Title: GTD ordered
Post by: hatco1800es on 28 November 2014, 04:13
Hi, another Aberdeenshire person here. Just ordered a 3dr manual GTD. Spec -

Limestone grey metallic
Discovery sat nav
Winter pack

I am a reformed track racer and I cannot get my head around the sound and sport pack benefits. Artificial engine and exhaust noise through the speakers? Willing to hear about the benefits though.

Anyway, it will join an up! On the driveway ;)

You get artificial engine noise through the speakers as standard. The main advantage of the Sport and Sound pack is that you get a nicer sounding exhaust note externally too that isn't artificial.

Isn't there a speaker in the exhaust though too with the sport and sound pack?

That's the one. Have a search on here I posted some videos showing the sound (just in the garage but gives you an idea). Also posted some pics of the brake callipers you get with S&S.

My opinion is that the exhaust sounds better than an non S&S even with the noise generator switched off due to the exhaust being straight through (no rear box behind the bumper).

However, no performance difference? It is the previous track driver from the 80s 911 supersport era in me that asks all these questions. When cars had no ABS or power steering and my word, you had to stay sharp on the road and the track. The rewards were immense though but the wallet was very very light!

No, no power difference but VW don't describe it properly so anything is possible  The odd thing is, our GTD is a lot pokier than the demonstrator (no S&S) we took on a test drive, maybe the lack of rear box/straight through section?

80's 911? Nice  The GTD won't come close but it is a cracking daily driver, I like it a lot.

That does make sense about the lack of a rear box and I'll no doubt play around with it in some way. The 89 911 Supersport M491 had an ECU under the passenger seat which was early hexidecimal coded, it was so tweakable. No more than 231 bhp was possible but torque and fuel usage was the aim. I drove a 71 Volvo 1800ES at the time and even its Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection had settings. Those were the days! I am thinking of joining the 2016 Caterham Academy, might just surprise a few young bucks on the track! ;)

I wonder what a replacement S&S exhaust system costs a few years down the line when its all corroded to hell...

I guess nobody has found out yet, but I suspect ££££...

Added the Sound and Sport pack to my order. Cheers folks ;)

I know its your choice but I don't get why you would buy a car that VW has spent millions of pounds in R&D to reduce noise, vibration and harshness only to add a load of that noise artificially. Also from what I can tell the noise added is obviously artificial and not representative of the engine...

I'm not against noise in a car - my other car has a switchable sports exhaust and when it is on... it is quite loud but it is the flat six that's making the noise...

But, hey, if you want it... I'm not going to tell you that you shouldn't

There's only one reason VW and others have spent millions on making the engine and exhaust quieter and that's the Euro emissions requirements. Nothing more.

It's this reason that "Symposers" are becoming so popular - people like to hear something from their car, well, petrol (or diesel lol) heads do anyway and it's getting to be the only way for a mass produced car to do it.

I'd rather have a real V8 sound track but VW don't do one

There's a few more videos these days for the sound on youtube, it's obviously even better in person.

This is not strictly true, exhaust noise is not related to emissions, adding balancer shafts to diesel engine to reduce vibration is not related to emissions. Car makers work hard to reduce NVH to make a better product, with greater perceived quality... and then charge some suckers a premium when the want to add some of the NVH they engineeredout back in...  :smug:

Do I want low wind noise? Yes. Do I want low road noise? Yes. Do I want low diesel clatter? Yes. Do I want minimised vibrations? Yes. Do I want to be able to have a sporty exhause note? Yes.

You can have your cake and eat it, it won't be for everyone but this is modern day engineering and it's fantastic! :D

You have assumed I bought the car. Also, it is a bit of fun for £255. I've spent more on nights out I don't even remember, although I am sure they were good! ;)

What happens at exhaust replacement time?

You get yer wallet out!

The sound generator is on a short branch, so I guess it would be cut off and sleeved into the replacement exhaust. I would bet getting aftermarket will be difficult though.....

I'd love to know of these sport and sound exhausts can be fitted to a standard GTD.

Didn't sootchucker put diagrams up of the exhaust systems?

He did, I'd imimagine they'd be easy to fit, but wonder if the coding would be easy and if you can actually order the exhaust.
