £2447 inc VAT!!

Insurance company have asked if I want to submit a claim but as yet not sure as they limit audio to £1000 on what they will pay for. I don't want them to pay towards an RNS510 that I won't fit and them only pay me out if I produce an invoice for it! Plus I need to think of the potential impact to my no-claims bonus etc. even though it is protected.

Hoping to ring my broker tomorrow to discuss / get advice.

I suppose if they replace it you could sell it if you didn't want it anymore, I have just listed my DAB version that I pulled from my GTD before I traded it in on ebay for £700 (fingers crossed some seem to be listed for more).

Good point - will wait and see what their "offer" is then look at it from a head rather than heart view.

Makes the Mk7 seem more attractive now particularly with it's seemingly hard coded units....

At £2447 its no wonder they are being stolen, typical mark up from VAG though.

New window installed yesterday - excellent job and the guy from AA Autoshield was excellent! Feel so much better that the car is now properly watertight and more secure.

Just been down to VW this morning to order the black gloss window trim - will be here Tuesday.

I also installed the old RCD310 stereo back into the car - not a patch on the RNS510 but hey ho!

Not very funny if you forget to turn it off before you touch it either ... maybe just the car battery ...

The police updated me on Friday after speaking to a witness and they believe the thieves are local from the estate near work so they most likely will be back and if I replace, they will have another go  so it makes no sense to put another RNS510 unit in as I cannot secure my car from attempted/actual theft.

I also spoke to the insurance company on Friday.  If I don't claim then they have confirmed it will have no impact on my policy at renewal even though it was a theft. This leaves me £92 out of pocket and minus the RNS510. (£70 excess for window and £22 for new window B Pillar trim on order)

If I claim then I'll claim for the above as well as the stereo surround bevel which they broke the clips off (I have done a temporary repair at the moment)

However, the insurance policy has a limit of £1000 on audio (worth checking yours) so it won't pay for a new one sourced from VW but I have found a company that sells these for £749 delivered. http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/volkswagen-rns-510-navigation

I wondered whether to claim for this plus the other bits and then look to move the RNS510 on? Should get around £500 for this?

After my excess of £100 I'd have around £500 in my pocket to do what I wanted.  I thought about getting a Fiscon bluetooth unit http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/bluetooth/fiscon-vw-basic (http://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/bluetooth/fiscon-vw-basic) which will work with my RCD310 head unit as it uses the MFD to operate.  This will be out of sight and give me telephone use when driving which is a big convenience for me.

Any Thoughts? You can probably tell that I haven't made my mind up yet?

edit: Price of RNS510 is £749 not £799

These petty criminals do my bloody head in.  Why surrender to their "wishes" by putting a lesser head unit in your car that you're not personally happy with?

If you want another RNS-510 then put another one in.  You've worked for it.

The police should be doing their job and trying to catch these people.

Is there anywhere you can park with CCTV?

Well, I have finally had my insurance claim settled

My head has won over my heart and I won't be putting another 510 in. Everyone I have spoken to i.e. police; SOCO; window Repair guy ++ have all said they've been involved in multiple instances of where the scumbags come back weeks/months later and take the replacement.

As it was at work I can't exactly avoid the risk and the CCTV doesn't prove an effective deterrent.

I don't want the the stress, hassle or financial impact so I'm just going to have to wait for my next car to get sat Nav built in again

In the meantime, I'm enjoying sat Nav via the new "Here" mapping which works off line and to be fair is pretty good

Glad it finally sorted Buck.  Not replacing is probably a wise move if there's a good chance they'll return and do it again.

Thanks Rebecca

Yes, a sad state of affairs but no point putting me/the car at risk.

Might give me an excuse to move into a Mk7 sooner rather than later  (not sure that'd go down well with the boss though :))
