Title: Golf MK8
Post by: Jammy1 on 21 November 2014, 15:27
A little article on the MK8, I might even contemplate going to the dark side with a 10 speed DSG on offer

You might need to place your order now to get one close to launch.

10 speed DSG? Oh please

I drove a BMW diesel earlier this year with about seven or eight gears and all it did was change gear constantly stuttering and jerking like a hyperactive toddler with a live electrical cable in his gob.

Surprised by that as my 8 speed 330 gear box is excellent, one of the things that put me off a recent test drove in an R was the way that the car constantly wanted to drop from 6th the 3rd when cruising on a dual carriage way to over take a car.

I really like the look of these pictures, the rear window looks like it has a coupe slope to it and I really like the angular exhausts that are being adopted from their Audi cousins.

I love the look of the car etc I just don't like some DSG boxes.
10 speed is a bit excessive! In my humble and grumpy opinion.

Maybe if I had one on a 50p lease deal I'd change my mind...

Anyway, Autoexpress. Need we say more...

Not really impressed with the looks in those pictures. It looks like a facelifted MK7. And that exhaust looks like a copy of the actual Astra VXR (OPC)/Skoda Octavia RS exhaust.

Front looks like a Focus ST.

I like the sound of the new Tech in development. As a DSG fan who's driven 6 and 7 speed boxes the 10 speed sounds good. Lower CO2 and better fuel economy... what's not to like. And it can handle plenty of torque too (unlike the dry sump 7 speed unit).

I wouldn't pay any attention to the photoshop styling images. They're just guessing from current trends and kinda amuses me. The front looks like a hybrid of the Scirocco and eGolf front diffuser. While its flanks look like the current Audi A3. Tailgate, well that's pure speculation on which way VW will tweak the rear lights. Quite like the exhausts though. I can see that making it through to final designs as lots of manufacturers are going down this route - Big new Volvo's and the new Mercedes C Class to name but a few.

It wouldn't take much for VW to up economy by 10-15% - all they have to do is add active cylinder technology to the GTI and R engines (would it really be that hard to do?), but that would probably take the GTI too close to the GTD for comfort - a bit of market protection going on there? With as many gears as a mountain bike  the DSG might be pretty indecisive between all or nothing throttle responses as to which gear it wants to be in.
