Title: New downpipe - to heat wrap or not?
Post by: markos on 29 January 2015, 09:08
hi everyone,

so, finally decided to upgrade the downpipe and after some good recommendations have chosen this system from PVS

http://www.powervalve.co.uk/products/vw/golf/mk5/golf-mk5-gti-edition-30-2004-2007/vw119-downpipe-with-200-cell-motorsport-cat-and-link-pipe-to-fit-oem-system-with-heat-wrap-system-options-sports-system.html

so, my options are to heat wrap and also to add power flex. i've heard mixed pros and cons for getting these extras done and wondered if anyone has any mk5 gti specific advice on to what's required.

also, it's been mentioned that i'll need to get my R-Tech stage 1 remap tweaked to suit the new exhaust

I have never wrapped a road car exhaust system, but on my previous race cars i wrapped the manifolds and down pipe it helps with keeping the heat in, and also increases exhaust gas flow speed due to higher temps. But you will also find higher corrosion speed due to trapped moisture weird as it sounds ! I had problems first hand with this, also can cause cracking if the material isn't up to the job. Personally i wouldn't bother especially if only the downpipe.

thanks! that's what i thought, not really worth it for a road car... plus it saves me a bit of cash!

just chatted with a guy from powervalve by the way, and i must say he was extremely nice to chat with and went through my options clearly... so far, so good!
