Is there anyway to default the start/stop system to off and then press the button to enable it if you want to. I have VCDS.
-
Nope, there only VCDS tweak that is known is to permanently disable the stop start by tricking the car into thinking the parameters are wrong.
-
Don't you just press the button with the A off button to the left of the gear stick? Or am I not understanding the question properly

That only temporarily disables it. Next time you get in the car it resets so the Stop/Start is active.
I used to like the Stop/Start but the last couple of weeks I have found myself switching it off. Don't really know why!

Mine hardly ever kicks in nowadays. It appears to be very temperamental

In the colder months when you have your heating on - anything more than 16C and 2 bars of fan speed seems to knock mine off when the engine is warm.

Today 0 degrees outside reversed our of the garage put it in park + hand brake it stopped the engine. Whilst I closed the garage door. Not good.

Why is that not good?
-
That's normal. Mine works in minus conditions. Is it not as long as the battery has the power in it?
-
Seems normal to me too - the only issue I have with it is that it will kick in when the engine is cold and I don't like the idea of stopping and starting an engine soon after initial switch on so I disable it until its warmed up.
-
That doesn't sound right. There are many conditions under which the Start/Stop works or not.
The best way to check if/why the Start/Stop is available or not is to press the Car button on the infotainment unit then go to Vehicle Status and then touch the Start/Stop option on the screen. There should be a list of conditions displayed if the Start/Stop is not available such as: engine working temperature not reached yet, battery charge incomplete, climate control working/inside temperature, etc. If all conditions are met, then the message "Start/Stop is available" will be displayed.
The above I have noticed on my GTI over a couple of days of monitoring the system and how it works.

I agree I just don't think that its good for the engine or the battery to start so soon and then restart. I am not saying I do not want to use it ever, just not right at the start or the end of my journey.
-
Easy to fix that, just push the Stop/Start off button as soon as you've started up for the first time so it doesn't cut out while its warming up.
I often do that, and re-enable it when the oil temp is at its normal operating level.

I looked for a way of disabling it in VCDS on my Passat, but had no luck.
After a few weeks of driving the car I learned to come off the brake pedal the instant Auto Hold took over, so the engine doesn't stop. It's all about being light on the brake pedal and easing off just enough so that you don't get the 'bob' when the car comes to rest, but having enough pressure for the Auto Hold to take over.
It's only occasionally that the engine stops and that's embarrassingly when I'm parking. Holding the footbrake when going from D to R it stops, then starts up again when I tap the come off the brake pedal, making it look as if I've stalled.
Stick with it and you'll develop your own drive around without having to resort to pressing the button.
-
Try this if you have VCDS - apparently does not work on all cars
Permanently Disable Start-Stop
Available with VCP (Vag Can Pro) as an OCF (One Click Function)
Tested by antera on 2014.5MY cars and works with VCDS as below
· Go to Module 19 (Can Gateway)
· Adaption
· Go to Kanaal: Start_stop_voltage_limit
· change to 12.1V ( standard is 7.6V)
The Start-Stop will show as disabled because the energy requirement from the car is too high, which is not an error but a valid reason for SS to be disabled.
-
I don't know why your cars behave like this with regards to the Start/Stop but my car cuts out even with the Auto Hold engaged. The brake lights will stay on and all the other consumers such as headlights, wipers, infotainment, etc will still work. The only thing that stops working is the servo on the steering.
What i have noticed strange though is if you are at a traffic light, start/stop engaged and you use the wipers and press the clutch at the same time, while the engine resumes, the wipers will stop in the up position for a second. I'm guessing it cuts out power to them when the engine re-starts.

The brake lights will stay on...
This would annoy me almost as much as the driver behind me. At least with my B7 DSG Passat, when I come off the brake pedal, the brake lights go off. If I'm at the back of the queue I want my brake lights on, but as soon as someone is behind me, I'd like them to be off. Just like rear fog lights, but that's for another ranting thread.
-
Does auto hold really keep the brake lights illuminated, so much to learn about this car.

Its not a fix, more of a compromise, but if you pull up on the handbrake button, ie. turning your P to red from green, it turns the lights off. I often forget to do it but if in long stationary traffic i do it out of courtesy of the bloke behind me.

More interesting info, I find the manual for the mk7 shocking really.
I don't want to fully disable the auto start/stop it has its uses, just not on my 5 mile commute at the very start and the very end especially in this cold weather.
-
I don't understand your concern over the stop/start cutting in at the end of your journey - presumably the engine has warmed up then - the lights and heater etc will carry on working if the cars computer deems the battery strength can cope.
-
It cutting out while parking. its just a waste of energy, drains the battery which then requires charging.

If you're concerned its easy... before parking, press the button... at least that's what I do...
The car will not use stop/start if it thinks that the drain on the battery is too great. They are designed to do this...
-
I guess he was referring to the fact that the battery drains some current when the engine resumes and if parking, obviously you'll stop the engine in under a minute when you've finished parking which doesn't give time for the battery to completely charge. The current drained to resume the car is nothing compared to when starting the engine in the morning when it's cold so not really a concern, unless you've got problems with the alternator.
What I don't get is how the car stops the engine while parking? In my view, the car is always in first gear or reverse when parking which means that the start/stop doesn't kick in. In order for the car to stop the engine one must leave the car in neutral and release the clutch which I don't see the point, unless you've finished parking.
-
I don't really understand the problem here, maybe its a DSG thing.
On my manual GTD the only time auto start-stop *might* engage is when the car is out of gear in neutral and the clutch is not depressed, nor any weight on the throttle.
(The *might* there is to cover all of the conditions that it doesn't kick in (which seems to be mainly air-con related - if its heating or cooling then the engine runs))
Prior to this car, I never used to knock it out of gear at traffic lights and unless on a steep hill I'd not even apply the handbrake, just hold it on the clutch. I've learnt over the last 9 months to trust auto-hold and to let auto SS do its stuff.
Its never cut in when I've not expected it... what are you doing?
-
It is a DSG thing. It stops the engine every time you come to a stop if you stay on the brake pedal for too long.
-
Defo different than the manual. It cuts out in D with your foot on the brakes.

Is that not maybe the problem "too long".
I thought the DSG was set up to not kick in straight away as it waits momentarily to see if R is engaged and if it is then Stop Start is disabled?
It certainly seemed to be that way on a recent A3 I had for a couple of days.
-
The reason you can't disable it permanently is the cars tax band is given because it has stop/start. If you do disable it permanently, strictly speaking it should be put in a higher tax band.
On the DSG you can control it by the firmness on the brake pedal when at a full stop. Press down harder and the engine will stop or just take your foot off the pedal if you want the engine to continue to run.
As for the brake lights, if you want them to go off when auto hold is on just pull the hand brake switch up and the lights go out. Just remember to allow the brake to disengage before pulling off.
