Title: New owner!
Post by: spursman on 01 January 2015, 17:38
Hi,

Happy New Year!

Be gentle, first time poster and new owner of a Golf GTI! (230, PP)

Absolutely love the car. Bought an ex-demo and it's in very good condition. Just over 3000 miles on the clock.

I've mainly been on short journeys - is the mpg in the linked pic to be expected or is it a little low? Appreciate this is just a short journey, but wanted to make sure the figures look ok. Appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks!

On a 4 mile journey with the oil perhaps not even cracking 50C, that's fine. If you'd been on a journey 10+ miles you'd have probably been into the low 30s.

Happy new year to all, haven't been near my car for a few days, sat in Coco's outback pub in Amsterdam (as I was for seeing in New Year).

Thanks. after 8 miles the mpg is up to 28. Looking at the long-term stats the previous 1000 miles averaged 29mpg. If that's in the ballpark then I'm happy. Is it true the running in of the car has a long-term impact on achieved mpg?

Appreciate your help.

I've run in one new VW not ideally (on my 7th new one) and it's been thirsty for both oil and fuel. Keep an eye on the oil (if it only needs a litre every 5000 miles at most, maybe not even needing any between services then you're doing fine). On a 15+ mile journey you should be doing 32mpg if you don't hammer it. The car will only be around 2/3 efficient until warm.

Thanks.

I guess the problem with buying demo is that the vw rep is unlikely to run it in gently. Am I right in saying that with these modern engines the run-in is less of an issue?

Are you concerned with the 29mg over 1000 miles? The car had averaged 36mpg on a 200 mile journey that was mainly motorways.

So should i regularly be dipping the oil?

Once a week check for the oil is fine, once the engine has cooled and on a level surface. Is say banging the engine is worse than giving it a bit of a work out once warm. 36mpg on a 200mile motorway journey could be considered ok depending on how it got there. Doing 75/80 all the way in winter you've done well. If it did 36mpg doing 60mph over 200 miles in the summer then that's poor.

I noticed you've got it set to ECO in your picture, in my experience that mode isn't always the most economical strangely, try running it in normal for a bit and see if it improves? Tbh though 29mpg isn't bad going round town.

I have just clocked up my first 1000 miles. I averages 40 mpg on the 300 miles trip back from the dealer taking it very steady and varying the revs. Since I got home I have averaged 31 mpg for 700 miles with mainly short 6 mile trips. Not sure if this will improve , I am happy with 30 mpg  as only do around 8k miles a year

Interesting about ECO v normal.

Caprigreen - what mode have you been using.

Will give it a try over the weekend.

But I'm definitely not going to lose sleep over 2-3mpg :)

I doubt my car has had the best run in but hopefully my careful maintenance will improve things.

Hello spursman.
I steer clear of ECO completely as it makes the car a bit torpid on throttle response and steering + firms up the damping to a more sporty feel.
Other bits like aircon, lighting etc may be worth doing in ECO.
As you have the DCC you can toggle to get the best results from available parameters in Individual and find what suits.
I'm on 12.5k now and have recently done family visits, 200 mile round trip in Normal mode.Got 39mpg going about 50mph for about 30 miles and 90-95 the rest.Used aircon all the way + heated seats for some of the time.
I'm sure the figures will come as it has been cold and your drives seem to have been limited.
Keep on enjoying it.

I have been running in Normal mode. Cornwall is rural roads with lots of hills so dont expect to lead the MPG league table

Glad its not just me who struggles to see any difference in ECO mode.....As others have said it turns the car into a terrible car to drive. Ive tried it and cannot see any difference in MPG on the same route at the same speed.

Worse thing about ECO is when using ACC on the motorway is starts slowing the car way too early when approaching another car....it forces you to pull out way to early.

Completely agree about Normal v ECO after a little run. Will not use ECO again..

I just love this car!

Do these stats look ok? Bear in mind ice at start up. Mix of A/B roads and then a 7 mile stretch on Motorway around 70mph.

Seems about right to me

Couple more pics to look at!

First one is my run this morning..typical day for me with a school run and then journey to work in moderate traffic. Are these figures to be expected? Suggests I will get ~ 320 miles out of this tank.

Second image is the data since fill up. Again do these figures look reasonable given the majority of my runs are usually just a few miles?

Absolutely loving it though. Switch to sport mode when I need that little burst of acceleration

Just filled up my first tank after 271 miles, 25 miles left on the range counter. So that means an approximate tank range of 300 miles.

True mpg of 26.5 for the tank. Admittedly most journeys are short and at rush-hour.

Can anyone with similar use confirm their tank range? Was hoping I'd manage circa 30mpg but I guess I'm only 4 off that so not too bad..

Thanks

I can't speak for the GTI but the GTD gets a lot worse MPG on short runs so if you're getting lower than expected MPG it may well be down to your shorter distances. Obviously this might be wrong but it's definitely the case with the diesel engine.
