Title: New Car
Post by: stina on 02 January 2015, 18:16
Hi all ,
I wasn't looking to buy a Golf , but at the end of last year i sold my 1974 V8 P6 Rover to a collector on the Isle of Man . TBH i was looking to replace it with a Saab 900 and a Suzuki Bandit for commuting and kicks ( Bought the bike and it certainly delivers the kicks ! )
Any hoo , i had travelled a good few miles on wild goose chases looking at early 90s Saabs and was ebaying one night and this Golf came up , something told me to "Go for it" Year 2000 , one owner and 43k miles with a full history to back it all up . I'll be honest and say i only realised the 20v turbo was a good buy after buying it , i was not at all into WVs . However it goes pretty well . and i'd like to keep it . Wondering how easy they are to look after on a DIY basis ? I have already had a poke around and got to know it a bit ,, i quite happily rebuilt the V8 and the auto box in the Rover on my own ( and it was running strong when i let Her go ) I've not owned a "Modern" car for a long long time , Planning on buying a fault reader and learning as much as i can about it .
tips , advice , thoughts welcome

There's more reflex silver ones about, yours is a satin silver which is the better one IMO

I thought the red "I" was used on the first 180bhp GTI's to show that it was a 180bhp and not the 150bhp?

Folks on the forum say, it was what badges were in the box there and then at the time of sale/delivery

The red 'I' denoted the higher power models. At the time, the N/A 1.8 20V sometimes came with an all silver GTI badge, whereas the 1.8T came with the badge you have. The same applied to diesels. The 90PS model had an all silver TDI badge and the 110PS one had a red 'I'

This all went to cock when the PD diesel engines came along as they all had a red 'DI' regardless of power output. That is until the 150PS TDI was launched which initially had an all red TDI badge, but that was soon replaced by GTI with a red 'I' as it was had the same spec as the petrol 1.8T.

The 180PS petrol GTI also had a GTI with a red 'I' badge, but was externally distinguished from the 150 model by having vented rear discs and a 4 Motion front valance.

Got it? Good.

My 1.8T had a silver 'I' from the factory so that blows that idea out of the water lol

No more talk of red I's or I'll have to clean the thread up or lock it, we've done this a thousand times over
