Does anyone have recommendations for winter tyre/wheel combo sets for the MK7 GTi...?
Thank you

Suggest you rely on the Winter Tyre reviews done by Autoexpress rather than other peoples recommendations - they are at least an independent comparison.
mrwinterwheels offers some good packages with genuine German wheels and a selection of top quality tyres - I bought mine from them with the Goodyear package.

If you have the performance pack Gti you will need 17 wheels, standard GTi/GTD will take 16s.

thank you very much really helpful I will have a look at their website

Good advice re checking reviews. Only points I would add to above are choose a slightly narrower tyre, 205/50 is recommended and will provide superior grip over 225/45 in poor conditions. I would also be concerned about a H speed rating and would prefer higher. I chose Nokian WR-A3 205/50 R17 93V last year and I'm very happy but of course last Winter wasn't too bad

I bought a set of 4 205/50/17 VR Continental WinterContact TS 830P Tyres for £680.00 last winter, and they've been great. I just put them back on the car a week or so ago and even in conditions where the Bridgestones should be quite comfortable the Continentals have noticeably better grip.

Just come across the latest Whatcar winter tyre review - linky

Their top rated Goodyear Ultras are on offer at mrwinterwheels, and I have them and recommend them

Does anyone know if ET55 will fit a GTi with PP. Thinking of some steel wheels like the T5 transporter for the winter tyre combo?

Do not know the Transporter but if the stud pattern is the same as the Golf (5 x 112 NOT 5 x 100) and you stay under 205s they should be OK, wheels need to be 17s, or 18s, to fit over the PP calipers - 16s will NOT fit.
So 5 x 112 17inch diameter and 205 wide max but better option would be to see my second post in this thread and go for a spare set of new Alloys with quality tyres

many thanks

Is Vw the only place you can get 6j x 17 wheels from with a et48 offset? I want to put the 205 50 17 tyres on but can't find any wheels alloy or steel? Vw want over 1400 quid!!!

Winter will be over by the time you find some!
Have you tried any of the ebay.de sellers? They're usually 2/3 of the price for official new stuff - or maybe a Skoda dealer can help for a lot less than the VW price?

bought mine from www.mytyres.co.uk
Heres an example : http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/komplettrad.pl?cart_id=83413854.110.25069&Cookie=&CGISESSID=84a39376fd1788ab34458f3ac996deee&language=EN&dsco=110&typ=winter&Session_Detail=Nokian_WR-A3_205_50_17_D-117077&Change=Detail&BestellNr=TTDY8KA48V&BrandCode=142&TypeCode=26611&ModelCode=4001 (http://www.mytyres.co.uk/cgi-bin/komplettrad.pl?cart_id=83413854.110.25069&Cookie=&CGISESSID=84a39376fd1788ab34458f3ac996deee&language=EN&dsco=110&typ=winter&Session_Detail=Nokian_WR-A3_205_50_17_D-117077&Change=Detail&BestellNr=TTDY8KA48V&BrandCode=142&TypeCode=26611&ModelCode=4001)
£660 :nerd:

They are the wrong offset and width for 205 50 17.they should be 6" wide not 7 and the offset should be 48 not 40.
-
you can fit different wheels than 6" and ET48....
I have 16x6.5 ET50....
On mytyres you have a choice of wheels.... there are plenty with ET50 at 6" wide.
They are fine to use on Mk7 GTD.
Alternatively I can sell you my 16" Audi speedlines with 205 55 16 tyres (2x Michelin Alpin A4, 2x Avon Ice Touring ST - all approx 7-7.5mm)
-
Thanks for the offer but I'm looking for 17". I know you can fit other sizes but I was hoping for the official vw fitment sizes.
-
Have you tried škoda wheels?
The 'Crystals' look OK and you should be able to get wheels for 600£ plus tyres (guessing they're another 350-400).

Excellent find cheers

Have found two sets of genuine vw winter wheels. One set of mk6 meribels with 205 50 17 Dunlop 3d winter tyres and two sets of mk7 dijon winters one with 205 50 17s and the other with 224 45 17s both with pirelli soto winters. Only difference is the meris have a 48.5 et and the dijons have 48 and 50. Can't decide which ones to go for.
-
Go for Dijons, the Meribels, or more the Dunlop 3D are quite old (rubber gets hard).
Won't matter what size tyre too much, check which tyres are more expensive and take cheaper option.
The Sotto Zero are decent winter tyres, my brother has them on his Giulietta.
-
I think the 225 tyres are cheaper than the 205s but the 205s are the official vw winter option. Will the 205s make that much of a difference from the 225 18s?
-
From my experience 205 will only be at advantage in very deep snow.
I fitted 205 winters purely cos 205 55 16 are 85£ a pop and 225 45 17 winters were well around 140£ a pop at my local tyre place.
205 50 17 is a strange size so would be more expensive than 205 55 16 so would guess they are more expensive...
Forget about official VW.... all winter wheels and tyres they sell are optional extras from the accessories catalog, NOT factory fitted despite the "VW" branding.
-
The 205 50 17's are the correct size for the winter option as is the 205 55 16. I'll have a quick look and see what I can get the tyres for.
-
What I meant was that 205 50 17 is a rare dimension... as in used on relatively few cars. So would not be surprised if they are not less than 225 45 17 (though you can't get them on 6" wheels I would think).
-
The 205s go on a 6”rim but the 225s are on 6.5 or 7”rim.
