So, someone reversed into me the other day unfortunately he is my friend so I am considering just having him pay for the repair, but this would leave me without a car for a while, which isn't really ideal.
So, how much damage, or % of value of the car would be needed to write off a car?
I've got a mk4 150PD, the mods are not insured individually, so minus all of the mods I guess, right?

The dents is maybe an inch deep at its worst.
Cheers

that would be classed as a write off as it would cost to much to repair to a decent standard
-
THAT is a write off?!
Jesus, if someone sneezed on my mk2 they would write it off then

well think about it to repair right it would need a new panel and its not just an hour or 2 job and with labour rates in most bodyshops it wont be cheap  you could have it pulled and filled but that's not ideal but would cost a lot less

Another scrapper to provide a new heart for a mk2

be a quick mk2 with the pd150 in it

A good body shop can make that look decent for maybe £500 (if the crinkle by the light is damage?)
It is an old car who cares if its got filler in it, get some prices before you do anything as once it's written off you cant go back.
-
i would agree, wright off.
take it to a body shop and ask for a quote cash in hand no recipt, that's your best bet imo.
-
Ok...
I like my car too much to allow them to write it off. Too much time and money invested. Looks like the guy will pay whatever it costs! :lipsrsealed:
-
Usually around 70% of value sometimes as low as 50% being mk4 with that damage no surprise there really. Some insurers/body shop that rear 1/4 needs replacing Not filling.
-
Been quoted £350 all in with some extra work from a local guy. Couple of people at work recommend him and have seen some of his work.
The guy who hit me is obv happy me also...Getting it repaired while I'm away so no real hardship!
-
They would write it off under insurance but good result with getting it sorted.

I don't know why people are all saying write off??
My £1200 Passat was repaired at the cost of £800 as they didn't want to write it off! (there valuation was much higher than mine or what I could buy one for)

if his car would have went through insurance they would have wrote it off that's why

I feel a point was just missed here.
Wasn't Boneybradly saying that in his case (pretty similar if not worse to the OP) insurance did not write it off...
Regardless, positive result for OP!

so just because his was repaired means they would have done this 1 too  every case is different and if boneys rear quarter panel was damaged chances are they would have wrote that off too

Everyone is saying it's a write off, when it's the insurer who decides, they don't always make sense when it comes to repair as in my case and it was the rear corner and quarter that was damaged on mine. They still repaired it.
Even you said would be classed as a write off (unless your the claims assessor, how can you know?)

claim assessor has nothing to do with it he just sends a report of cost and damage to insurance company  and did they replace your panels or repair them
-
is it worth the possibility of it being written off though brad?
don't know how the insurance stuff works, and whether you can say actually I don't want it to be written off ill repair myself or something if they do decide its not woth fixing?

He does have a major part in it actually!
I deal with them on average once or twice a month and they have the authority to say yes to a repair or not.
Saying that, you are right in some occasions, sometimes they won't use one and sometimes they even just send a photographer and decide for themselves.

great you deal with them once a month  I deal with them everyday so know they have nothing to do with it they just write an assessment on damage and cost the insurance do the rest

Explain how Hoopers engineers authorise repairs in writing to me then?

That's what agreed value classic policies are for. If my Mk2 got in a scrape, I'd get £50 for it as a write off payout on a run of the mill policy. As it is, I have it insured for an agreed value quite a bit higher than that.
