Title: Badger culling!!
Post by: Paul70 on 19 January 2015, 21:20
Need a bit of advice gents

Travelling to work the other day and hit a badger that just ran out from nowhere.

It was still dark (5am) and there did not look to be any damage but when I joined the motoray the ACC did not work and then I got an error on the front sensor.

The grill trim at the bottom of teh bumper is also smashed on one side.

Anyone had to replace the front sensor for a similar reason? Any idea on the cost??

Has anyone taken the front bumper off their car - just wondering how tricky it is?

Any info woul be great - cheers

Paul.

I'm sure someone said the replacement cost was £1000,the part alone is very expensive plus recalibration
Can take 4hours to do .

I feel your pain. I hit a badger in the Audi, cost just under £2500 to repair it

The £2500 bionic badger - a fair bit cheaper than the six-million dollar man.

T'was I and yes, it cost hundreds to get it recalibrated as far as I know. It went through the insurance so I don't have a full breakdown of costs but needless to say the bumper repairs - a bit of paint, numberplate hanger and honeycomb bit paled into insignificance compared to the radar 'repairs'.
I think the unit itself was ok as it's tucked away but the hanger broke as it's flimsy plastic - bear in mind the numberplate survived as it was only a gentle impact and yet the radar was knocked loose!

Thanks gents. Not sure at which point the badger impacted but apart from the grilled section of the bumper being broken which is a separate part there is no damage whatsoever. The radar position has not moved. Guess I will check with VW. Perhaps the radar just needs recalibrating after the impact.

What about removing the bumper - anyone done this yet? Just though I may replace the broken grill and then try a warranty claim.

I parked in Sainsburys the other day and the next morning I noticed a chip on the drivers front wheel arch right on the crease above the sensor and also a scratch horizontally on the bumper just above the grill.

I took it to a body repair shop for a quote and they've quoted me £180 plus vat to remove the bumper and reset all the sensors.

Having read some comments on here I'm now not sure that this is the bargain it seems. If they're not approved repairers for VW am I running the risk of affecting any warranties by having this work done?

Exonian I saw your comment earlier about your shunt. Are you familiar with Kynaston Auto bodies on Marsh Barton?

Would appreciate some feedback please.

Dave

Dave, I know of Kynaston, I think they're ok.
Ask them to spray the bumper OFF the car if they're doing paintwork so you don't get any potential overspray issues or low bake ovens taking the lustre out of the plastic trim.

To be honest without seeing a photo I'd guess a smart repair might be a better option?
Also, why would the sensors need re calibrating if they've not been knocked out of their holders?
The radar reset is a big VW main dealer only job and costs hundreds from what I've been told but the parking sensors will soon let you know if they're not working properly either when you get close to something and they don't start shrieking or the opposite.
The radar will also tell you if it's not feeling well as it will flash up on the screen saying it can't detect objects and switches out.

I dread to think how many second hand VWs fitted with these radars will be running round with faulty or inoperative units due to repair costs once out of warranty.

VWs bodyshop is at Sowton and might be worth getting a quote.

Some info on bumper removal here..http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?7431-DIY-Retrofit-Xenon-Headlights Some screws to remove underneath the splitter as well. To get to the ones in the wheel well just make sure you don't turn your wheels to full lock. The word of warning here is when i did it i couldn't get the steering lock off! i had to give the steering wheel an almighty tug and turn the key at the same time.

Thanks for the replies. Exonian I've used Kynaston before and they did a good job. I just wasn't sure if there were any issues around the parking sensors. There isn't any damage to them and he told me it would've been a lot cheaper but for the fact the bumper has to come off to make sure there's no lustre issues. It's a company car and we have a £500 excess so my boss has approved it. But it suddenly struck me that I might be disregarding the warranty. Thanks for the reassurance.

It's good to hear you've had a good service from Kynaston before. They've been around a long time and Paul (the owner or ex-owner) used to restore classics a long time ago. Maybe he still does, I've lost touch with these things over the years.

The only thing you'll lose warranty wise will be the paintwork that's been repaired. VW warranty will still stand on the other parts and at the end of the day if it's just a company car then you're not going to worry too much in the very long term!
It's worth checking the brackets for the sensors are ok but they'll soon let you know if they're not working properly.

As for photos, there are guides on here but basically you need a photobucket account or Flickr or similar and copy the [img] tags into the message box on the forum. You can get apps on your phone which makes it dead easy. I could always pop round and have a look.
