Title: is this normal ?
Post by: stevejones on 22 January 2015, 13:18
hi all

I have owned a 55 plate golf for a few weeks .

when I turn the key on the ignition into the position just before the engine starts , I get a low noise under the dashboard , just above the radio , the noise sounds like a blender or something whizzing around but it's not very load . it also happens immediately when I start the car . the noise only lasts for about 2-3 seconds.

is this normal, I just haven't noticed it before .

many thanks for reading

Hi there,

Are you sure its not the headunit? I know that in my mk3 when I start that the fan in the headunit makes a fair amount of noise haha

have you also rules out that its the fans? does it only make the noise at certain times?

hi n900

by headunit you mean the radio etc ?

it may well be that . it's not the fans for sure .

it only happens when I turn the key into the second position. and then again immediately once I start the car . the noise only lasts around 2 seconds

thanks for the reply btw

Could be the high pressure fuel pump priming up, which is perfectly normal. It's located in the engine bay but in line with where you're saying the noise comes from.

yeah get a mate to turn it on while you have your head near the engine, iirc the high pressure pump is on the front right of the engine as you look at it.

That's exactly where it is. You'll also hear other things priming up, high pitched noises and a few thinks make other odd noises but these are all pre-ignition checks and preparations hat the engine does.
