Title: Anyone had a frozen touch screen display?
Post by: AdmiralGant on 26 November 2014, 12:22
During the last 2 weeks my touch screen display has either frozen completely so whatever you touch it does nothing, or it has a delay or it has a mind of its own. Anyone else had this?

It has been into VW Colchester, they could not find anything wrong at all, despite me telling them it does not work when the car is cold, worse when outside temperature is close or below freezing, but then after 20  minutes it will work fine.

When the screen freezes, the passenger door mirror also fails to curb drop when in reverse!

I have now sent them video footage of the fault on Monday after further discussion, but they have not called me since.

Thanks

Mine has done this but only once.

It was a cold morning. I could change radio stations on the steering wheel, but the screen was completely frozen.
Was a pain as needed Sat Nav that day.
I drove about 7 miles, stopped for fuel, re-started engine and it sprung back to life.

I'm going to monitor it as the temperature drops, if it does it again it's going to VW.

Mine has done it several times and I lose most of the electronic features on the car when it does. It is simple to cure though, just press in the on/off button for 20 seconds and the system resets itself.

Happens to mine when it's really cold, had it in to be checked a couple of weeks ago, and they updated all the software, but it still happens, so not great for something that cost about £1800

Yep had it happen a couple of times when weather is cold, cleaning the screen seemed to help !

Yes had this problem and it went in twice before they agreed it was faulty. I filmed it in the end to prove it. Had a new touch screen installed and all is well. Mine was only ever faulty when it was cold

This is worrying.

From what I can see from the previous posts, most have the DNS Pro which occasionally suffer with frozen screens.

Anyone with the DNS or CMS having the same problem?

I just have the standard CMS system - No nav at all.  Not had the system freeze up on me yet (13 months of ownership now).

I had this problem with my CMS(Car registered 1/7/13) during last winter, filmed it everytime it failed until they eventually replaced the complete media system including screen and glovebox hardware.

Apparently some are resolved with software updates or a screen change.

Just imagine a freeze with no voice instructions when you really need to be directed to a new and complicated destination. Paper Road Maps to the rescue!

Went back in yesterday for the same old fault of freezing when it's Freezing !
So now having the front of the Nav Pro replaced............. whatever that actually involves, as I would have thought it was the hard drive sticking when cold, and not just the systems touch screen.
So in the 14 months of owning the car, and the 6 days of frost we have had, not once been able to use the climate windscreen.
Oh, and the advanced telephone prep is a total waste of time and money, never used it once, and the phone signal inside the car is superb, so much for the climate screen blocking the signal.

I have had that problem, went to Vw yesterday, they have updated the hardware & software on the Nav Pro, the newest version of the software is 2.00.

Hopefully it does the trick, my advice is get to your dealer!

I would have thought it was the hard drive sticking when cold,

Its a SSD, not a hard disk. There are no moving parts, its just a big pile of non volatile memory chips - like a SD card.

Ahhh, well that might explain it, I thought it had a hard drive, so hopefully this will fix it this time, I had it in two weeks ago, and they updated two lots of software.
I've been spoilt this time though, the VW Up I've got this time, now has electric windows and central locking, it was a shock to the system having to use a handle to wind the windows down.................. Oh, and I must remember to use the handbrake !!!

From what I've read on here, there were loads of faults before v2.00 of the navpro software and what I've also concluded is that upgrading to 2.00 fixes the problems...

I don't know when 2.00 started coming with the cars, but certainly it came with mine back in May 2014.

This is most interesting. I wonder why VW bundle the ATC and CW together. I feel if they did not, then lots would just order the CW without the ATC.

V2.00 is not a guaranteed solution, but since I got my car updated to this firmware version I have only had one freeze, which occurred about 6 months ago.

Mine did this several times but always worked at the dealers. After the inevitable "fob-off "software upgrade I took a video of it not working and got the unit changed. I then had the radio go into "mute" mode - and to be fair the fob-off seems to have fixed it

Mine has no Nav, just the standard system. It went into VW colchester and they could not find anything wrong. The next morning it was frozen again. They said unless I could show it doing it, they can not help. I then sent them 5 videos off my iphone and email system showing it frozen, but they said they could not upload them, despite me sending it to my work computer and playing the video.

The latest is they asked me what solution I can suggest ! It then worked ok as warmer temperatures but in the last week, it has played up to not working at all on a 12 mile journey, some functions working and then it completely doing its own thing.

I am going to try them again this week by taking my iphone in to show them, as opposed to the usual home collection service, but it will mean taking time off work.

Anyone else had this over the cold spell??

Mines doing something a little bit like this - and irritatingly it's an intermittent issue.

I plug in the iPhone to play music... I can navigate through my playlists/artists etc, but on selecting a song/album... it just doesn't play. Tried unplugging & plugging it back on again, tried plugging it in when I've tapped in the pin. Tried selecting the music on the iPhone and it plays, but can't control it from the dash screen.

It's my GTi's first birthday today, so as a treat, it's gone in for it's first service today (6840 miles!). I've asked them to look into this and hopefully they'll give it that firmware update.

Edit to above: VW Halifax just called. They are ordering a new media screen. Hopefully will fix issue.

I have had this since day one (Dec 2013) and have the pro screen. I have had the screen changed, the gubbins behind it changed, the car has been in 4 times to get this fixed. Yesterday I was told by my dealer that they had 12 cars (GTI and Polo) with the issue and the thought is that its some sort of dampness that gets in when the car is cold.

Mine also changes the radio station and the head up display on its own. I also get the ICE going into MUTE mode so that you don't get to hear anything.

I too felt I wasn't believed so each time its possible I pull over and take a video.

I've had mine in twice with same dealer, but different sites before Christmas.
Mine was freezing intermittently for a few weeks and started skipping tracks on the SD card when I turned the volume up
They performed the software update, and this was confirmed by the second dealer.
After the first trip, one morning, the system phoned one of my quick dials on the head unit. The phone was in the door pocket.
After the second trip, they said nothing could be found but recommended that I reset the Bluetooth between phone and system.
I also cleaned the "." Files off the SD card again, and touch wood it has behaved itself for over a month.
