Title: Recent GTi / GTD Discounts
Post by: drisser on 03 February 2015, 15:18
Hi guys

keen to know what sort of discounts dealers are offering direct on current orders ?

I ordered a Mk7 over a year ago then had to cancel but am pondering re-ordering again.  My local dealer who I like a lot, offered about 8% discount then, currently offering same deal plus the £750 deposit contribution on a GTi.

I suspect there is more to be had and was thinking to be pushing for at least 10% ?  Any recent orders confirm that is a minimum target to aim for ?

cheers
Andy

If you've nowt to px then take a look at what the brokers (Orangewheels etc) are offering. I got 12% off an R in Sept as well as a fair px price for my GTD (getting fairer every week as the car looks to be getting built 12 weeks after originally planned).

Welcome back from the dark side Andy

I'm sure you could easily get between 10% - 12% mate so keep pushing

Yeah defo, I found the cheapest local dealer through carwow.com (as I wanted a local pickup), and got 11% after a bit of haggling using the drivethedeal.com price (12%).

12% is certainly the norm for a broker purchase - if you can negotiate that direct with a dealer plus obtain a good trade-in price for your exisiting car like Monkeyhanger has done then you will be doing very well indeed!

Carwow is a good place to start as its dealers as opposed to brokers.

I got a deal that my local AD matched (~12%) with the finance contribution on top.

Not tried Carnow myself - although to be fair a broker just introduces you to a dealer too. All the cars come from a dealer - the broker or carnow or whoever are simply an introduction agency.

Do you know who is providing you with the prices with Carnow before you commit to an offer? - you don't know which dealer say 'Drivethedeal' will use (well most people do know but its not officially stated).

The individual vw dealers respond to your spec on car wow, that way you know all dealers can effectively do the car at the best price you get.

Will dealers do deals on the gtd estate? Or will it be best to wait a few months?

Don't see why not. They did immediate discounts on the GTI/GTD to generate interest and imagine they would do the same with the estate

Chris: I'd wait until the brokers are advertising deals before going to see Mick (or someone else) and using those figures as leverage. We should've done that first time around, might've gotten a bit more off the GTDs.

For my recently ordered R, I got quotes from Carwow, Orangewheels and Drivethedeal.  DTD best @ 12%, followed closely by OW. Got about 6 dealers contact through Carwow but discount varied greatly and most quite a way off the DTD offer, ordered last week via DTD and (following a recommendation from a forum member) requested a dealer fairly local to me, JCB Medway.  They were happy to oblige, so order placed, painless

If you want to go to your local dealer, get broker quotes, take the best one along with you to wave in their face.

I wouldn't be pulled in by that £750 deposit contribution only available Solutions, it might be cheaper with HP. No such thing as a free lunch but i don't know your situation but as always DYOR

Would have thought they would very keen - Golf estates have never been popular in the UK....

Although I got a better deal using DriveTheDeal I was impressed with carwow.

You just put the details of the car you are interested in and then 5 or 6 dealers reply with prices. Its anonymous in that the dealers don't get your email address or any details. You get a notification from carwow stating you have a reply and you just log in.
What I liked was you could then negotiate with them whereas with the brokers the price you are given is final. I got a couple of the carwow dealers to come down in price almost to what drivethedeal were doing it for but not quite.

+1 I had exactly the same experience.

So you have five dealers to deal with - you then presumably negotiate with several of them only to find that the final price is still more than the one it took two minutes to get on Drivethedeal?

I will be sticking with DtD for my next car purchase :-)

Yes you receive quotes from 5 or so local dealers and have the opportunity to discuss the offers with a human beforehand to check car availability, delivery dates etc Whereas dtd is a website and until you take the leap of faith you don't know how it will work out or where the dealer is located. Even though I took the leap and went with dtd I can see why Car wow will suit a lot of people.

I bought through DTD tried carwow and go to 10% with a dealer in Exter, DTD was just over 12% . Had to travel 300 miles to Medway from Cornwall but they fill the car with fuel so cost me a train fare. Did try to get a few freebies but got blanked. Sir was being a bit greedy

As there was a strong chance of me getting JCB Medway, and the max discount, going with DTD was a no brainer for me.  When I spoke with them on the phone to request JCB, they were very accomodating.  However it was worth getting the carwow and orangewheels quotes to compare even though I never bothered getting into negotiations with them.

More or less    But it depends on your definition of "deal with".
Its not like in a car showroom where they um and ah and see their boss every five minutes to see if they can get you a once only deal of a lifetime that you have to accept before the sun goes down
Its a simple line of text at your convenience.

When you are having to travel almost 450 miles to collect your car from the DTD dealer, it made sense for me to use carwow as they gave me 2 dealers very close but unfortunately it was the other 3 from down south that I managed to negotiate a better deal with. Even if the 2 up my neck of the woods had come close by a few £££ I would have taken them to save on the inconvenience.

DTD is a good no nonsense service that I would recommend but nothing beats a bit of interaction. Plus carwow will also accept a trade in.

Thanks for explaining your decision... easier for me I guess as the dealer DtD use is around an hour away.

A broker is ideal if you have an older car you're selling privately or coming off a lease or PCP and walking away.
Order online, get on a train or plane and collect.

If you've got a newer car then some sort of interaction is ideal so you can get a part ex price and then can start ignoring the headline discount and look more at the real £££ terms of the price to change.

Each have their merits!

I normal sell my car to another main dealer.  I look after them and they are usually less than two years old and high spec - I have always got good offers.

You find dealers give you decent cash offers?
I generally get "it's a bit new really so we can't offer you what we think it's worth as we can buy them in direct from vw much cheaper..."

I spent about £250 more by using carwow over DTD (maybe a few quid more once I added more options!) But I chose it for some of the above reasons.

I wanted a local dealer (can see why dtd is good for you Mark) as it gave me some reassurance for everything going smoothly.

The salesperson on carwow had 50+ great reviews and he lived up to it! He replied to my many emails through the process straight away. He also offered to give me a lift on collection day even though it was a big trip from his home. He was definitely one of the good guys, and although I'm sure the DTD dealers have got the process nice and slick - it was nice getting to pop in and meet the guy a couple of times.

The other factor for me was my dealer placed the order the day after I ordered, whereas (at the time) DTD had a couple of weeks wait to fill an order slot.

If carwow had been much more (or not local) I would have gladly used DTD, but it can be a nice alternative and I would use them again.

Carwow sent me a £20 Amazon voucher for leaving a review too, so that topped of the experience nicely!

Yes - if you take the correct approach. have the car superbly presented and take it to them on a dry day so they can appraise it. Dealers need good stock and it does not necc all come from VW. Good stock is good stock - and if your car is the right colour, in top condition with a few options on it, it will sell. If it sells they will buy it.

Yes, I pretty much find that too. No dealer is going to give you more than 85% of the sticker price they would apply to it, unless they know for sure they have a buyer lined up that wants your car, with no waiting around. They're going to want £3k minimum out of it to make it worth their while selling. They're taking a risk too - a 2/3 year old GTD/GTI will be depreciating £200/250 a month on their forecourt while it is unsold.

P/X offers seem to be generally £4k less than what they want to sell it at. If you can split the difference privately for £2k less than the dealership then it might be worth your while to potentially be car-less for a short while.

They do still have a dealer in the north, they mentioned this when I spoke to them a couple weeks back.

I am comparing what I would look to get in a private sale to a dealer purchase offer (what the dealer sells it for does not really concern me). I have found its pretty much the same as a realistic private sale price and has no finance settlement hassle attached to it.

Maybe I have been lucky in offering them nice spec cars in the right colour etc (the VW stock ones tend to not have any more than one option on them)....

My last Scirocco was offered to three dealers - one was not interested (I presume they a;ready had plenty in stock), one gave me an OK offer which i was about to take until the third popped up with a great offer (the last dealer was the one who had carried out he service on the car but not supplied it). I did not even offer it to the dealer that sold it to me in the first place!
