Post by: Ze german on 29 November 2014, 21:46
Hi guys just a quick question any owners have the standard sat nav with the small screen , is there any difference other than the size of the screen with the pro nav ?

Do most order with standard or is the upgraded screen much better ?

From the VW Configurator:

Discover Navigation system (DNS)
5.8" colour touch-screen control system for navigation, CD and radio functions. Preloaded European navigation data, 2D/2,5D map view, three calculated routes (Fast, Short, Eco), dynamic navigation based on TMC , branded points of interest and Traffic Sign display. (Includes navigation software updates for a period of three years, please contact your authorised Volkswagen retailer for full details)

Discover Pro nav/radio system (DNS PRO)
Discover Pro touch-screen DVD nav/radio system with integrated voice control. 8" colour touch-screen with activated voice control system - responds to voice commands for navigation, CD, DVD and radio functions. 64 GB SSD hard drive. Pre-loaded European navigation data, 3D map view, three calculated routes (fast, short, eco), dynamic navigation based on TMC , branded points of interest, traffic sign display and SD card reader x 2.

The DNS Pro has a higher resolution screen.

DP also has the benefit that you can import POIs (like speed cameras), something that you cannot do on the CM....

Just FYI the "standard" head unit does not include sat nav, the systems that am1w quoted are optional extras.

Thank you jimble . I have driven the car with sat nav fitted and am looking to potentially buy but was disappointed with the small screen !
Thought the idea of having a smaller screen rubbish

Thanks for the info . Do you have smaller screen or pro set up ?

Is the pro set up much better ?

I have the navpro, it is better than the standard nav unit in a few ways, but its priced for if VW Car Net was actually enabled and usable in the UK.

If that feature was actually available I would say its a no brainer, as it is, you are paying for a bigger screen, 3d maps, an SSD which you will probably never use for media storage (because 2 SD slots plus another USB connector for an ipod/phone/USB storage AND Bluetooth audio are probably quite enough for even the most mental music nutter) oh and a DVD drive should you ever be stationary and want to watch a DVD (I've done it once, just because....).

You do get voice control as well, it sort of works in a clunky kinda way like most voice control systems.

Looking back now, I'd probably make a different choice, maybe take the standard CMS, add Dynaudio instead and buy a decent tomtom with the wizzy traffic system on it.

Whatever is said - you can't beat the look of the big screen which looks just right in the GTI/GTD/R. The cost is way too high but so is the cost of many things in life.

Unfortunately, I have neither as my car arrives first week of March 2015.

I have ordered the DNS and not the DNS Pro as I find the price charged for the latter exorbitant.

The DNS has a smaller and lower resolution screen and in a side-by-side comparison looks a bit rubbish to the high resolution DNS Pro screen. But I never look at the screen and will just listen to the lovely gal's voice instructions and also look at the directions in the binnacle.

I have the £2000 Pro Nav in my BMW and though the screen graphics are great, I hardly look at them when being directed. I just listen to the lovely gal and look at the direction display in front of me in the binnacle. I have also hardly used any of its myriad of features.

But if you can afford it and really want the super looking DNS Pro, go for it. However, it will not navigate you any better than the DNS. The Pro has a couple of extra features which you might also find useful. These features would be unused by me and as I am a bit mean, I went for the cheaper option.

BTW, if you want a big screen and are unwilling to pay such a high price for the DNS Pro, how about this from Drivee Audio. Don't know how good it is.

When I took my car in for it's second service to VW in Hereford they had a Kenwood unit there - fitted price was very close to what Discover Media sets you back. I supposedly can do everything VW unit can and has full 3D map and same size screen as Discover Pro.

I am not too sure whether the Kenwood Sat Nav will be compatible with the Mk7 as the Kenwood has a built-in CD/DVD drive whereas the Mk7 has the CD/DVD drive in the glove compartment. I might be barking up the wrong tree as I am no ICE expert.

From what I've seen it had all the standard VW radio items included.
Most likely the exisiting parts in glove box would be removed.... I think one of the main reason why VW has split their sat navs and radios into 2 parts (CD drive and control part in glove box and display/touchscreen only in dash) was to prevent thefts.

Could you kindly find out which Kenwood it is please. The only one I can think of has a 7" screen.  Be most grateful.

I thought the Kenwood user interface was dreadful compared to the rns510 and the nav pro.
