Title: MOT and tyres
Post by: bobbarley on 07 February 2015, 10:43
I've just noticed one of my tyres is probably below the minimum, and have my MOT come up this Thursday! Could I just put the spare on there instead, and then get the tyre sorted afterwards. Or do they check the boot for spares these days?

If you have a full size spare put that on instead, spare is not MOT relevant (tester might have a look at it and tell you it's not legal but can't fail car for it).
Don't think you can go to MOT with space saver wheel.

PS: I would always change both tyres at the same time unless the other one is almost new.

Good stuff, thought so. I'll pop the full size spare on. Front left is completely worn down but front right is ok. This worries me as there's obviously a problem, despite the fact the wheels were aligned just 12 months ago.

How much difference is between the left and right tyre? Wouldn't worry too much unless there is a massive difference. Did you put both fronts on at the same time (new), are they the same brand and model?

I had a Pirelli and a Dunlop on at the same time (lease company.....) the Pirelli wore much faster. But that's just because it's much softer (got 15k from 2 Dunlops on front instead of 25k on Pirellis).

Identical tyres both fitted together.  One totally gone, other has like 4mm left on it.

Just ordered 2 Dunlop Sport Bluresponse, great reviews so worth a try.

You must be going very fast through right hand bends

Rears wearing equally?

Yeah rears both look like new.

Brakes sticking on left, right wheel not getting power, suspension faulty..... would be the first things I'd check.
If it had wheel alignment and wear across the tyre is equal then it's gonna be one of those three things.

Hopefully the garage will be able to shed some light on it during the MOT.

Bought two new front tyres.  Car "just" passed, with 13 advisories  :undecided:

13 advisories??? How many pages is that?

I thought mine was bad when it had 3

Went onto two pages.  Ones of attention include:

Offshore front shock knackered
Nearside control arm has excessive play
Front discs are warped
Both rear tyres have nails in, one has side wall damage.

Since getting it from the garage the clutch has also started to go, revving like crazy after 3,000rpm.  I did however put some part worn tyres onto the back for £30.

Other problems not picked up in the MOT.

Both front door modules are broken
Driver side window is broken
Glovebox is broken
Drivers heated seat is broken

I estimate there's over £1,000 of work needs doing on it.

All in all it's too much for me too fix, it's too much money.  Will be getting something else this year and breaking the Golf for parts
