Title: Windscreen replacement at less than 5k miles - GUTTED
Post by: GeoBog on 20 January 2015, 18:26
Got a nasty stone chip on my windscreen last week which resulted in a small star-like crack of about 10 mm. The guy from the glass company tried to fill it today with that special resin to repair it but the crack was quite deep and has expanded to about 25 mm. Now I need a new windscreen at 4980 miles on the clock and 7 months of ownership.

The OEM windscreen seems to be Pilkington but the other windows are Saint Gobain. I always thought that all the windows on a car come from the same manufacturer. The replacement windscreen is going to be Pilkington as well, but without the VW badge on it which doesn't bother me to much.

Anyone had experiences with windscreen replacement? Had my old car for 8 years but never had a screen chip or replacement.

Make sure the proposed non-OEM windscreen has the same tint level and colour as the front door windows (green tint 15% I believe), and that your suoundaktor and auto-dimming rear-view mirrors are operating properly post-fit.

I had the same problem. Had my GTI 5 months and got a massive crack across the drivers window. Had mine replaced by auto glass and everything works fine.

With all the tiny nicks in mine I wish I was getting mine replaced! Monkey what's the windscreen do to the auto dimming and fake sound maker?

Cheers for the replies guys.

I am doing mine on insurance so not paying from my pocket. I am only paying the excess which is not too bad.

Autoglass is going to replace mine as well. The guy that tried to fix it today said the replacement is going to be the same brand (Pilkington) with rain/light sensor, with the only difference the missing VW badge so I'm guessing it is going to be the same tint as the factory fitted one.

Monkey what's the windscreen do to the auto dimming and fake sound maker?

What MH was referring to is that the sensor for the auto lights (and auto wipers) is bonded to the windscreen, so a new windscreen either needs to come with one pre fitted, or somehow retrofit the old one, and there have been issues with some not working properly afterwards.

Also, the Sound Actuator actually resonates against the base of the windscreen (so is also attached to it), it's actually the windscreen that helps make the fake noises.

Hi,

Well I got a cracked windscreen after only 300 miles of ownership so your doing better than me! (Lorry on M25 kicked up a massive stone for me!).

Comments as above should lead you in the right direction. By the sounds of it you already have, but remember to tell the insurance company you want an original windscreen. They fit cheeper ones by default. If you have a Diesel, make sure they are fitting one with the extra sound proofing (Acoustic windscreen). I had to learn about all this when I had mine done. I was with VW insurance so just got it all done at my local VW garage. They organised the OEM replacement from Germany and then got someone in the fit the glass under their watchful eye!

Good Luck!

Wit so many Rs coming in leased, and also broker sold VWs where the buyer lives at the other end of the country to the supplying dealership, i'm just waiting to hear of the unlucky sod who has a smashed windscreen on the way home from collecting their car.

Well as my signature says, I don't have a diesel. I am not dealing with insurrance directly, Autoglass is. They will sort everything out. The new screen will be Pilkington identical model to the OEM which is Pilkington as well. The only difference between them is that the OEM comes with VW label in the corner while the other comes with Pilkington label. They will come sunday to install it at my place. Will see how it goes.

I had a new screen in my R after 2 months, my insurance used autoglass, i asked for an oem screen but was told i could have one but it'd cost me an extra £260!!

I went with the normal pilkington screen and it's identical and i was very happy with the job tbh.

Any issues post-replacement of the screen? Are the rain/light sensor and the sound actuator working as before?

Also as far as videos on youtube are available, I saw that they take the wipers and the trims out below and on the sides of the screen. Any rattles or unusual noise after re-fitting those back?

Yeah, they take wipers off and the trim below and on sides of the windscreen.... no rattles afterwards.

I was watching the Autoglass guy change the screen just out of interest how it's done.

No issues what so ever mate, i'd had a pretty poor experience with autoglass previously so asked if i could watch the screen get replaced and i was made up with the job the guy did, faultless job really, he fitted a new gel pack to the rain sensor and it works as before, no rattles and the sound actuator works as before as well.

I have a new windscreen

Spot on job from Autoglass. The new screen is identical to the old one, same codes on it, same tint, etc. You can't even tell that it has been replaced unless you check the Pilkington badge on the lower corner. Rain sensor works as well. Sound actuator should also work because as far as I saw, it is not attached to the windscreen, it screws into a metal plate which is part of the chassis. But I'll find out in an hour, at the moment I can't move the car for at least an hour.

Are you guys taking the car to a AG fitting centre or having one of their people come out to you?

Personally have taken the car to them in Winter when I have had the need  for a new screen as have always held teh belief that you get a better job in a workshop than out in the open air - well at least in winter anyway...

Had mine replaced at home, no issues whatsoever, that was a few months back.

Worst stonehit I ever had was on the Helsinki ring road, big stone off 4x4.... kid fist size :O
Even worse, the car (VW bus) just had a new windscreen fitted and I drove it back from the glass fitting company.

Had the fitter come to my home to replace the screen.

AutoGlass are in the process of closing all their branches as they are going mobile anyway.

Sounds like a retrograde step in terms of service on offer to the customer

They say it is more profitable for them to go mobile, however I feel sorry for the employees in the branches who will probably lose their jobs. They will probably also lose a lot of costumers who would go to a branch to have their screen fitted rather than on the side of the road.

Oh yes I bet they will save a lot of money - which will not be reflected in their prices!

I'd suggest they think that the customer mainly wants mobile fitting, because it cannot be as effecient as having a workshop site.

How many windscreens can a single mobile fitter fit in one day?

It can only be worthwhile if they need to fit them mobile because they get less customers otherwise.

They also will still need warehousing and distribution, unless they have backed that off to a third party supplier?

How many windscreens can a single mobile fitter fit in one day?

According to the chap that fitted mine, they are quite busy this time of year, high demand of windscreens. He had fitted 4 windscreens (including mine) + 2 chip repairs on Sunday alone.

How many could the same man day have achieved at a workshop though...

f**king 4x4s and lorries.

Got hit today again (lorry this time).... 10cm long crack from chip just on left edge on screen.

2nd windscreen only lasted 14k miles - despite VW emblem on it looking at size of chip it should not have cracked as badly...
