Title: differences in mk 4 engines
Post by: supra_ash on 28 January 2015, 15:36
its been awhile but if i remember correctly mk4's have an AUM and an AGU ?
ive tried the search but cant seem to find what the differences are.

am i right in thinking the AUM has the ko3s turbo and the AGU have the ko3?

im looking to buy a mk4 but i need to make sure i buy whats right for me.
do they have the same internals ect... ?
looking for whats the best to mod for more power

ahh re-read it and reply#8 gives me what i need to know
the agu is the one to go for when wanting higher power due to internals.
with an agu fitting a ko4 and bigger injectors ect.. can the stock ecu be mapped for this or would it need a standalone or piggyback ecu?

it can be mapped on its own ecu

big power can still be had from the AUM so don't let the extra 1mm size on the wrist pins and bigger ports sway your judgment (as that essentially is the only difference on the engines)

To hijack this thread and make it useful... Whas the difference between standalone ecu? Whats that mean?

An aftermarket ecu which replaces the standard ecu entirely. Piggyback ecu works as an addon to the standard ecu.

as above,
the reason i asked is that with a supra you need a standalone or a piggyback ecu, you cant just map the stock ecu for your upgrades.
good to know the golf's ecu is fine :)

I can confirm this, currently running 492bhp on low boost on an AUM with standard inlet manifold and head

Should of said I do just mean the small port head is fine, bottom end need some work, particularly the rods, but that applies for all 1.8t engine codes running circa 300ft-lb or more
