What difference should I expect from a k&n or pipercross panel filter? I have a 1.8 Mk4 GTI Golf Non-turbo (AGN Engine code)

Just means you can wash it out every 6 months and never need to buy a new one.
On a standard N/A car a high flow filter will get you half a horse if you are lucky.
Best off modding the intake, porting the TB and intkae joins and adding a cold feed, then sticking in a high flow filter for maybe 3bhp.
Best buy a load of GolfGTI stickers as they have a better horsepower to cash ration

And if go down that route make sure the "I" in GTI is red as
ive been told it means an extra 5bhp  :lipsrsealed:

As the others have said it will save you buying a paper filter every year but no gains to be had at all
