Title: K04 setup on AGU
Post by: MoMartin on 28 December 2014, 14:41
Hi, I've been looking into turbo options for my AGU and have found that a k04 to k03/s downpipe adapter is available. This adapter should cut the cost / hassle of the k04 upgrade, but it has also made me wonder what else would be needed.
Starting from the top - I have a stage 2 K03 AGU (fmic, pipercross filter, decat / 3" downpipe, Forge 007p)
I'll also be needing these mods:
Fuel injectors
3" maf / TIP
and a 3 or 5 Bar fuel pressure regulator(?)
k04 turbo (with oil feeds?)

k03/s to k04 adapter -

Is there anything else that i have missed and does this k04 adapter look like a good buy?

Thanks in advance.

How much does that pipe cost?

£100

Edit - will I need the k04 charge pipe too?

Sorry for being vague haha, a guy on the vag cars / car parts Facebook group has started producing them.

The post always seems to dissapear whenever I go to look at it, but the guy seems to post it quite frequently.

The easiest way IMO would be to have the outlet of the K04 cut and shut with a K03 as beach buggy turbos do. The only thing you'd have to look into then would be the TIP

That's a shame and when you say all I need is a tip, what about the 3" maf, injectors and the fuel pressure regulator?
Surely those are still required too?

Edit -  found the adapter on ebay

Sorry I meant as a bolt on turbo, wasn't including hardware like the injectors etc. As a rule you'll need whatever came on the K04 equipped cars, you won't need a 4bar FPR unless you go for a Revo map though

Ah okay thanks, just out of interest, why would it only be needed with a revo map? Do they tune it to a higher spec or something?

Revo seem to need a 4bar fuel pressure reg for their maps, most other tuners don't. It's not a case of higher spec, it's just what they prefer and can make work

Ah I see, it's a strange requirement if it isn't necessarily required

revo will also ask for a manual boost controller to be fitted as they said I needed 1 but r-tech never

I was looking to go down this exact route too with my agu.

Debating between ko4 and beach buggy k03 hybrid. Cost might work out slightly less with k04.

Plus is that its cheap and easy to replace the k04 and readily available but downside is that its a used one.

what made you want to go k04 instead of hybrid?

I have the same kind of idea as you really, they're cheap to buy and replace. And with a few modifications, they can see a pretty high power too.

like what?

Or do you mean should you decde to go k04 hybrid in the future?

I wouldn't buy a used 1 when a new k04 is cheap but a bb k418 is about the same money

Well if talking buying new k04 then ma aswel buy ko3 hybrid as thats around same price less fuss.

And if going k418t then thats even more as to use it properly it will mean forged internals and likely lsd so add around £2k+ on to build

I meant that I would buy a used k04 that's in a good condition and just hope it doesn't fail on me haha

That 1st pick was my set up but sold all turbo parts gone big turbo now and has worked out cheaper that going k04 route I purchased 1st time round. Sold all k04 bits more that I paid so was win win for me.

I ran a k03 hybrid, k300 from bbt, mapped by Badger5 and rate it highly, I think the k300 gives good value, all required parts are available off the shelf, an easy drop in upgrade on a budget. My GT30 upgrade by comparison is several times the cost of the k300 setup

Cost a lot more if forging thata already done with ported head and intake, turbo, exh manifold, downpipe and lines i purchased cheaper than hybrid. Wouldn't run the bbt 418t if not forged to get full potential from it.

Definitely anyone going for k04 hybrid will want rods doing, unfortunately for me my manifold alone is just over £900 alone with close to £400 on just oil and water lines, already more than the whole k300 cost me  but on the upside it should be a very robust setup and better suited to my needs.
