Hi guys please firstly accept my apologises for the length of this post but I am considering something extremely serious.
I have owned and loved my R32 (MK4) for some time but my baby is almost here, I want something that cheaper to run and slightly bigger/more modern.
I have posted the below "swap wanted" add on most of the facebook groups I am aware of but I really am going to take my time looking for a Mk5 as I am in no rush, which brings me here, I would like to know what I should be looking for when thinking/considering a MK5, i.e. what are the common faults, what should of been already done, don't get one with a sunroof because.. etc etc?
In terms of what my plans for the car will be, I wont be looking to mod it, slap it on Air or anything, I would like to keep any spare money to save for my little bundle of joy's future and keep the Mk5 in as standard state as possible.
I really look after my cars, and want a Mk5 that's been loved like my R.
I know I am being fussy with the spec I am after but fact is, im willing to wait because I will only replace my R for the spec im after.
please see the wanted post below
Looking to swap this Mk4 R32. For a Mk5 GTI or maybe an Edition 30.
Must have the following specs.
*Curse control.
*Leathers.
*Bi-Xeons
*90K miles maximum and full service history.
*Colour - any but silver.
*6 months + MOT.
*Reg - 2006+
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
More info on my R will be provided on request but below i have listed the normal questions.
*Black pearlescent R32 one of 755 made in this colour of which I am lead to believe only 10% were 5 door.
*10 months MOT.
*91k but is used daily.
*53 plate.
*Location - South Wales.
*Full service history including 95% of which is VW or VW specialist. Last service was May 2014 which was a full major service at Euro Performance including heldex system and gear box oil, power steering fluid and brake fluid changed for good measure along with a 3 page car inspection. Next service due in May and all it will need is oil and oil filter.
*Full heated Konig leathers.
*Cruse control.
*Tyres - Michelin super sport 3's all round of which both fronts were replaced at the service in May. rears have around 4mm left.
*Auto wipers.
*Auto rearview dimming mirror.
*Lastest ECU software loaded in from VW on recall.
*Coil packs replaced on recall.
The car is in completely standard form apart from the following.
*Curpa R front splitter.
*Audi R8 Oil cap.
*Pipercross panel filter.
*Porshce coolent cap. (I have also replaced the coolent tank because the old one was brown)
*Miles to empty.
*Lit needles.
*Auto anti hijack.
*German alarm cherp.
*Alarm lock beep.
The car is straight and true, never been in a crash and have full documented HPI to prove.
I have owned this car since May 2014 on 87k and I have spent a fortune restoring this car to the standard you see today. Including new R mats.
The only reason for the sale is I want to have a slightly more modern car thats cheaper to run but i am afterall a VW enthusiast and always had a soft spot for the MK5.
This car is washed weekly and detailed whenever i get the chance. It has had season treatments of wax (collinite) to protect the paintwork and its also snowfoamed weekly.
Thanks for reading and I am awaiting your comments/help :)

First thing is service history and cam belt changes (normal practise). On the mk5 GTI, things to consider;
PCV & DV;

HPFP Cam Follower

Also check to see if the car is due any recalls, only one I'm aware of is for coil packs.
If you're looking for good specs, you'd be best off getting a later model (2007 - 2008) as they came with many upgraded bits and pieces which will hopefully work better and last.

Thanks for the info, what are the cambelt/water pump intervals?

pretty sure its 60k or 4 year same as mk4 1.8t but rust will be something else to look for around arches and tailgate
-
Thank Barry

I've got mine for sale on here.
-
He's right, it's 60K miles or 5 years, whichever is sooner. As for the front wing rust, later cars seem to not be affected by this issue (2007 onwards) so another reason to look at later models.

I've got mine for sale on here.
Just had a look bud must say very smart. And looks stunning
Only things that put me off it are:
* you have owned it less than a month and now your selling it.? :undecided:
* older than i wanted.
* no xeons.
* has DSG abd would prefer manual.
* has higher mileage than i wanted.

No worries Mate, I'm only selling it as i want a Mercedes C220 CDI and cannot justify selling my stage 2 Mapped S3, So unfortunately the Golf has to go.
Hope you find the car in the spec you looking for. All the best
-
Fair enough. Real shame. Lovely car, in all fairness, if it was Manual i could of prob lived with the rest.
-
hi all,
im looking into the market for one of these as well.
for me its a upgrade from my mk4 platform but i'm not only looking into maintaining a mk5 i also want to see what common faults are relevant to to this model. not really in it for modding anymore but we all know that doesnt last long
so if anyone might be able to provide details on the common issues associated then that would be great.
already aware that 2007 onwards is better but further info would be nice
thanks fellas

I wouldn't say it's overpriced mate heavy spec and 1 owner with full history check the water and belts has been done mate and maybe see if he will come down a bit
-
Yeah it would of needed two belts and two water pumps right?

In my view I'd say it is over priced. Fair enough its got low miles and 1 previous owner. Tbh I wouldn't look at that for instance. You would think 1 owner car would be mint?, Look at the front alloy wheel. It's curbed so badly. Anyhow how is it a "Heavy Spec". It's only got reverse parking sensors and thats it.
It dont have, Cruise Control, It's got mid line Display, No headlamp washer jets, No MFSW, No Paddles for DSG, No SatNav, And look at the centre console. It's basic with rear cup holder.
-
Yeah tbh i agree with you. I rang them and they told me they were selling it right then. Yet its still on autotrader and there site 3 days later... Oh and they promised to call me back with a value for my car, never did.
-
Think they were banking on it being DSG and a more uncommon colour to bring in the premium. I still would love to have your R32, it looks lovely!

fair points however the car could still be mint even thought the alloys are kerbed some folk are sh!t at parking haha

It's worth remembering the cruise control is a relatively easy retrofit so that shouldn't sway your decision too much.
