Hi I'm new to the forum,so unsure if this is the right area.
I've got a 1999 golf gti 1.8t,and need oil it's on 170k.
Would it be 10w40 or 5w40?
Thanks

5w40 at least if not 0w40, every 10k miles or one year at the least.
Good oils have VW 502.00 as well as MB 229.5 approval.

But, if it hasn't been run on it it's whole life then you should go to a thicker oil.
I've been running 10w40 and i've had no problems so far.

I would only use and recommended 5w40 fully syn

At 170k it might be worth checking the oil pump pick up pipe if you have no record of it ever being replaced.
