Title: the wife's Polo up in smoke - oil pump failure??
Post by: candywhite12 on 31 January 2015, 09:49
 my wife's Polo (2008 model, 1.4L petrol) went up in smoke, literally.  I was driving down the motorway at about 80 mph, then all of a sudden a loud bang from the engine compartment and smoke everywhere.  The oil sign came on the dashboard and the car simply died... I opened the bonnet, there was oil everywhere in the engine compartment.

sent the car to a garage which only opens Monday

Anyone has any idea what it might be? Anyone knows the cost of replacing an oil pump (if that's the problem)

thanks

It's thrown a rod through the crankcase I think.

That could have been caused by an oil pump failure initially, but oil and smoke outside the engine isn't right for an oil pump failure. All those bits are inside the engine.

Could be something daft like oil pipe to turbo 'exploding' (if it's a turbo?), or oil filter housing cracking open....
worst case would be that something in the engine gave and as bandit mentioned has come through the crankcase...

Difficult to give a remote diagnosis.... though since it just completely died it's more likely something more serious (e.g. cracked oil filter housing would not stop engine - not immediately anyway).

Did you take any photos?

no photos taken since i had the 2 little ones with me at the time and was in no mood for taking photos  btw about a month ago the car was left overnight with water all the way up to its grill badge as the rescue lines were unable to drive through the flooded area.  the mechanic could not diagnose any faults at the time but said that any residues of water in the engine could cause faults in the next 2-3K miles, guess what its the next 2k miles... wonder it the 2 relate.  anyways i'll b hearing from the garage on Monday hopefully i wont have to shell out a fortune for this

so a new engine then... has anyone had any experience with replacing their engine?  the mechanic has not given me a quote yet as he has to find an engine first  (1.4L, 16V, polo is 2008)
