Title: Newbie needs help
Post by: Misterp on 04 December 2014, 22:23
So I have been giving it a lot of thought and took the plunge and ordered a load of detailing products from two separate  sites (to benefit from a free gift from each - you have to maximise the offers available).

Anyway back to it, I bought a decontamination pack from auto finesse (inc the obliterate, iron out, clay fluid and clay bar) spritz interior cleaner, Avalanche foam cleaner and imperial tyre cleaner. Autofinesse kindly sent a free 250ml tough coat sealant.

From the other site I ordered autofinesse tripple and total along with some Dr Leather Wipes. I am awaiting delivery and the free gift.

Anyway, I'm ok using the Avalanche and washing the car. The questions I have and some input would be fantastic are as follows:

- after washing (and drying) to decontaminate do I simply spray on the obliterate let it do its magic then wash off then dry then spray the iron out wash off and dry again then clay as set out on auto finesse's website.
- onced polished, I have gtechniq c2v3 but have PPL used the tough coat and if so which is better.

I am due to take up most of my Saturday doing this as I have no saturday league game nor do the villa play till Sunday (priorities hey).

I'm completely new to the whole decontamination process but it doesn't seem to hard in the guides on the net. May take longer but I'm happy to put the effort in.

Hi

I don't use AF decon products but use Tardis and IronX which do same job as Oblitarate and Iron out.

The decon process is as you state and though not always necessary to dry the car in between all the decon stages, if you have hard water I would advise drying in between each stage, otherwise you might get water spots which clay doesn't always remove.  So process something like this:

Pre wash (snow foam)
Wash and rinse car, dry if required
Apply Oblitarate a panel at a time (leave 1 minute) wipe off with a microfibre, then rinse panel at a time
All over rinse or wash/rinse if preferred, dry if required
Apply Iron out a few panels at a time (leave 5-10 mins), agitate if required and rinse off
Wash and dry car
Clay
Wash thoroughly and dry (snow foam pre wash optional)
Polish
Preferred last stage protection LSP, which may include one or more of the following:
Sealant
Glaze
Wax

Don't bother washing the micro fibre used on the Oblitarate as it will stink out your washing machine and subsequent washes, just chuck it away, in an outside bin.

Hope this helps.  Not used Tough Coat so can't comment

Thanks dude.

One question, dirt build up under the arches. What's the best way to get this clean.

One question, dirt build up under the arches. What's the best way to get this clean.

Rear arches are always the worst for attracting dirt and harder to clean than the fronts, but for both:-

Snow foam under arches, jet wash off the worst and and wash using a decent dedicated wheel mitt and/or a sturdy wheel brush like this:
http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wheels-and-tyres/ez-detail-brush/prod_480.html

Make this part of your regular cleaning regime and it'll help keep on top of things

Now finished. But took forever. When I clayed it there wasn't much contamination surprisingly. Bloody english weather meant I had to rush. Hopefully i did ok. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Thanks for the help guys. Is it wise to get rid of the dual foam applicator after use.

Depends what you used it to apply?  If it was any decon stuff then, yes.  If used to apply sealant then just wash it.

Used it to apply all in one polish.

It should be fine in washing machine (not with clothes obviously).  Or hand wash and rinse.

Thought as much. Thanks for all the help.

So this is what I started with

(http://i1346.photobucket.com/albums/p689/misterp86/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps84e6abec.jpg)admittedly, I have been too busy on weekends to even try and the days when I have been free it's been raining.

And after the hours of slaving away in the cold this is they end product.

Looking at it it can do with a machine polish but that is not summat I will do as I don't have the tools so I will have to pay someone to do that.

Just finished the inside. I must say the autofinesse products are good  but not too happy with the Gtechniq shampoo But that is nearly finished so I will replace it with something else.

I also need some good glass cleaner and trim restorer.

What a transformation!  Looks stunning, great job

A really good reliable shampoo is Dodo Juice Born to be Mild, PH neutral.  Autoglym Fast Glass is great, Auto Finesse Crystal glass does a reasonable job.  Trim restorer, for exterior - Chemical Guys New Look Trim Gel is quite good and doubles up as a decent tyre dressing too.

Machine polishing is a little daunting at first and requires an initial capital outlay, but with a DA, once you get the hang of it (plenty of youtube vids to help) it's pretty easy and very satisfying, if a bit time consuming.  Or you can just pay a professional

Thanks guys. The Mrs was a bit miffed that I spent my first free Saturday in ages with the car. She came out this morning and said wow. So that shut her up.

Fantastic results Misterp, and the sealant should make future washes a touch easier!

What did you do on the inside? I've been meaning to get some Gtechniq smart fabric but haven't got round to it yet.

Also nice to get that sort of reaction from the other half

Did you put any sealant/wax on the wheels? Pays to take care of that diamond cut finish in particular

I used Gtechniq on the rims and the body as I have some to get through before I use the free auto finesse tough coat. I sealed all the rims bar one as it is due in for a refurb next week and the guys at detail my ride will be sorting it for me.

More annoying, car was in at Vw today for a light issue and they have washed it. Wtf not to happy hope they haven'tessedy efforts up.

I used the Dr leather wipes ony seats. I wasn't best impressed with the gtechniq leather cleaner.

The C2v3? Good stuff, I use C5 on mine and it's excellent.

Would hate to think of the dealer washing my car, did you tell them not to wash it?

The dealer washed your car   You have to spell it out to them, big sign in prominent position gets the message across as well as verbal instruction.

Gtechniq L1 is good for protecting leather, but is a leather guard as opposed to a cleaner so a once/twice a year application only.  For weekly cleaning I like Dodo Juice supernatural leather cleaner.  Don't rate the Auto Finesse leather cleaner at all, leave a sticky residue even after buffing off.

It's my naievety really. I wasn't expecting them to do it considering the fault for which it went into the dealership (bend lighting fault)

You live and learn. I will be spelling it out in the future. I used the Dr learher wipes. I was very impressed. I will probably seal the leather seats with the g techniq.

I Auto Finnesse only on the outside and for the inside I don't think that you can go wrong with Autoglym Car Glass Polish, the trick with this is not to use too much.

No problem. A decent glass cloth is a worthy purchase too. The tighter weave on a glass cloth helps loads.

I also use Autoglym Fastglass on the internal glass.  Have used Auto Finesse internally in the past but not too keen on it.

Externally I clean all glass the Autoglym, and if I'm waxing the car then all external glass gets waxed too at the same time, EXCEPT the windscreen.  I don't use anything else on front windscreen as I find it buggers up the wipers, juddering, squeaking etc.  Used to use RainX but had nothing but problems after using it.  So the windscreen is kept product free and no issues.

As Neil says, a waffle window cloth is essential, much better than a microfibre as it has more 'bite'.
