Quick question, unsure what to do here. GTD is a year old, 18,500 happy miles later and i am due a service along with an oil change. However, here is my issue, i have an R coming in March which is 9/10 weeks away, do i need a service or should i postpone it to VW to carry out at there own expense as its £150.00 i could do without spending seeing as im punting it on a PX. So should i just cancel the service or do i need to have it done? Thoughts please. Fraser

Pretty sure your warranty is void if you don't keep up with the service schedule. Can they not do you a better deal than £150 since you're trading up after 12 months?
-
The "tolerance" is supposed to be 1000 miles or a month I believe,so unless you had some extenuating circumstances like your local dealerships within an hours drive couldn't fit you in for 2 months, I couldn't see there being a legitimate reason to go without a service, especially as you're already on longlife and want to take it even further.
£150 for your first longlife service seems a bargain, I paid more than that for my MK5 GT TDI in 2006.
Are you sure it'll be 9 or 10 weeks away? Last check on mine (prior to adding Pretorias) saw that it had slipped from estimated BW4 to estimated BW8.

I rang vwcs and its bw4 so id like to think id get it 1st march as the salesman said. Even end of march still paying 150 for a service annoys me but ah well. I better just get service done dnt wnt them to give me abuse later for it pr for them to be difficult when it comes to the r so

Could help if I count, more like 12 ha

 After over 20 years in the motor trade in the aftersales side(escaped 8 years ago) I find it rather sad to read that it is obviously ok to buy on desire and then complain about appropriate and timely maintenance. What is the matter with people, 30k for a car and 50 quid to service it! Makes me glad I can now buy new and not rely on some cheaply/compromised used car that you couldn't be bothered to maintain correctly.
-
Lol when did I say I wasnt maintaining it, cars like brand new. All I was stating was its pretty annoying having to service a new car for 150 when in a little of 2 months im havi g a new car when they are going to get the full benefit of it selling it on to some punter. Chill my man
-
Its a mind set thing, when you have your new car you will not have to pay anything for 12 months, think of it that way ?

It's weird how much your perception changes on your current car when a new one is on its way. I don't even think of my GTD as my car any more.
When my GTD got clattered 2 weeks ago tomorrow it wasn't as big a deal to me as I thought it might be, the things really pissing me off about the incident right now is the other side's reluctance to inform their insurer about the incident.

Personally I'd get it serviced on time ... you owe it to the next owner and to the dealer.
If they've already given you a part-ex price I'd be surprised if it didn't allow for the car being serviced on time. They may possibly want to renegotiate the part-ex price if they find you've ignored the first service.
-
if the dealer is taking in two months time just ask them what they would like done with it. If thy say service it - suggest that they do it for free or at least at cost....

Makes sense to me

VirginVWman, I must say that trying to put off a service for 2 or 3 months past due is doing nothing to dispel the stereotype of Scots being tight.
A completely different dilemma is me being too tight to ditch unworn Bridgestones for something a little grippier than a wet glass floor. I might've stuck with the DTUK equipped GTD if it wasn't for the tramping. Will I ditch the tyres on day 1 if my R arrives on Bridgestones? I'd like to think I would, but something's telling me I probably won't.
Asked in Costco today about the cost of 235/35 R19s - they don't do Michelin PS3s in that size, it's an order in of Michelin Supersports at £169.18 each - ouch! £609 for a complete reshoe inc a £70 voucher that is frequently running on a set of 4 19"ers (but not right now).

I have also faced the same dilemma that my current car needs its first service but have a new car just built and sitting at Emden waiting for a ship.
In my opinion there is no dilemma. Current car needs a service. £154.02 job done. Service book stamped.
Result warranty intact, no potential arguments about missing service history when trading in or selling and a nice cup of coffee, free wifi, poke about in a few nice shiny new cars in the showroom and a chat with my salesman.
Not a bad way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning

I'd fully agree with the above - if you keep running the car beyond the 1 month/1000 mile window of discretion VW give you then officially you're mistreating the car and putting the warranty in jeopardy. The onus is on you to service the car if it is due while you still have it, a p/x with no warranty or no service history is going to take a bigger valuation hit than £150 spent correctly on the service.
