Title: At last a good looking BMW 1 Series
Post by: am1w on 16 January 2015, 14:49
Official video from BMW:

Looks like a Golf from behind. At least in white.

That does look much improved. From the front it looks like they have swapped the headlight and side grills around in terms of size/shape!

And seriously Golfy from the back... could be a GTD with the double exhaust, light clusters and the low level reflectors.

A bit better but i don't know why they don't just rip off the Golf, imagine all the potential new customers.
Not rocket science is it.

I love it. Prefer it to a Golf. Great job BMW. Will be back with you in 3 years for a performance hatchback.

And the M135i will come with xDrive! Damn, I should have waited for this car.

Does it still look like a bread van from the side though?

Having just been to the BMW website.... yes it does.

The problem is caused by trying to stick a traditional BMW 3/5 series style front end onto what is a boxy hatch back.

Its like someone did a cut and shut with a Ford Focus and a 3 Series.

A step in the right direction, but no aggressive look on the front end and still looking like a bread van (although slightly less so) side-on, I still wouldn't be tempted.

I like it. In fact I have considered a BMW of some sorts to replace the Golf in the future. I had a look at the 2 Series Active Tourer, but wasn't overly struck on it. As it would only be a small runaround for my wife, perhaps this new 1 would do.

Is it front wheel drive or xDrive like the 2, or rear?

I like it. But to be honest I liked the existing one. My wife has a 116i M-Sport which we got brand new in September. We were going to wait for this new model but were offered a large discount if we ordered the existing model so we took it.

I'm not totally sold on the new rear end but I would have liked the LED headlights and adaptive cruise control, we specced ours up so it has pretty much everything else!

It is still rear wheel drive then  The new car is just a facelift to bring it into line with the current corporate styling.

The LCI M135i will come in both sDrive (RWD) and xDrive (4WD). However, all BMW xDrive cars are RWD biased.

Better than the outgoing one but looks like it's having a bit of an identity crisis.  Not for me.

I'm not fussed about the M135i. I want a car for my wife that will cost pence to run and nothing to tax. Although she says she likes a car with a reasonable amount of go, the reality is she drives in a such a way that if she hasn't bettered 60mpg between fill ups, she's failed.

The M135i will then be renamed M140i and will bring about a power increase. The current model is making 320 bhp and the new one will make more in the region of 350 bhp.

I'm hoping you will be able spec limited slip differential also from factory.

Yeh I'm liking the look of the new 1 series. I'm glad it's lost the bulbous front headlights anyway but I'm struggling with the rear a bit but I'm sure it will be grower. I may just have to push the button on one of these in a few years time. Best start saving again!

The only trouble with the x-drive is bmw don't seem to fit the m sport springs therefore it rides higher and softer like the 335d.

Don't worry about that. Just get some AC Schnitzer springs to lower it. Cost around £800. Win, win.

Slightly improved looks front and rear. My biggest criticism with the current model was the interior space ( a bit tight) but especially the height of floor!!
Put me right off. That and the B*** E**s BMW employ to sell them !!

Absolutely love the rear on the MK1.

Still a bread van

My biggest grief is the M sport seats giving me back ache and poor rear visibility

Have a late mk1 118d M Sport, and tbh I never liked them when they were originally released.  It did grow on me though, and I honestly think the mk1 is the best looking of the lot.  I'm not a fan of the bulbous look BMW have incorporated into all of their range in the last 5/6 years either.  The only car I think retains the BMW aggressive look and stance in that period is the new M5.  Everything else is all average at best I think.
